Toys and Games Reviews of The Game of SCATTERGORIES

Customer Review: Scattergories rocks!
Summary: 5 Stars

This has to be one of my favorite all time games by Milton Bradley. It's quick, you can play as many rounds as you like, and there are several variations to the games rules so it's hard to get bored. I started playing this game when I was 12 years old, and still enjoy it 12 years later!

Each player is given a list of 12 things ie. A Boys Name, Vehicles, Types of Sandwiches, Capital Cities etc.. The dice is rolled to select the letter for each game. Once the timer is started, all players have up to 3 minutes to complete results for each listed item with answers beginning with the letter rolled. For example, if a D were rolled the answers to the above examples could be: David, Dodge, Dill pickle & Dhaka (Bangladesh).

Once the time is up, you must compare your answers to other players results and cross off any which match. For example, if someone else answered David in the Boys Name category you would not get a point for that item. At the end of the round, you should have a score between 1-12, depending on how many correct, original answers you obtained.

The game can be played with as many or as few players as you choose - with a minimum of 2. The more players in the game, the harder it is to find unique words which are not duplicated by others.

As mentioned, there are several variations to the game such as reducing the length of time to play the game to 2.5 minutes, and 2 minutes. Another variation to try out allows players to enter duplicate words if they start with the same rolled letter, for multiple points ie. In the category Famous People with the dice rolled on B, you could answer Betty Boop, or Billy-Bob Thornton for 2 points instead of the traditional 1 point per category. This adds to the challenge and allows for a greater range of points to be scored.

Overall, Scattegories is a must have to add to your game collection. It's really easy to learn, and loads of fun to play. Definitely recommended! Enjoy...

Customer Review: Stay Cool and Think Fast
Summary: 5 Stars

Scattegories is a unique and entertaining game that challenges you to think quickly and make smart decisions. In each round, players are given a letter and 12 different categories. You have a have a certain amount of time to write down a response for each category, and it must begin with that particular letter. The categories include things like the name of a country or the name of an actress or an item in the kitchen. You get 1 point for each appropriate response that you wrote down, but if someone else wrote the same response then neither player receives a point for that category. If a player disagrees with one of your responses, then you have to explain your reasoning for writing that down. The players will then vote on whether or not to accept that response (this can lead to some entertaining debates between opponents). The player with the most points after a certain number of rounds is the winner.

Scattegories has been one of my favorite games for many years. It can be interesting to hear what responses your opponents wrote down for the various categories. Some can be real funny, some can be kind of strange, and some can be so simple you'll be upset at yourself for not thinking of it. The pressure can really get to you though as you listen to that loud and persistent timer tick away knowing that you only have a couple minutes to come up with a response different than your opponents for 12 different categories and each one has to begin with the same letter. You don't just need brains to win; you also need to handle the pressure effectively. This is one of those games that everyone can enjoy, even if they don't play that well.

Customer Review: A great after dinner game.
Summary: 5 Stars

Players of Scattergories may become victims of thinking too hard. My little sister is very competitive in this game because she thinks of many obvious answers that the rest of us forget. The idea is, after a die with letters is rolled and a letter is selected, players must think of nouns that begin with that letter and correspond to a list already chosen. For example, if the letter C was rolled and list 8 was used, the players would have to think of such things "Celebrities" "Reptiles/Amphibians" "Bad Habits" or "Cars" that all begin with the letter C. There are actually 12 categories, those are just a sampling. The catch is, if someone else has your word, no points are awarded to either player. This forces you to stay on your toes. The timer does as well. 1 point is awarded for each word that is not taken by another player. 2 points are awarded if the letter is used twice...example: for an F celebrity, Farrah Fawcett. You use the same list, but go through three different letters. At the end of the round, players add up their points and the one with the most wins!! I gave this game five stars for fun because it really is very fun. It's a good family game. It has some educational aspects as well, learning new words would be one. It is durable because the possibilities for words are nearly limitless. You are only limited by your imagination!! Have fun!

Customer Review: Great in Teams!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm always intrigued when I read of folks playing this game as individuals . . . I've only played it with teams (usually of 3 players each).

I host a potluck dinner and "game night" at my home every couple of months . . . sometimes a mixed group of singles and couples, sometimes friends bring their children, sometimes just a group of women friends . . . after dinner and chat we move on to the game for the evening . . . we have tried several different games, but have settled on Scattergories as one of our favorites --- it is easy to play in teams and the answers are creative and fun (with few blank spots when the timer stops!)

Each team designates one person to write while all the team comes up with answers . . . some teams have one person start at the bottom of the list while another starts at the top and they meet in the middle . . . we have found that with team play some like to move away from the table for the fill in portion of the game (into the family room, out onto the deck, etc.).

What's great about this game is that it's fun to play with all ages . . . the kids get to see adults having fun (and not taking themselves too seriously) everyone gets to play and no one is ever made to feel foolish or stupid. Even friends who think that they don't like to play games because they aren't competitive enough have enjoyed this game when played in a team.
