Customer Review: A great rendition of a classic hero. Roll out!
Summary: 5 Stars
I've been collecting retro-styled (Classics/Universe/Generations/Reveal The Shield...and there's more coming!) Transformers lately, but held off on this version of Optimus in favor of IGear's unofficial PP01 Mini Masterpiece Optimus Prime (aka "Faith Leader"). That figure was styled based on his G1 appearance and made for a nice display piece, but it suffered from poor construction and sort of lacked personality.
I ended up going back to get the Classics version - the Henkei (Japanese) release to be exact, which has better paint apps and a chrome grill/bumper (the US/Hasbro release just has gray plastic). It turns out the problems I had with the design (overly long legs, squat torso, arm kibble, strange weapons) don't bother me that much and actually add to his charm. Articulation is excellent (no ball joints, but the ratchets and swivels work well) and allows for creative poses, he's an inch or two taller than the rest of the Autobots and has a real heft when you pick him up, and his alternate/vehicle mode is modernized while taking cues from his classic design. You can set up the wind vane and smoke stacks a few different ways in robot mode - I'm a purist and prefer the basic backpack plus gun, but shoulder cannons or gun plus giant ion cannon are also possibilities.
If you've got the money, look for the unofficial Fansproject G3 Trailer as well - it's a perfect compliment to the figure and has places to store his weapons, display him shooting the combat deck, etc.
