Customer Review: A fascinating toddler toy

Although it says 3 to 7 years old, we bought Gearation for our son at about 2 1/2 because it is featured in the Baby Mozart video and he was always so fascinated with it. We felt okay about this because we didn't see any parts so small that they were a choking hazard.I actually think this is more fun and educational for younger toddlers. I can see how older kids would get bored quickly with it, but it teaches younger children basic mechanical skills and gives them an understanding of how things fit together. He would love to create various patterns of gears and watch them spin.
Our son is almost 3 now and he still enjoys playing with it after about six months, a fairly long duration by comparison with other toys. I recommend it highly.

We ALL love it! I found this at a thrift store, thought I'd take a chance. My grandkids and their cousins, aged 18 months to 6 years, quickly learned to make it work and to share it instead of fighting over it. Even the adults, parents and grandparents, find this toy entertaining. Kids don't have an idea that they are learning -- but this sturdy, colorful magnet/gears toy is fun on so many different levels. Another plus: the portable magnetic board is good with magnetic alphabets and other magnetic toys. I went back to the thrift store to purchase the other two on the shelf -- alas, they were already gone. Buy this toy, and the only regret you may have is not being able to get your kid to do anything else!Customer Review: The Favorite Toy!

We received this as a gift when my son was 3, he LOVED it. He took it to preschool for show and tell and all the kids wanted one.
The gears are really easy to move and manipulate. My son loved the fact that you can change directions or make it go faster/slower. He would rearrange the gears and then sit and just watch them.
It is great for spatial skills, you have to be able to line up the gears with the opposing gears to make them connect and spin. It allows you the opportunity to discuss magnetics as well.
Great toy! It fell out of favor around age 5 though (thankfully his 2yo old sister now enjoys it). So I would say it is best for ages almost 3-5.

We bought this for my son for his 2nd birthday. He absolutley loved it! He played with it off and on several times a day. He stacked blocks on the gears and watched them turn. He built on it just like it was a table and would watch everything spin and switch the buttons to change the speed and directions. All his toys took rides on the gears.He was facinated by it for months-way up past his next birthday-then he suddenly lost all interest in it. I put it in a charity box last summer, BUT, if I had known you could buy accessory kits, I would have kept it and just put it away for awhile and then pulled it back out with the accessory kits. I might buy another one for his next birthday!Customer Review: I've bought Two -- both stopped working!

I have bought two of these toys for my son, an only child and pretty gentle on toys. It has been kept in his bedroom away from his playgroup. He has not even played with it regularly. Yet BOTH times these toys BROKE WITHIN MONTHS OF PURCHASE!!!
Yes, it is fascinating. And like other reviewers, I've also had some fun with it myself. But I am disgusted that it broke down so easily--twice. There must be a reason that Amazon doesn't offer new ones for sale; please think hard about buying a new one elsewhere. Unless you don't mind looking at the $30 you'll pay as a month or two of entertainment, look to other gear toys that don't depend upon this lousy motor.
