Toys and Games Reviews of Monopoly Junior Edition

Customer Review: Smaller is Better
Summary: 5 Stars

Anyone who is familar with the original Monopoly will appreciate this scaled down version. It contains all the fun of the original, with a couple of new twists. The smaller board & lower prices on property & "rent" allow for a quicker, less demanding game. And the added twist of being able to bump other players' ticket booths off a site allows for unexpected turns in the outcome of the game. The game is fun for ages through adult, not just the 5-8 specified by the box. Younger children who are not able to read or count money will need help, but our 6 year old had no problem grasping the concepts, and joining in on the fun even without being able to read the cards. In addition, anyone who has been "held hostage" by amusement park prices for food will appreciate the irony that the original "Jail" and "Go To Jail" has been replaced by "Lunch" and "Go To Lunch." :-) What I would change - the player markers are too big to fit on the board well, and we had difficulty when more than one person landed on a square. I know the cars where made big to make it easier for little hands to grasp, but these are too big for the board.

Customer Review: Fun for the family
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this for my husband' birthday because he loves Monopoly and wanted a game to play with our 4 year old daughter. She is a little angry the bank and my husband keep taking her money, but she likes the activities they have on the board that you pay for, like watching fireworks, going to a water park, etc... things that in real life we do and pay for that she sees as a special treat.

The box was fairly flimsy- it was bent during shipping, hence the durability marking being lower. The pieces seem like they will hold up, but the money and cards are made out of the same materials as the original monopoly, so with younger kids they may end up being ripped. The other thing I would have liked is for the pieces to have come in resealable bags. We have already ziplocked each set of players items to make sure we don't lose too many. There also is no plastic money divider for the banker like I remember the original having. That would have been another nice thing to include.

Overall- my husband and daughter are pleased to have a game to play together.

Customer Review: Finally, Monopoly in less than 6 hours!

This game is a new Christmas gift for my 4 year old and we have all had a ball with it. The properties are amusement park rides where you put up ticket booths. The denominations of money are from $1 to $5- they make a 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 dollar bill for the kids and all of the prices of property fall in that range. The chance cards often allow you to put up a ticket booth on a property for free-even if it means bumping off someone else's that was bought and paid for. Like the grown up version, the properties are seperated by color except that there are only two of each color. Once you own both, you are paid double the value. There are no cards to keep with graduated price scales. If you paid $3 for the ticket booth, you get $3 everytime someone lands on it. If you own both, you get twice that. The average game takes about 30 minutes but it can vary. It does require someone who can be a banker and a bit of reading and math-very little of both. But it is quickly becoming Jaclynn's favorite game. (She can read, but I do the banking-she's a notorious cheater!!) ;)

Customer Review: Excellent junior version suitable for pre-K-3
Summary: 5 Stars

My husband and I love Monopoly but needed something simpler to play it with our 4-year-old and the Monopoly Junior Edition fits the bill perfectly. The premise is simple and easy to understand, making it fun for our child. The game includes little ticket booths in various colors [ to correspond to one's chosen token] that can be 'purchased' and put on different places on the board, and which can then be used to charge 'rent' when another player's token lands on it. The currency denomination comes in $1, $2, $3, $4, and $5 and our 4-year-old was able to handle giving and taking of 'currency' quite well. The only thing that we had to help her with was reading out the "Chance" cards which require some level of reading skill.

Other than that, this is a fun game with simple rules that is not as competitive as the more grown-up version of Monopoly [which can even test the mettle of seasoned players!]. If your family loves Monopoly and wish to include young members in the game, then the Junior Monopoly may just fit the bill.

Customer Review: Manageable Monopoly!
Summary: 5 Stars

Monopoly always intrigued my kids (4 and 6), who tirelessly tried to play the adult version again and again. How exciting to find this Junior version! The kids love this game, and we can get through a game in 20-40 minutes. So far, my butt has been handed to me by both of them more often than I have won, which they absolutely love. The overwhelming choices in the adult version are virtually eliminated here. You land on an empty square, you have to buy it.

The game also teaches subtraction skills, and the rule that a dollar spent is a dollar spent. My oldest would make such an effort to get rid of her lower denominations before her precious $4 or $5. She finally learned that no matter how she used her money, five $1s are the same as one $5.

This is a fantastic game, encourages fun competition, and gives them a chance to even the playing field or create larger imbalances (the Free Ticket Booth card on spaces occupied by two other people). I wish more Junior versions were this good!
