Toys and Games Reviews of Playskool Step Start Walk 'n Ride - Colors May Vary

Customer Review: My son still loves it at 18 months!
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this walker because it was inexpensive and convertible. I wasn't expecting to get so much use out of it since my son seems to grow out of toys faster than shoes! I bought this at 10 months when he was starting to cruise and push chairs around the kitchen. It was a little too fast/uncontrollable on non-carpeted surfaces when he was an early cruiser, but he seemed to figure out his balance fairly quickly and was speeding all over the house with this walker about a month later. He is 18 months now and still loves to push this around. He enjoyed playing with the little gagets on it and hiding blocks in the little front compartment. In the ride position, he still hasn't figured out how to ride in forward direction, but he can speed like a champ backwards. It will be too small for him to ride comfortably probably in a few more months (and he is smallish in height). We take it outside, in the grass, on the driveway, you name it. It is durable and fun.

Customer Review: Would Recommend!
Summary: 4 Stars

Received this for our son's first Christmas from a friend (at 6 months!). A little too big, and maybe fun to sit on at that age. At 9 months he began to show interest in the toys/trunk. At 11 months I put in the walker mode (NOTE-- you don't have to be a rocket scientist to lock it in correctly-- but you do need to pay attention to it). My son immediately tried to walk off with it... The wheels need a little more rolling resistance to help from getting away from the child- No matter, my son had the death grip on it, and quickly learned to balance/pull himself along. Items on the rear that people fear they'll take an eye out-- remove them if you don't feel save about it (OR WATCH YOUR KIDS!). Not a toy to drop off and let use unsupervised. My son now at 11.5 months is about to start walking-- can walk behind this toy with 1 hand. I feel it played a major part in getting him ready to walk on his own. I would recommend with cautions listed above!

Customer Review: NEW WALKERS BEWARE
Summary: 4 Stars

We bought this toy when our little girl was about 9 and a half months and showing interest in walking. We thought this would help her along in her walking skills. We were wrong in that regard. For a beginning walker this toy should be avoided. Not stable enough for a baby still struggling with balance, and it runs way too fast across the floor for a new walker to keep up. Luckily, our daughter showed very little interest in this toy at that point (except for the little toys on the body of the scooter. She liked playing with those). But when she was a month or so older and much more proficient with walking, this toy came in handy. She didn't have to rely on the scooter to give her the balance anymore and she could keep up with the pace when she pushed it. So luckily we did get some use out of this product, but if I had to do it over again, I would probably try to find a toy better suited for helping beginning walkers. Good luck to all.

Customer Review: Great toy, but could use a little modification...
Summary: 4 Stars

I, like some other reviewers, have a few issues with this toy.

1) I do not like the "weird" way this converts from a walker to a ride-on toy. If you don't make sure that it "clicks" into place, it can collapse when in the walker mode.

2) I also wish this toy had a wider base when in the walker mode as my daughter tends to kick the plasic part over the wheels while walking behind it.

3) When in the ride-on mode, the yellow handle almost presses up against my daughters chest making it difficult to hold on to.

That being said, my daughter loves this toy and she still pushes it around the house even though she has been walking for the past 4 months. We also have the "Laugh and Learn: Stride-to-Ride Learning Car" which is MUCH more stable as a walker due to its wide rear wheel base and much easier to ride on. I would recommend that one if you were only going to buy one.

Customer Review: Not Sturdy for Beginners
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this for my daughter at 9 mos. She was already pulling up and cruising on furniture. I thought this would be helpful for her to get around the other areas of the house with my help. Unfortunately, it's very unsturdy and the wheels go quickly. There isn't any resistance for beginning walkers, so they will lean on the walker and it will shoot forward. I thought using it on the carpet (rather than our wood floors) might help, but no difference.

By reading the description, it sounds like a great transition toy. I think you should save the money and just use an overturned box or laundry basket. Same effect.

The only upside is that she enjoys the car mode when I push her. Perhaps she will grow into this toy once she walks independently. However, I think that defeats the purpose and description of this toy. It'll sit and gather dust until she wants to ride on it.
