My husband and I were very disappointed in this toy for our toddler twins -- though really, the disappointment is my own fault, since I did not take the time to really check this toy out before buying it. I saw the gears in the online photo, and remembered a toy I had when I was little, where all the gears could be moved around in different patterns -- and then thinking about that toy, I bought this modern toy. Well, old and new are NOT the same. The good news is that both our boys liked this toy and one of them LOVED it, to the point of crying hysterically when it was taken away for the night. The bad news is that as far as I can tell, this toy teaches the child very little, since the gears can only be arranged in one pattern if you want them to go around. My one boy clearly found this toy absolutely mesmerizing, and would punch the button over and over again, reveling in the music and lights. My husband found our son's behavior disturbing ("He's acting like it's a Vegas slot machine!") and after we both decided that our son was getting nothing out of it but a penchant for pushing buttons and watching the wheels turn, we banished it to the garage.
So if you are looking for something to mesmerize your kid and keep him/her out of your hair for a little while, this is the toy! (And hey, I am the first to admit that sometimes that's all you need!) But if you are looking for a toy with some educational value, I don't think this is it.
