Customer Review: A surprise when combined with the Butterfly Feeder

My 5-year old got this for his May birthday. He had gone through the whole thing in preschool and love it very much. He and my 10-year old both enjoyed naming the caterpillars and watching them every day. They grew by the hour during the first few days. We actually got to see them hatch. Another fun thing was watching them learn to fly. They climbed up to the top of the pavillon and then dropped to the bottom. Eventually they all learned. We released them near hibiscus and butterfly bushes. Got nice pics, one of them appearing on the supplier's web site. We had placed the Butterfly feeder at the bottom instead of flowers. After we released them, we saw tiny, green spots on the feeder. Yep, butterfly eggs! After about a week, they hatched. Unfortunately, due to my ignorance, they teeny, tiny caterpillars died. I found out you can buy just the food from the manufacturer. We'll probably buy more caterpillars next year (and an extra supply of food for the hatchlings).Customer Review: Fun and educational, but long wait for caterpillars.

The Butterfly Pavilion is a really fun and educational item, but you do not receive the caterpillars with the pavilion. When you get the pavilion you have to send in $5 extra to get the caterpillars. After sending in the money we waited 3 weeks and then they finally came. I was disappointed because you would think the price for the caterpillars would be included in the 24.99 with the pavilion. My daughter asked me everyday where the caterpillars were when we checked the mail. I tried calling costumer service many times only I never got to talk to a person after waiting in hold for over 20 minutes several different times. I even left a message after picking an extension and never received a call back. If I would have know this now I would have ordered the more expensive one from the TV. At least that one comes with the caterpillars at the same time. The one we got also does not come with the DVD and poster that the other one comes with.Customer Review: Neat Project but research butterflies first!

This was a neat project. We got all five catapillars and they did very well and got really big. The tricky part is transferring them to the butterfly house after they have formed cocoons. If any of them fall YOU MUST IMMEDIATELY hang them back up. Use a string or piece of tape. If you don't, they won't come out right. They cannot lay on the floor of the cage. The instructions said this was okay if one of them fell. This is not true. I read online to hang the one that fell back up, but it was too late. He came out deformed and only had one wing which was crumpled. They also need enough room to dry out their wings before they harden. They have to do this fast after they emerge. The poor deformed one could not get to the food source very well and he died sadly while the other 4 are still alive. It kind of made the experience not so great for me watching that one who seemed to be suffering and probably starved to death.Customer Review: Wow, what a great experience!!!!!!

I ordered this product with great reservations as to if it would just be a waste of money and a big disappointment to my 6 year old son. Well, no need for those reservations! The butterflies come as small worms in a tightly sealed cup with food for them. They came the exact week that I specified that I wanted them shipped. You can actually watch them grow into big fat caterpillars. Then they go to the top of the cup and make cocoons just like the directions say. The top of the cup removes easily and is easily pinned to the side of the very sturdy pavillion. My son(as well as my husband and I) have ust loved this! It has been so neat to see all of the life cycles of the butterfly. All of my worms turned into butterflies!!!! We are getting ready to set them free but it sure has been neat. I am planning on ordering more larva and start over again!Customer Review: butterflies!

This is really fun and I think I would like to do it again. You order the habitat and it comes in the mail with a certificate which you mail along with $5.00, to order the caterpillars. Then they come in the mail. The caterpillars are in little plastic cups with food. Five days after they came in the mail, the first one started to spin a cocoon. Once they were all in cocoons, I moved them to the habitat. After 10 - 14 days they had all come out of the cocoons and were butterflies. They guarantee that 60% (or 6 out of 10) will come out as healthy butterflies. 9 of our 10 were perfect and I let them go after three days. One of our butterflies was malformed, its wing is shriveled and so it cannot fly. We are going to keep her inside as a pet. My son named her Vanessa. This was really fun and easy and I would like to order more caterpillars and do it again.
