Toys and Games Reviews of Nerf N-Strike Firefly REV-8

Customer Review: Cool gun...
Summary: 4 Stars

So this is the Nerf firefly that everyone has been talking about.
The firefly (Nerf Firefly Rev-6 as to speak) has eight shots, a flash ability, and extra ammo holders. Hmm...

Well, first let's talk about the gun structure. It's bigger than I would have thought. The stock goes up against my shoulder. But bulkness is needed in this gun to store the eight ammo holders, I guess. It's extremely sturdy. (No nerf gun of mine has every broke!) However, there are one part that are not needed (In my opinion). Have you every seen the firefly? There is a pretty big gap where you hold the trigger and handle. I wonder what that's for? Support or something? Maybe you're supposed to put your other hand there...

Now for it's special abilites. The firefly (Nerf Firefly Rev-6 as to speak) has eight shots, a flash ability, and extra ammo holders. Hmm...

The eight shots are pretty useful, especially if you're under fire. Most Nerf guns have six shots or so. (Clips hold 6 bullets I think) However, the ammo that comes with it is not too good. Mine almost got lost more times than my orange ones. You're supposed to add these glowy stickers to it. But that decreases the range by like 3 feet. However, the stickers do do their job well. Even if it's not very dark, you can see them glow in reaction to the flash(I'll get to the flash later) It's your choice whether or not to put the stickers on. If you don't, the tips glow(The suction part thingy). The ammo itself has bad range. It fires like 3 less feet than the orange ammo. With the orange ammo I can fire farther than my Maverick. ;) Just try to use the orange ammo if you can. (I can't)

Now for the flash ability. It's much brighter than I expected it to be. If it's not dark, you can still see the flash from your point of view. (You're seeing the back of the gun, not the barrel where the flash comes from) It charges up the darts really well. My friend told me that he was blinded by it before (Not forever! Just for a couple of seconds). Well, the flash would be really unexpected if you're playing at night. the flash requires two double a batteries. (AA) It actually doesn't use up too much batteries.

The ammo holders are useful too. In the heat of battle you can pick up ammo and put it there. If you're out of ammo, you have an extra clip in your gun ready. USEFUL! But that's what's it was made for, I guess. However, the ammo holders have a drawback. First of all, you can't put streamers (The ammo for the longshot and recon) in it or they'll slide out. The other thing is if you turn the gun upside down, the ammo can fall out easily. The last thing is that it's kinda hard to reload with ammo in your ammo holder. It's good, just be wary.

The gun is actually harder than I thought it would be to cock it. And a note: the trigger is rather hard to pull for me, so I recommend using your index and middle finger.

That's it!
Sorry if there's any mistakes ;(
(A kid's review, too)

Customer Review: A Dad's Thoughts on the REV-8
Summary: 4 Stars

My son is 4-1/2 and has very good saving habits and is very responsible and thoughtful when picking toys. When he wanted a toy gun that went a bit beyond the guns he was building out of Lego's or my old Lazer Tag guns, he bee-lined for the Nerf guns.

Now, I've got a rather unusual son for his age. He checked out all the options carefully at a local store in making his choice. He passed over both the simple cock-and-shoots as well as the biggest-and-baddest. When I asked why, he said this gun was just right because a) it held 8 shots and b) it was small enough for him to use easily. He passed over the copy-cat guns because he didn't think they were made as well and would break. He likes the glow-in-the-dark feature, but that really wasn't a major factor in his selection. Not bad thinking, for 4-1/2.

We got it home and out and he didn't even wait to install the batteries before he had it loaded and firing. He fires it rifle-style two-handed from the shoulder and though he has to drop it from firing position to cock, he's able to cycle the rounds well enough bolt-action style. He tried the darts both with and without the glow-in-the dark stickers and even though they took a bit off the range, he decided he liked the effect with them on.

With regard to some of the comments on range, accuracy and easy of use, I've got to say, that none of the complaints have been seen with my son. He's spent much of the last three days emptying the chamber into me from hiding spots typically 12-15 feet away, nailing me consistently. No has he had problems using the bolt action with his 4-1/2 year old muscles. It's a bit tight for him, but within his strength for extended play. He's popping off shots in under 10 seconds repeatedly with good accuracy. As far as maximum range, I was getting shots across our great room, dining room and sticking to the fridge in the kitchen - easily 25+ feet with enough "bang" to get in trouble from my wife who was cooking dinner and narrowly missed. ;-) Obviously, on the longer range shots you will have to take the flight arc into account - especially if you have the extra weight of the stickers on the dart. However, even my 4-year old manage to figure that out on his own. Unfortunately. For me.

I think a reality check needs to be made in evaluating the REV-8. It is a child's toy not a competition tag piece. I'm certain that there are other Nerf guns that have both greater range and accuracy. That's why Nerf makes two lines of guns: for play and for tag. If you want a toy to have fun with and perhaps a Nerf war, it's good. If you're more competition focused you would be better looking at the Nerf tag line.

