Toys and Games Reviews of Playskool Step Start Walk 'n Ride - Colors May VaryCustomer Review: Not even worth $5 Summary: 1 Stars
We received this as a gift when our daughter was 11 months old. She was already at that time quite proficient at "cruising", that is, walking assisted by furniture, etc. She was basically walking on her own two weeks after we got this. I was hoping it would be a big help to her, and fun, until she got to the point where she could walk steadily on her own (you know, around 18 months or so). The thing is, this toy, as a "walker" is very poorly designed: the wheels go so fast when they push it that is just flies out from under her every time she tried to push it. She quickly lost any interest in it. Even as a "car" toy, the same problem. Many walker toys have a simple mechanism that prevent the wheels from turning too fast so that baby does fall on her face as toy shoots out from under her across the floor.
I really can't see paying more than $3 for this at a yard sale. It is, in my humble opinion it is an overpriced piece of Made-in-China plastic JUNK. An insult to the land-fill it will inevitably end up in. No thanks!
Customer Review: Great little toy Summary: 4 Stars
I read the reviews that say that this toy doesn't work as a walker. This is a walk behind, not a walker. It works wonderfully when used correctly. It isn't the type of walker that's made to support a child's weight. It's the type you use when the child can already stand on his/her own. I've tried several types of walkbehinds at playgroups and they all tip over if your child can't fully support his/her weight. My daughters got this 2 months before they started walking, just before they got to the cruising the furniture stage and they loved it as a walk behind. Even now that they can walk, they still love to walk behind this toy. The ride on toy doesn't hold their interest much and is a little small (their feet more than touch the ground, but they're too small to push it themselves), but they love it as a walk behind. It's extremely easy to switch back and forth between the two modes. You can do it with one hand. Yet it's secure enough that the child can't switch it him/herself. My girls love it and I'm quite pleased with it.
Customer Review: OK toy, but not the safest Summary: 3 Stars
We bought this toy for our 1 year old son for Christmas (he's a little behind in learning to walk, due to being born prematurely). He likes playing with the various spinning toys and the lift up compartment, but as far as a walker goes I don't feel it's all that safe. Our house is nearly entirely carpeted and the wheels barely move on the carpet. I've tried it on the bare kitchen floor, and saw minimal improvement in the rolling. It also tends to go off course very easily and runs into walls. Probably worst of all, because of it's narrow base, if it hits the slightest resistance the walker tips over, taking my son down with it. We borrowed a different walker which is a little bigger and heavier, and has a wider base, and it works so much better. It never tips, rolls very easily on the carpet, and is even more fun because it lights up and plays songs. If I were making this purchase over again, I would definitely avoid the Playskool walker and go for something with a wider base and a little more heft.

Customer Review: Not worth the money Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this toy second hand really cheap-and am glad I did. My toddler hasn't used it much for what it's meant for (walking and riding). She does love playing with the spinning rattle and opening and closing the compartment. Otherwise, though she really isn't very interested in it-and never has been. She prefers other ride on toys-like a blanket or a car we got elsewhere. As far as the person who said it was only a carpet toy-I disagree. We have carpet and laminate-and it rolls much better as a ride on toy on the laminate. It does not work well on the carpet at all. I do not recommend this toy unless you find it really cheap.
Added Jan. 2007:
Another note, my daughter is on the tall side for her age (95%+ every time)-and she began outgrowing this before she turned 2, as a ride-on toy. Her legs are too long to bend at the right spot and be comfortable. So, if you have a tall child and hope they'll be able to use it until they are 3, think about a different ride-on.
