Toys and Games Reviews of Insect Lore Live Butterfly GardenCustomer Review: Beautiful educational experience!! Summary: 5 Stars
Others have reviewed this product well (see the reviews for the 10-caterpillar garden), and I will simply concur with their well-written opinions. We knew (both by product description, as well as logic) that the caterpillars could not be included in the box. We chose the smaller-sized Butterfly Garden, as it was perfect for setting on the island in our kitchen, so we could observe the butterflies.
We sent off for our caterpillars, and they came within about 10 days. All 5 caterpillars grew visibly, daily! After a couple of weeks, they turned into chrysalides & hatched a couple of weeks after that. It's the Christmas gift that has brought delight, and joy, and education for two months! We plan to order more caterpillars in March and repeat this wonderful process!
Kudos, to Insect Lore for this wonderful product!
Customer Review: Awesome for your whole family Summary: 5 Stars
This kit is just an awesome thing for your entire family. Everyone at our house has enjoyed watching the ten caterpillars grow and form their chrysallis. And now we have 8 painted ladies flitting about the habitat. A friend told me they will go wild over watermelon, can't wait to try it. I plan to purchase a kit for two friends (one age 7 and the other age 5) who have birthdays this summer. The only thing I would say is that it was a bit hard for my kids to wait for the larva to arrive in the mail. That was the only part that was disappointing for them. But of course, it was also a good lesson in patience. Goodness knows that never hurts. Ha!ha! This really is a great "toy" for either a girl or a boy and would be appropriate for a whole range of ages. I could even imagine adults/senior citizens enjoying watching this process!
Customer Review: A great learning experience. Summary: 5 Stars
We bought this for my 7 year old daughter after seeing a similar product in a major retailer; and I can't recomend it enough for anyone who's kids (or parents, aunts, uncles, etc) are curious about where those colorful butterflies come from every summer.
The kit says that at least 3 of the 5 larvae will survive to become butterflies, we had all 5 survive.
My daughter loved every stage; from watching the larvae grow (very quickly) into caterpillars and become crysalids (not cocoons daddy! Moths come from cocoons!" my daughter corrected me more than once)and then creating her own environment for her butterflies.
When it came time to release them they actually stayed in our yard for a few days (nothing cuter than watching a little girl talk to her butterfly friends about life outside.)
Again; can't recomend this enough.
Customer Review: The Birds and the Bees . . . and Butterflies! Summary: 5 Stars
I am not ready to completely explain the birds and bees to my 4/7 year old boys . . . but we can get a good start with The Butterfly Treehouse! Extremely easy to use - once the treehouse arrives, you order the caterpillars, which arrive in a small container containing food. The children were thrilled to watch them develop and rise to the top and begin their transformation! After all the chrysalids are formed, you open the container and transfer the paper to the side of the treehouse. The treehouse has a velcro strap that keeps it stored. Once you are ready to place the chrysalids into the treehouse, simply pop it open. . . the velcro strap it now a handle and the treehouse can be moved to a location for the children to see the butterflies hatch! The directions are easy to follow and all our caterpillars formed chrysalids!
Customer Review: This is not a humane prodcut. Summary: 1 Stars
Plant a butterfly garden instead.
Inhumane treatment of animals! "Insect Lore guarantees that at least three of the five caterpillars you receive will grow into adult butterflies." That is a pretty high rate of butterflies not emerging. WOW! And you incurage butterflies to be raised in winter to live lives in tine cages?
"What is wrong with releasing butterflies at weddings and other events?
This well-meaning but misguided practice spreads diseases to natural populations, inappropriately mixes genetically distinct populations of the same species, may disrupt migratory behavior of native butterflies, confuses scientific studies of butterfly migrations, and usually results in the untimely death of the butterflies released. Please see Butterflies at Weddings for more about this subject."
