Toys and Games Reviews of Playskool Step Start Walk 'n Ride - Colors May VaryCustomer Review: Maybe it's better not to be too many things at once... Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this for my daughter because she was just beginning to cruise and needed to develop some confidence. As a walker this toy works pretty well. My daughter pushed it all over the house, and it seemed to help her gain the confidence to become a walker. Once she was walking fully, she pushed it all over for the fun of pushing.
As a rider, this toy has real drawbacks. Like another reviewer said, the wheels are too close together, so her legs hit the back wheels when moving forward. Also, they don't spin very well. This is great when walking because it slows the unit down, but my daughter found it very frustrating to ride because she couldn't go anywhere without a lot of effort.
The gadgets are a mixed blessing. The spinners and clickers are great, but the antenna on the back gets in the way (especially when you convert it to a riding toy), and my daughter was actually reduced to tears on a couple of occasions because her leg kept getting stuck when she tried to get off.
If you're going to get it, don't pay full price. I donated mine to daycare.
Customer Review: I THINK I AM GOING TO UPGRADE TO SOMETHING STURDIER AND FUN Summary: 3 Stars
THIS TOY IS OK. MY 10 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER RECIEVED THIS THIS YEAR FOR CHRISTMAS. SHE IS NOT REALLY INTERESTED IN THE ACTIVITES ON THE FRONT OF THE TOY AND REALLY SINCE SHE HAS GOTTEN IT HAS NOT ACTED TOO INTERESTED IN IT. IT IS PRETTY SMALL AND LOW TO THE GROUND WHICH IS OK FOR US RIGHT NOW BECAUSE SHE IS SHORT AND LIGHT WEIGHT RIGHT NOW (ONLY 16-17 POUNDS). SHE HAS PULLED HERSELF UP ON THE TOY AND WALKED WITH IT A LITTLE BIT BUT ONLY BECAUSE SHE KNEW THAT IF SHE DIDN'T WALK THAT SHE WOULD FALL SO SHE HAD TO KEEP UP WITH IT SEEING AS HOW IT ROLLS VERY EASILY. OUR CARPET IS PRETTY THICK AND MOVES VERY EASILY ON IT AND QUICKLY. I WOULD DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMEND THIS WALKING TOY TO A CHILD WHO IS JUST STARTING TO WALK ESPECIALLY ON THIN OR FLAT CARPET. I HOPE SHE PLAYS WITH IT A LITTLE MORE THAN SHE HAS. I ALSO WISH THAT THE TOYS ON THIS WALKER/RIDE ON TOY HAD A LITTLE MORE TO THEM. IT IS PRETTY BORING. I WISH THAT I WOULD SPENT AN EXTRA 20 DOLLARS ON THE V-TECH ELECTRONIC WALKER INSTEAD BUT FOR RIGHT NOW I AM GOING TO STICK TO THIS ONE AND MAYBE FOR HER B-DAY SHE WILL GET A BETTER ELECTRONIC ONE.
Customer Review: freedom of mobility Summary: 4 Stars
My son got this toy for his first birthday and it couldn't have come at a better time. He was just starting to walk but was having trouble staying on his feet for anything longer than 30 seconds. This toy was great! He loved pushing it around and took to it immediately. the toy is sturdy, easy to put together and converts between walker and rider with a snap and a lock of the lever.
I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because, aside from converting between walker/rider, there aren't too many bells and whistles. There are a couple of button type things that make small rattle like noises and there is a compartment with a lid that my son likes to open and close, but that's about it. Overall, once we've pushed the walker around the house a couple of times, we're done with it. I've tried converting it to a rider and that holds his interest for a couple of minutes, but he now has a beginner tricycle and a cozy coupe car that are way more fun to ride on.
So, for a brief window of time, this toy was the best! Unfortunately, he outgrew it very quickly.
Customer Review: Great ride on, not a great "walker" Summary: 3 Stars
My daughter got this for her first birthday. I'm giving it three stars (even though she likes it) only because it can't serve it's purpose as a walker.
Getting this together for the most part is easy (you're going to have to put some muscle into it), but the instructions leave something to be desired. In order for this to go from ride on to walker, you have to screw a peice on. Not so great.
As a walker, I can't recommend this. It rolls VERY easily, even on carpet. This makes it too fast for my girl to keep up with and she ends up falling on her knees. It's also not all that manueverable in that she can't turn it and it's something she can only go in a straight line for.
As a ride on? Lots of fun! It's the *only* reason I'm giving it three stars and if we had another nice ride on to compare it to, it might not even get that.
She likes the toys and it's low enough and wide enough that she can climb on and off by herself. She actually uses this for walking too. She just walks sideways and sometimes pushes it along. (:
Customer Review: Disappointing...Fisher-Price Stride-To-Ride Lion is Much Better Summary: 3 Stars
I was disappointed in this toy when I purchased it for my then- 9 month-old daughter. I had hoped that the toy would help her learn to walk by supporting her weight and allowing her to take steps behind it. It's top-heavy and would fall over every time. This was very frustrating for her! Instead of using it as a walker, we turned it into a riding toy, but she didn't enjoy that either. The little antennae sticking up in the back made it hard for her to get off the toy. A couple of months later, we found a Fisher-Price Stride-To-Ride Lion in a consignment shop. My daughter started playing with it immediately, and since it was in good condition, we purchased it. This toy is definitely THE walk-to-ride toy to get your baby/toddler. The lion laughs and plays fun music when his nose is pushed. The toy is also much sturdier for the new walker. My daughter walked behind this toy, and it didn't fall over or frustrate her. At 22 months, she still enjoys the toy and rides it in her playroom. Definitely go for the Fisher-Price lion over the Playskool Walk-n-Ride!!
