We bought 4 of these sets when they were on sale for 7.99 each. We gave one as a gift and kept the other three. I have two boys ages 4 and 6 - who needed help learning how to make these things. Once made, we placed them in their little "habitat" and my youngest son took them to bed with him. He doesn't want to sleep with the teddy bear, nope he wants to sleep with his little plastic aliens which really do look like shriveled gummy bears after a while. It's been a year since they started playing with these and the boys are 7 and 5 now. They now make aliens without my help.
PROS: very interesting for creative little ones who seem to love it
CONS: messy, have to supervise young children at first, have to buy refills eventually

We received this as a gift and I was not too thrilled, instantly thinking it would be a big mess. But it is not at all. It is actually quite fun and I've bought several of them to pass out as birthday presents through the year. There are endless combinations of aliens that can be made in various colors as well. If you time it for 3 minutes, your alien comes out firm on edges, but soft and gooey in the middle. Gross alert: you can then dissect it and have its insides spill out. Yes, the boys love it. If you time it for 5 minutes, it is set all the way through and nothing oozes out. It is one toy that the kids go back to time and time again. When they have friends over, it entertains the masses. My six year old had his choice of Chanukah gifts to open on the first night and begged for the Alien Maker!! He has been creating little aliens all night. The mess factor, at least in the steady hands of a six year old, is minimal, the aliens are pretty fun, and they have their own little black light stage to live in.
There is enough goop to keep coby engaged for many nights, and if we actually run out and he is still interested -- then I will have no problems getting him more.
Amazon had a particularly good price on this for the 2008 holiday season, which made this an even nicer purchase. Gotta say, I am 100percent pleased.

I thought this was going to be something original, but it just has molds in which you smash the play dough. Then you put a little bitty amount of the lava in the indentation. It eventually dries enough to take it out of the mold. Then it totally dries up. At no time can you tell what it was supposed to represent. This toy might be barely okay for a 5 year-old, but I think my 7-year-old granddaughter was bored within an hour. Just go buy some cheap play dough. This toy is not worth the money I spent, and that wasn't very much.Customer Review: Awesome toy! Make your own aliens. Display them in a light up pod or dissect them!

Right now 9.99 best deal on internet $29.99 everywhere else. My sons say this is a Mega Awesome toy. Not only do they get to make the aliens they can display them in a light up pod or choose to dissect them. the lighted pod is cool it glows a blue light. Every boys dream toy.
Great for girls too, my 4 year old grandaughter wants her own set to use with her mom's supervision.
Needless to say great gift. I bought 4 sets and will be buying more for when my boys get invites to birthday parties.
