Toys and Games Reviews of RiskCustomer Review: Very Addictive, Very Fun! Summary: 5 Stars
I am 30 years old and I have been playing Risk for 9 years now. It is a blast playing with a group of your friends, but be prepared to bring a sleeping bag because this game can keep you up until the crack of dawn! It is very addicitive, involves strategy, but that is the best part. Object is to conquor the world with your armies by taking out your opponent's armies. Each player starts out with a few territories scattered throughout the map and the trick is to fortify and defend those territories you need to progress to eventually cover the whole map with your colour. It is tricky that you won't be able to fortify every area you own since you only get so many armies based on how many places you occupy at the start of your turn. Luck also plays a major role - for every attack and every defend you must roll the dice, highest roller is able to keep his army, lowest roller has to take an army off. The more taken off, the weaker his/her regiment becomes. Once she/he loses all his armies on a given space, the attacker then moves in to occupy that space. Once you get comfortable with the game and really good with it, you can make it go a little quicker. There is also a quicky version you can play, which is explained in the manual. Pieces are easy to lose, we usually wrapped our army boxes with elastics or plastic ziploc bags to help avoid this problem. The down part to this game is if a player loses all his armies and territories very early in the game, then he or she pretty much has to sit there for hours watching their friends play and waiting for the game to end. Risk can bring out the worst in people unfortunately, so you may want to rethink about wiping out your best friend, early in the game, even if you can do it.
Customer Review: Move Over Dr Evil! Summary: 5 Stars
I had looked at this game for years, blissfully ignorant of the addictive dreams that lurked within. Of course, I have always harboured secret desires leaning towards absolute power and control of the globe, so it was no surprise that "Risk" turned out to be perfect.
Basically, the game is played out between up to 6 players with various territories that are under their control. As players dominate entire continents, they gain bonus units for their forces. As they take over territories, they can collect cards for even more units. In this way, you can try to build up for using pure, brute force to achieve dominance.
However, one might like to get into some intrigue and conspiring. This, in my opinion, is where some of the best features of gameplay come out. Just the delicious opportunities to ally yourself with other players to crush a mutual enemy, and then turn on each other when the deed is done. The fluidity of gameplay is greatly enhanced, and the tension mounts with not really knowing who to trust. It is a very important part of the game's appeal and enjoyment, in my opinion.
There are lots of little pieces to the game, so that may be an issue for those with younger children in the house. It is a bit easy to lose pieces. Other than this issue, the pieces and board are quite durable and you should get years of enjoyment out of the game.
For the taste of strategy, crushing opponents like bugs, double-dealing and treachery, all spiced up with pure war, "Risk" is a very addictive and extremely cool game. It will entertain your for hours, and is a great way to spend an evening with friends.
Although, how long they remain friends is open to debate!
Customer Review: The most essential war game Summary: 5 Stars
Risk is one of my all-time favorite games. I've been playing it for almost 15 years and can remember a lot of memorable Risk matches with my brothers and sisters. This game is a classic from one of the best gaming companies ever formed in Parker Brothers.
Risk is simple enough. Your goal is rule to the world. The game starts off randomly with your pieces being set all over the place. It's then up to you to make your stratedy from there and work on your goal towards global conquest. You should try to take continents so you can start off each turn with more base pieces than the rest of your opponents.
Your goal should be to get enough cards from taking contries to form a set. Sets give you a set amount of pieces that you start that one turn off with. The more sets that are turned in the higher the value they go. This is one of the easiest ways to win the game just because of the massive army you can put together.
We've added house rules in over the years. We've made peace treaties with each other and done tons of different things to mix the game up. Nothing though compares to a good old fashion game of Risk though.
The game does have some educational value for any parents out there who might be wondering on getting this for their child. Like so many other people I learned a lot of my early countries from watching people play or playing Risk myself. Your child also learns some basic stratedy which is essential to winning this game.
This one is a must own. It's been a classic for a long time. No home in the world should be without this game. It's fun and educatinal. So pick up a copy and sit down and play it. You won't regret it.
Customer Review: rule the world without even hurting a soul! Summary: 4 Stars
...and that's exactly what RISK does! I was introduced to this beautiful game when I was only 12, and I've been hooked ever since, though finding an eager player in my small, busy family is hard. You may think this game is a tad expensive, but that's because of the beautifully crafted game pieces you'll find- hundreds of little soldiers standing at the ready, along with cavalrymen wielding swords and artillery. Modeled after the world around the 19th century and using Revolutionary-era units, the world is yours! RISK is a relatively simple game compared to other more complicated war games; you simply place your men, attack, defend, and you can fortify strongholds. Along the way you gain territory cards, which can be cashed in for bonus reinforcements. This is a great game and will be a keystone in your board game collection for years to come. Never again will a rainy day be boring. The lowdown:
PROS
-finely crafted game pieces in six different colors
-game has a plastic tray with compartments for everything
-thick cardboard game mat; very durable
-different ways to play the game (in this game there is also a variant called Secret Mission RISK)
CONS
-a game may takes hours to finish
-the game pieces are very tiny, so they may be easily knocked over or get lost
-the game takes a long time to set up (15-20 minutes!)
-misshaped continents (ukraine [a european territory] is half the size of asia)
-younger players may not understand so well
-the game relies heavily on dice rolls for the outcome of your battles
Customer Review: Wonderful game! Summary: 5 Stars
I've just started playing Risk again after not playing for a couple of years. I'm so stoked to be back in the flow- this is a great game and a real brain-stretcher with level after level of strategy.
You can really learn a lot about your friends or family when you take them on to achieve dominion over the world.
Another thing I like about Risk is it's readily amenable to making your own variations- we like to discount all ties (instead of rewarding them as an army knocked off by the defender). That alone would make defending virtually impossible, so we also let the defender roll 3 white dice if he has 3 armies in the country being attacked. We've named it "Steroid Risk" because it feels more muscular and aggressive. The attacker is able to wreak massive slaughter- but he must watch overextending perhaps even more than under the traditional rules.
Rewarding agressive play also shortens the game somewhat- we can generally conclude a game in 4 or 5 hours (even with three grizzled Risk addicts), while the game used to take 8 to ten hours under the old rules.
I don't like any version but the 80's version with the plastic singles, 3's, 5's and 10's- none of this mission crap (Ewww- that's so Eurotrash)..
I could go into the depths my strategy has evolved into, but that would be telling!
I hope Risk is undergoing as renaissance in popularity- I can't think of a better game for an all-nighter. Break out the cigars, beverages and get down to it.
Risk is one of the all-time classics.
