My daughters (ages 9 and 10) got this for Christmas, and we waited until August to do it. It is a wonderful experience. We only lost one larva - and in the end got 9 beautiful butterflies. We actually saw 6 of the 9 emerge and it was thrilling. My daughters came running through the house shouting to come watch each time one butterfly emerged. What a great experience for the kids to actually see how a small larva eats and eats and eats and then forms a chrysallide and then in about 10 days, out pops a butterfly. I highly recommend this for children (and adults) of all ages.Customer Review: Good for all ages

I have 3 children aged 3,4 and 5. They all really enjoyed this toy. The caterpillars arrive in the mail in two lidded plastic cups - 5 in each - which contain all the food they will need for this part of their lifecycle. When they pupate they attach themselves to a filter paper on the base of each cup lid which is then simply transferred into the pavillion when ready. We have had a 100% success rate with our 'babies' (we are awaiting #10's 'birth' at the moment) and the whole experiment has been a very easy, a great success and appreciated by all. I am using this product for the second year. My students love it. They are able to watch the butterflies grow from caterpillars. It is durable. It is washable with a hose. I raised 10 out of 10 butterflies successfully last year. This year we were able to see 4 out of 5 turn to butterflies. The only piece of advice I have for the set is to send for the butterflies right when you want them and not early. I sent the postcard in and told them I wanted the caterpillars in March. We love this toy!!! All Caterpillars hatched into beautiful butterflies. We had fun giving them fresh flowers and special food that is also available. We had a cup of wheat grass growing from a school project and gave it to the butterflies and they played in the grass every day. We have already ordered more caterpillars to start our butterfly habitat again. It is very educational and fun for the whole family. This pavilion is light weight, easy to view and easy to clean. Our whole family was engrossed in the daily development of our caterpillars as they grew (quickly! wow!) and became fluttering Painted Lady butterflies. The Pavilion hung up easily from my daughter's bedroom light (we have no flat surfaces that aren't covered with stuff in our house, but don't judge me a bad housekeeper for that). It was so easy, and better yet, the habitat is reusable. We can't wait to do the whole thing again! Simple, interesting, educational, live - in short, it's amazing. Where was this when I was a kid?
