Toys and Games Reviews of Insect Lore Live Butterfly Garden

Customer Review: Live butterfly garden
Summary: 1 Stars

I got this for my son's 5th birthday. He is very excited about getting the larvae to start his garden. However, I don't know how to break it to him that the larvae aren't coming because the company doesn't ship them to Hawaii. I found this out a bit late. First I tried to register online but the site won't let you. So I tried to call and fax but the lines are eternally busy. Then I sent the application. A week later I got it back with a rude note that they said..."Hawaii???" "We don't ship to Hawaii". Amazon says they don't ship to APO or FPO addresses but no mention is made about Hawaii. I thought the company could have at least offered a coupon or credit in the value of the larvae or even a suggestion as to a way that I could get larvae here. The container itself is well made and Amazon shipped quickly as always. I love Amazon. The educational value? Let downs are a part of life???

Customer Review: Loved By Kids, Parents, and Cats
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this as a summer learning experience for my sons, ages 3.5 and 4.5. It was such a fun thing for us to do together! They were amazed by just how much the caterpillars grew during the first week. Transferring them to the "tent" after they were in their chrysallis form without disturbing them too much was tricky, but my husband and I managed. It definitely takes two adults. My sons (and our two cats) were thrilled to see them emerge as beautiful butterflies. In fact, my older son cried tonight when we released the five butterflies. He had become connected to them as he checked them each day to see their progress. We're already planning on ordering more larvae so we can watch the entire process again. Just note that there is an additional $[...] S/H fee to get the larvae sent to you. I wasn't aware of that when I purchased the kit online, however, the extra money was well worth it!

Customer Review: Nothing short of "miraculous"
Summary: 5 Stars

Four caterpillars were "raised" in one good-sized BUTTERFLY GARDEN this September/October in coastal California. I can oly imagine how many you could place in the larger one! We got to watch them pupate and emerge as Monarchs over the course of about 4 weeks. I only had to supply the milkweed from our garden and I purchased a water vial for $.25 from the flower section of the grocery store to keep the branch fresh. It is a wonder and a miracle happening before your eyes. We also watched two cocoons located outside but having them inside and getting to see the progress at any moment is amazing. Meanwhile we are growing more milkweed and stored our BUTTERFLY GARDEN (which conveniently collapses) until our next opportunity to propagate more Monarchs. I highly recommend this "toy" and this experience to anyone...singles, couples or families. Prepare to be totally dazzled.

Customer Review: fun and educational
Summary: 5 Stars

I gave this product 4 stars for durability because of the construction of the actual butterfly pavillion. It's made out of collapsable plastic, and is very lightweight. Fine for people without toddlers or cats. I haven't decided where I can put it that my cats won't be able to knock it over and that my little boy can still see it without knocking it over, as well. Of course, if it had a heavier base shipping would be more expensive. Catch 22. All 5 of our caterpillars arrived alive and 2 have already made cocoons. The other 3 are working their way to the top and I expect that they will make cocoons soon. The only gross thing about this so far is that the little caterpillar jar is full of caterpillar poop. On the bright side, that is one more educational aspect to this toy - even caterpillars poop! My 2 1/2 yr old loves checking on the caterpillars each day.

Customer Review: So fun I Bought My Own!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought one of these last year for my nieces. I also got one for me, and I'm in my 30's. I waited until the spring time to send in my caterpillar certificate. They came in their own little container with just enough food. So you don't need to feed them anything. I tried to put some real food such as leaves from the plants they like to eat in the wild, but they preferred the food that came with them. I think I received 6 caterpillars and they all turned into butterflies. I let them go a day or two after they emerged. Kids are completely fascinated by the process from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. One word of caution, it may not be the best thing to get for Christmas since you may have to wait until spring to get your caterpillars. They will send them in the winter, but I didn't want the butterflies to die on me or freeze to death if I let them go.
