Toys and Games Reviews of Namco Original Arcade TV Games Video Game SystemCustomer Review: Had Problems.... Summary: 1 Stars
Bought one at TRU. Got it home, put in new batteries. Turned it on and noticed that the screen was VERY DIM! Not an issue with my TV, since I have the Pac Man and the Atari version of Jakk's and they both work fine. Tried to play anyway (although I knew I'd be taking it back based on the video). Joystick didn't work with Pole Position (of course, now I know that maybe you need to "twist" it?). Tried Ms Pacman. Wouldn't go up anddown as you would expect it to. Maybe it's only a problem if you're trying to move from the LEFT or RIGHT position directly to the UP or DOWN position? Maybe you have to bring the joystick back to CENTER before moving UP or DOWN? Anyway, that's not the way it should work! The real game never had that issue! I noticed that the joystick is an 8-way joystick, so maybe that's part of the problem? The original Ms Pacman would have presumably had a 4-way joystick, since you can only move in 4 directions.Anyway, I took it back and swapped it out. Brought the second one home, and it didn't work AT ALL! When you turn it on, the video is either blank or you get a bunch of crap on the screen! I'm VERY Maybe some QA (testing) would have been nice?????
Customer Review: Unfair Version Summary: 1 Stars
I've noticed that most of the complaints listed here are due to poor joystick construction or malfunctions. Mine work perfectly! That's not my complaint. Am I the only one who dumped hundreds of quarters into these machines in the 80's!??? Does anyone remember that they raised the difficulty levels on these machines as people got better at them to the point of being virtually unplayable? 1 or 2 stages into the game and the ghosts in PacMan are moving at unescapeable speeds as if you were already past stage 30! The moles in DigDug are already burrowing out of their homes and the dragons are lighting you up through the walls in stage 1!!! Xevious??? Any expert knows that the tiny, speed-diamond ships don't attack until at least 15 minutes into the game!
This is so unfair. Unfair because I was very excited about this stroke-of-genious idea from Jakks Pacific offering exact duplications of these wonderful games but killing the whole idea and fun by giving us the worst, most undesireable versions of these games. It's like you're only being allowed to preview the games.
Other than that, if I didn't know any better, I would give them a 5-star rating.
Customer Review: I am in Pac Heaven!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm telling you now...this is the best $ I have ever spent for gaming entertainment. I was a major addict of Ms. Pac Man in the eighties and spent countless hours playing it at the arcade. Having this game at home, in such as well-developed but simple system is fantastic. I must challenge one of the other reviewers, however. I was very skilled at Ms. Pac Man years ago: able to reach the 4th level of screens pretty often. I agree that this version is more difficult. They move much faster at lower levels and they do "disperse" quickly making it difficult to capture all four ghosts after eating a power pill. My response to this is SO WHAT!!! Everything is relative. While I routinely scored over 200,000 points on the old version in the eighties, I am playing very well if I get 50,000 on this version. The game is a little more exciting with the ghosts being more challenging. There's nothing wrong with that...it doesn't make this a bad machine. You simply have to change your expectations accordingly. Thank you Namco for making Ms. Pac Man available at home to those who really loved playing the game years ago. I am absolutely delighted with the machine and can't wait to play it again.
Customer Review: MS PACMAN PLUG N PLAY - Yahoo! Summary: 5 Stars
What you get are 5 games playable from a small unit that is basically just a joystick and a fire button! MS PACMAN, XEVIOUS, MAPPY, POLE POSITION, and GALAGA are all here in an easily portable package which requires batteries (the only gripe!). The games are pretty much exactly like the arcade ... well ... almost. In some cases sounds have been altered, but very strong ports most people will never notice the difference. Improvements over the last NAMCO PLUG N PLAY include a more rounded base that makes it more comfortable, and the fire and reset buttons are now farther apart so less accidental restarts. You still can't do two player, and there is no saving high scores or pausing the unit. The games are great! MS PACMAN is the star, and GALAGA would have to be a close 2nd - both play very closely to their quarter chomping cabinet counter parts! POLE POSITION suffers a little without a steering wheel, and XEVIOUS and MAPPY are strong recreations of games that weren't as popular but a welcome addition! And it's all a bargain at $19.99 - what you would spend to get just XEVIOUS as a GBA cartridge. So grab the joystick and get ready to go retro!
Customer Review: Fun Video Games for a Low Price Summary: 5 Stars
This unique console contains five great video games from the heyday of the arcade; Ms. Pac Man, Galaga, Pole Position, Xevious, and Mappy. I must say that I bought this unit more or less for Galaga alone. When I was a teenager, I could play Galaga for hours, and I was impressed by the exactness of the game on this unit. The only qualm I have is that sometimes it is difficult to manipulate the fire button with your thumb. It would be much easier if the game was designed for fingertip fire control. Besides this, I really enjoy this unit very much.
The other games included on this unit are fun to play as well. Pole Position works extremely well, and the top of the fire button can be "turned" like a steering wheel to keep the car on the track. The other games are faithfully reproduced to give them their exact arcade look from the 80s. I should also mention that this game does require four AA batteries.
I give this fun arcade game my highest recommendation. The installation is quick and easy. Just plug it into the input/output jacks of your TV, and you're set to play some of the classic arcade favorites of the 1980s.
