Customer Review: Love doing this with the kids

We love doing this as a family -- getting the caterpillars, watching them grow, watching them spin silk, noticing all the changes.
An excellent companion book is "From Caterpillar to Butterfly" -- a Let's-Read-And-Find-Out science book. The learning level on the book is kindergarten and up, and the illustrations and information are EXCELLENT.
When ordering the larvae from Insect Lore, please note it takes a LONG time to receive your caterpillars. The timing seems way off. So far it hasn't mattered for us, but the wait time can be 3 or 4 weeks. It is regrettable there's no way to coordinate it so that the live butterflies can be released as part of a child's birthday celebration (for example).
BE CAREFUL ordering the larvae in the summer -- caterpillars need to ship in cooler weather.

Sadly, we had high hopes for this one. It was my 5 year old daughters most coveted gift for Christmas. If she could only get one present then this was the one she wanted. So I spent $30 on a mesh hamper that has been sitting in her closet for almost a month - untouched. The coupon for the butterflies was redeemed online over three weeks ago and not a word from Insect Lore on the larvae. The "customer service" is TERRIBLE so say the least. There is no customer service. You have to submit a message online and hope they will actually read it and write back. There is no phone service you can call. None of my messages have been answered. So, here we wait, silently, in hopes that evenually we will receive some larvea to put in this net. My daughter has given up all hope.

My [kid] got this and shared it with her (...) class. They followed the instructions to the letter. Finally out came a whole bunch of the ugliest moth-looking like creatures. All of the children were so disappointed. Here they had seen the cover of the box with these orange painted lady butterflies! I called the company and they so nicely explained that these are not the colorful American Painted Lady butterflies. They are a different species that are much more gray and moth looking. We even had a bug expert come in to my daughter's class and tell us the "butterflies" sure looked like moths to her too! My question is, "Why does the company show colorful orange butterflies on the package when that is not what they are sending?" Very disappointing and not worth the money.Customer Review: Wonderful for the whole family!!!

This was wonderful. I purchased this for my 4 year old daughters for Easter. We sent off the certificate for the catepillars and anxiously watched the mail. We started taking pictures of the catepillars from day 1 and watched them grow and change. It was as amazing and fun to me and my husband as it was to the girls. We all loved it. All 10 of our catepillars are now butterflies!! My daughter got to see the last one come out. One of my daughters was naming them tonight. I think we will free them tomorrow or the next day.
I am recommending this to everyone I know!!! The only problem we had was keeping the paper cone attached to the net. Duct Tape and scotch tape both didn't hold it. Once we used masking tape it worked.

We purchased this for our daughter's 4th birthday, and I'm glad I ordered the pavilion and sent in the certificate so the cultures were in the house for her to see, because she loved opening it!
The only issue she had was that she wanted the caterpillars to turn into butterflies RIGHT NOW, not in a few days which is typical for a 4-year old I'm being told.
The customer service at Insectlore is very accomodating - our cultures were sent when the heat was soaring all over the country, so they sent me a certificate to redeem for more caterpillars once the temperatures drop to a reasonable level.
I think we'll be ordering more items from this company in the future - I would highly recommend it.