Customer Review: Nice gun
Summary: 5 Stars

Alright, this was my 3rd Nerf gun. I got it about two years ago. The design is very cool, taking on a whole new look. Not like a traditional gun of any type. The trigger is at the front of the gun, instead of the middle or back. It has a tactical rail for Nerf accesories. The darts are easy to load into the gun. I like this loading system better than the clip system used by the Raider, Recon, and Longshot, but only a little better. The advantages of this over the clips is that you can load a dart back in after firing it. With the clips you have to fire all the darts in order to reload efficiently. With this REV system, you can fire a dart, pick it up, and reload it into the the gun without having to fire off all the darts. The darts that come with this thing are good in the sense that they "glow", but they don't shoot that far. I think this is due to the glow tape that you have to put on. It rubs against the sides and causes friction because the tape is similar to sandpaper. I think it would be a wise decision on Nerf' part to somehow infuse the glowing stuff into the foam on the dart. You don't have to put the tape on, then just the suction tips glow. I would reccommend getting some orange darts with the blue tips. I did, and it improved accuracy and range significantly. You won't get the glow effect, but for me, it's worth it to have more range and accuracy than glowing darts. Another thing, if you're Nerfing at night, and are using the glow darts, you'll want them to glow, right? In order for them to glow, you must have batteries, which powers a flash bulb -similar to a camera- in the gun, which makes the dart glow. You can switch the flash on and off. The flash is triggered by the trigger being pulled. In theory, this is great. Glowing darts for night wars. Awesome, right? Not neccesarily. First of all, in the night, nobody's going to be able to see you, right? So you can attack in surprise, right? Not with this gun. Firstly, the flash going off will most certainly give away your hard-found position. Secondly, if your opponent has a sharp eye, he will see where the glowing dart is coming from. If your opponent his a bit of a scaredy-cat, though, you could probably scare him into a faint with this thing. Not likely though. This gun is still very good, and I like it a lot. Happy Nerfing!

Customer Review: Great for shooting zombies, not as good for targets
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this for a game of Humans vs. Zombies. I've taken it apart, tinkered with it, and fired it a lot, and I think it's a really nice Nerf gun.

What I like:
-It fires darts from a cylinder instead of a magazine. Magazine-fed guns like Recons and Deploys can jam and demolish your darts.
-You can load more darts without removing a magazine or swinging out a cylinder.
-The cylinder will always advance to the next dart when you pull the trigger. The Firefly ratchet can't slip like a Maverick ratchet can.
-Eight dart capacity is above average, eight darts held in reserve is useful.
-It's light, comfortable, easy to prime.
-Sling mounts are sturdy.
-The flash effect is actually pretty cool. In a dark room the glow darts look like laser beams--but leave the labels off, because they hurt performance.
-For modders, you may be glad to hear that it's got a direct piston (not inverse like a Maverick), and it has a rubber seal between the piston and the cylinder to minimize air leaks.

What I don't like:
-Sights would have been nice.
-Not as accurate as a Maverick.
-Same stock power as a Maverick.

The cons above may seem like deal breakers, but they shouldn't be. Removing the pegs and air brakes in this gun is easy and completely reversible, and you'll see a significant range boost. The accuracy is not as good as a Maverick, but for zombies you're shooting at human targets within 30 feet, and that's not a problem for this gun.

If you want a Nerf gun to shoot your buddies with, this is a great option. If you're looking for a more accurate gun to just shoot posters in your room or the people on your TV screen, a Maverick is a better choice.

Happy Nerfing!

Customer Review: Not the best buy overall...
Summary: 2 Stars

These are fun toys, but not the best of the bunch.

Cons:

1. There are eight rotating barrels, and eight darts with the gun, so if you lose one, your down a barrel.
2. The cocking mechanism is on the top, and is often hard to reach quickly and comfortably
3. the butt stock is very uncomfortable against the shoulder, leaves my arm sore after a while
4. the fore-grip has no place to grip with your offhand, leaving your hand wandering aimlessly.
5. The glow in the dark dark darts.... don't... You have to apply cheap glow-stickers to the darts to make them really glow, otherwise the tiny tips are all that glows.
6. The gun is very weak, it only shoots about 7-10 feet effectively before your aiming at a full 45 degree angle just to arc your darts to the target.
7. the flash Function that "charges" the glowing darts requires two AA batteries and Only works about every fifth time you pull trigger (or about once every 20-30 seconds really... )
8. The gun itself does not emit any light except when the trigger is pulled and only if the internal capacitor is charged. The pictures have the thing looking like its lit up like a Christmas tree.

Pros:
1: It has the ability to fire VERY rapidly, given your ability to cock, aim and pull the trigger in rapid succession.. there is no mechanical limitation to to limit the speed at which it fires.
2: Though not accurate, the gun is extremely reliable and Consistent... which means if it shoots to the left once, it will likely do it the other 7 times you shoot it also, but it will shoot 8 times every time.

Overall very fun, but awfully dissapointing.
