Toys and Games Reviews of NERF N-STRIKE Vulcan EBF-25 Value PackCustomer Review: Another Nerf blaster for the modder crowd Summary: 4 Stars
Have you read my other Nerf blaster review?
This is another blaster for those who like to tinker. As sold, it's a big heavy effete lump of intimidating plastic. It takes 6 D-cell batteries, but if the voltage drops a little, it will fail to cycle. No, the batteries aren't dead. They're just not strong enough to power the motor.
But there's a VERY easy solution. 9-volt batteries!! There's a very nice video online for what must be the best Vulcan hack to-date.
Remove the battery tray
Wire two 9-volt batteries in series (+ to -)
Attach to the contacts in the tray(+ to +, - to -)
Reinstall battery tray
Now you have enough juice to cycle the motor and deliver darts at a decent rate and power. But it's only just decent. 25 rounds per belt and a range comparable to an unmodded Maverick just doesn't add up to the sort of suppressive fire this SHOULD be able to dish out. Though swapping belts may make you feel like Rambo, it's too slow of a process in cubicle warfare.
For my money, the solution is a Recon with 35 round drum:
Drums swap out as quickly as a mag
Each drum hold 35 rounds (10 more than a belt)
A Recon without barrel and stock is very compact
Sadly, the drum is not yet available without the purchase of a Raider, but it will be. But buying a Raider isn't a bad idea. The Raider is a lousy blaster, but in addition to the drum, it comes with an excelent telescoping stock that will attach to a new Recon. Older Recons like mine with the "ARMED" tube will not function with this stock.
Customer Review: Don't waste your money!!!! Summary: 1 Stars
This toy is pretty cool when you first get it out of the box. However, after 3 days of use (Christmas, 2008) I found it stopped working all together. I could hear the motor trying to do something and I checked that the batteries were good, but the gun would not fire.
After the first of this year I contacted the merchant (Toys R Us) and asked them what I should do. They told me that I would need to contact the manufacturer (Nerf) regarding the matter. They told me that Nerf would probably want me to send it back. I tried to contact Nerf, but found that their website would not allow me to navigate the drop down menu for Customer Service (how convenient).
After several months, I decided to open up the gun and try to at least review the working mechanism to determine what might be wrong. I found the most worthless plastic parts (very little electronics) to ever be spewed out of the petroleum industry. A lot of parts had flash still on them, the gear box (all plastic, not metal) had gears that barely, if at all, fit together and various other defects in the plastic molding that come from shoddy, half baked, curing or extrusion.
If your considering buying this product, I would recommend you ask the merchant about a clear path to returning the item should it have problems. As for me, I look forward to the challenge of trying to repair it myself and try to enhance it so I can say my gun is faster and cooler than the original.
Customer Review: A good concept poorly executed Summary: 1 Stars
Let me start by saying, if this thing worked as advertised, it would be amazing. I'd give them to adults I know as gifts. However, the plain fact is the Nerf Vulcan has serious quality control/design issues. The reviews on the other amazon entry for this product complaining about the jams etc are not flukes. It would be cool if it worked, it doesn't.
Xmas morning, half a belt run through it and it is down for the count. The cocking mechanism no longer works, the belt won't advance. Return it to the store for an exchange. 3 shots with the new one and it is down for the count. Cocking mechanism no longer works, the belt won't advance. Being an FFL and someone who works with real guns, including building them, I am kind of frustrated and go to customer service with Hasbro thinking "surely there is some trick to this." No help trouble shooting from Hasbro, just apologies and "we've had lots of problems, please box it and send it back." 4 weeks later I get a nice letter saying they are out of stock and cannot replace our gun. Here we are, 2 months after xmas, and we still have not received what we paid for. The gee whiz factor of this gun would be immense if the thing actually worked. The unavoidable truth is the gun simply does not work. If you got one that runs, hold onto it with both hands and baby it, because you seem to have the exception and not the rule.
Nerf, you owe your public a tangible apology for this mess.
Customer Review: Great For Office Negotiations Summary: 5 Stars
I actually ordered this from [...] since the value pack is cheaper there ($[...], same price as the gun itself).
Pros:
- Sheer number of darts is pretty staggering. Three people on my team have vulcans and when we hit someone's office, it will quite literally carpet the floor in darts
- Accepts any Micro darts. I bought a couple packs of the tagger darts so that as I lose darts, I can keep the belt full.
- Has rails, so if you've got any rail-mounted accessories, they work here (I recommend the red dot light from the Recon if you've got it)
Cons:
- Ammo box gets knocked off easily. Combined with the fact that it jams a lot if you don't have the ammo box on, it means you can end up looking silly (okay, sillier) if you try to bust in to someone's office, knock off the ammo box on the door frame and then jam three rounds later.
- Reloading takes an age. Fortunately, the value pack comes with a second belt, and loading a new belt is pretty quick. I still recommend having something else for reloading.
- You'll probably get one used against you at some point if they get popular in the office. I recommend a meat shield.
Anyway, it's a lot of toy for $[...]. If you're in to Nerf, it's well worth it, just keep something handheld around for quick use.
Customer Review: Fun Fun Summary: 4 Stars
After receiving this item I put it together and after the first test shot, it BROKE. Talk about disappointment for a 6 year old. We returned it no problem to Amazon, and purchased the same one at Toys are US, same day. Try telling a 6 year old to wait 5 days.
The gun jams very easy and has a lot of misfires. Its not that durable. I had to teach my son to STOP firing if it jams, otherwise is shears a gear off inside and its useless. The second gun works fine after about a month. The secret to not jammin is 3 things:
1. Make sure you load the bullet string with the logo outword. The bullet clips have writing on one side and blank on the other. If after you load the bullet string look at the bullet casing. If you don't see any writing, its in backwards. Pull it out and start from the other end. No directions on this so maybe its just my luck, but it makes a difference.
2. make sure you push all the bullets in all the way. If they hang out a little they will jam.
3. Use the bullets they come with. Not other ones with the plunger on the end.
Besides that its a lot of fun. Takes 10 mins to collect all your bullets and reload and about 30s to go through a full clip. Not perfect, jams and missfires, not superdurable, but overall a good item. I would recommend, cause its BAD @ss!
