Toys and Games Reviews of Monopoly Electronic Banking EditionCustomer Review: Guess I'm old-fashioned... Summary: 2 Stars
...but there's something to be said about the original game. Though the updated properties and utilities are fun, the new banking system slows the game way down. Our 13 year old got the game for Christmas and we've played it a few times, but it takes so long to check the cards for player balances and transactions, the technology takes away from the fun. She wanted to be the banker, of course, and it was really hard for her (or whomever plays the banker) to keep track of transactions and taking her own turns. And, we'd noticed that there were times when she didn't realize she'd taken the cards out before the transactions were complete, and that was frustrating to everyone. If I have to keep track of my own balances, I'd rather have a stack of money in front of me as an absolute.
It's essential to assign someone as the banker who is not participating as a player.
Gamers may enjoy the newness of the game, but I'd rather play one of the other themed games...We love the Lord of the Rings version.
Customer Review: Great, but still takes a while Summary: 4 Stars
This is great since you don't need to have all the money everywhere, but it still takes time to enter in all the payments, etc. Now to be fair, there are only three of us playing at a time and this may make a difference. If there were many people playing, or even a person just being the banker and not playing, it would be better. You are still waiting to have the banker enter in the values and such, so the play time is still slowed down.
There is no real money-counting educational value to the toy since it's just like using an ATM machine, more or less. You do have to do some math when deciding whether to buy a property or upgrade to more houses or hotels.
The real (and only) plus to this game is that you don't have the money all over the place and you don't have to count it out in the beginning or put it away at the end of the game. This was all I expected when I bought the game so we're perfectly happy with it and enjoy more room on the table. Worth the money? Absolutely! :)
Customer Review: Monopoly Electronic Banking Edition Summary: 4 Stars
My old monopoly game board was falling apart. The grandkids wanted to sit up all night and play monopoly, so what was a Grandma to do?
I loaded them up and headed to Walmart. I could not find the original version, so I found this one. I took it home, opened it up, and was quite impressed. There are more pieces with this. I was a man squatting, which to me, looks like he is trying to do something else.
But...the grandkids beat me. I let them be the banker, however, I think they cheated. With the electronic banking device, you stick your credit card in, loaded with money, and it takes away when you buy. If someone owes you money, you stick your card and their card in, and then you get the money loaded to your card. It's quite simple. I do miss the fake money. It's more bragging rights if you have a lot of money sticking out from under the board, on your side of the table. But...things are changing and you have to go with the flow.
Customer Review: Monopoly, only longer Summary: 3 Stars
Dont get me wrong, this version of monopoly is a lot of fun, but it has some draw backs. For one, you almost have to have a dedicated banker because transactions will take place almost every turn and it gets a little arduos after a while. Once we had all of the property in play, it seemed like our banker was almost constantly running cards and we were finding mistakes. One thing we decided to do for next time is to keep a check log of our expenses and incomes, that way we knew how much we had at all times and it might make things run a little smoother.
Another big draw back is that there is little room to customize your game. We always played that landing on free parking won you all of the tax money players had paid. This is non-existant unless you keep a log of how much has been paid. Hasbro could have made some easy enhancements to make the game more enjoyable. In all though as mentioned before, the game is good and the new interface is fun.
Customer Review: Banking system needs improvement Summary: 3 Stars
We played the electronic monopoly for the first time last night. The new properties and pieces were fun, but the biggest problem we had came from the banking system. With the new system of transferring money to and from accounts, the banker now has to be involved with EVERY transaction. In the standard Monopoly, if one player landed on another player's property, they just handed them the rent money. Now both players have to hand the banker their credit cards, and the banker has to transfer the money. It really gets to be a pain when the game is moving along, as it's way too easy to confuse whose card is whose if the game gets going quickly.
I know it's a bit out there in the future, but the ultimate solution would be to have wireless handsets, where each user wirelessly transfers money to and from each other and the bank. But at that point, why not just hand each other money?
