Toys and Games Reviews of Playskool Step Start Walk 'n Ride - Colors May Vary

Customer Review: Ok for what it is.
Summary: 3 Stars

I wanted something simple and cheap for my very eager 11 month old son to practice walking with, and that's pretty much all this is.

We only have carpet and it rolls a little fast, but is manageable. I wouldn't recommend it for hard floors, though.
I was a little disappointed when we pulled it out of the box and started putting it together - it's pretty gaudy and not terribly sturdy. It also seems a little awkward to walk behind - the wheels are almost at the same width that my son steps at, so he bumps them sometimes with his feet.
I don't find the transition from walker to rider too difficult, although I did pinch my finger the first time I snapped it up to a walker, so be sure to watch where your (and baby's) hands are.

My son likes both modes, but I can't see him getting a whole lot of use out of it, simply because he'll soon outgrow it - he's not a particularly big baby, but he already seems too big for the rider.

All of that said, he giggles madly when he uses it and seems to really enjoy it. It's not an especially brilliant, solid walker, but it does the job for us.

Customer Review: We have owned this toy for 5 years & it is still working great!
Summary: 5 Stars

We received this toy as a gift for my son's first birthday in 2003. He was just learning to walk and this really helped him build up the strength in his legs. He got more confident with it and faster and faster with this walker. It is also a nice toy to ride on because it is low to the ground. So if your little one loses his balance, he doesn't have far to fall. I have had 3 more children since we received this gift. My now 3 1/2 year old daughter also enjoyed practicing to walk with it. Her favorite thing to do was ride on it. My almost 2 year old LOVED this toy. He took quite a while to decide to walk so he played with this toy longer than the other 2. He would chase his brother and sister around and got really confident with this toy. We have friends over to play and all babies/toddlers really love playing with it. None of my kids have been as into the toys on the walker except for the compartment on the front where they can hide things. It does convert between riding and pushing very easily. Overall this is a great toy and after 5 years it still looks just as good as the day we got it!

Customer Review: Don't waste your money
Summary: 2 Stars

I must say I am very disappointed I spend my money on this. I bought it for my 10 month-old daughter, who is already "cruising" around the house and I thought this was going to help her make her first steps. In the walk behind mode my daughter almost planted her face on the floor for when she tried to push it the wheels didn't even move, they just slide (on tile floors). It tips over, it's too light to support her weight if she's trying to stand holding onto it. Also, the space for the feet in the base it's way too narrow for their feet. She didn't even wanted to it again.

In ride-on mode it's OK, still too slippery but more manageable. This is toy for SMALL BABIES!! The handle bar is way too low, my daughter is 28 inches tall and she has to bend a little when holding the toy. And when she's riding it she barely fits!

I gave it two stars because even though it's awful for its' supposedly purpose it does entertain my daughter as she likes to play mechanic with the wheels and every single screw hole. And she loooves the little compartment in the front. She hides her binky there.

Customer Review: Huge hit!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this for my 8 month old who was just starting to show signs of walking readiness and I was a little concerned due to some of the negative reviews but still decided to take a risk since it seemed to have more bang for the buck (since it also is a ride-on). I am so pleased that I did!

My daughter loves it and was able to use it rather well right from the start! I have wood laminate floors and I was worried it would take off like a shot but that has never been a problem. She can just as easily control it on the laminate as she can the carpet. She has also never had a problem with the design of the wheels (others mentioned it being awkward).

It easily transforms from one style to the other and assembled easily.

When it is in the ride-on mode it sits low enough that after the first couple of tries she could easily get herself on and off without me worrying about spills. And since it can hold up to 40 pounds my 4 year old can also ride around on it when he gets the whim.

Overall I can find no fault with this toy and highly recommend it.

Customer Review: Worked really well for us
Summary: 5 Stars

My son received this toy for his first birthday and it quickly became a favorite. One of the other moms pointed out that her child fell forward when using this as a walker. My son had the same problem, but we got around it: my husband pulled the lower half of each wheel out, sort of like a toe-out old VW bug, which meant the wheels couldn't spin, but just slide along the floor. That slowed things down enough so my son could push and walk at his own pace. When he got more secure on his feet, my husband pushed the wheels back in so they'd spin easily, and my son just pushed the toy around faster, steering around furniture. My son likes to open the trunk (the green part in the front) and put things in and take them out. He never really used this as a ride-on toy--too small for him. Overall, nicely made. No sharp edges. Some slight assembly required--snapping parts together. Ours was missing one of the (blue part at left of green trunk), but no big deal. Seat is shaped like a western saddle, for any parents who want to introduce their child to the feel of a saddle shape at a young age.
