Toys and Games Reviews of Martian Matter Alien Maker Playset - Spaceship

Customer Review: What a blast!
Summary: 4 Stars

My 8 y/o wanted this toy for his birthday. Personally, I was skeptical. I worried it would be too hard to use and prove to be boring.

Turns out, I needn't have worried.

He put it together himself in three minutes following the clear instructions. I showed him one time how to press the Martian Mud into the circular mold then close the hatch to make impressions with the figures he'd picked out. The Mud is quite easy for little hands to manipulate, and the bottles of Lava (the goo that makes the Martians) are easy for little hands to grasp, too.

He's been an alien-making fiend ever since, coming up with all sorts of combinations. He sometimes uses two colors of Lava to make an alien, and loves putting them together with two heads.

I'm not sure this toy is educational, per se, but it's provided him with hours of fun already. The refills are reasonably priced, too, considering how long the stuff lasts. Great toy!

Customer Review: Excellent choice over Creepy Crawlers
Summary: 5 Stars

Very impressed w/ this toy. Concept is similar to Creepy Crawlers w/out the hassel of electricity (heat, danger, and time to cook) or odor. Martian Matter is quick, easy, odor free, not messy, and end results/variety is excellent and brightly colored. Each Martian sets firm in just 5 minutes. The clay in which you make an impression mold is soft and fluffy-not hard to manage or crumbly. Three small cans of different colored clay are included-a note states if clay becomes dry you can add drops of water as necessary. You get about 10 half Martian mold pieces which are all "pairable"-any two will make a unique Martian. The amount of liqiud used is very small and you get three 3oz. bottles; enough to make probably 50 or more Martians. The storage unit is an adorable spaceship which cleverly houses everything neat and orderly! There's even 3 clear dome covered seat pods to hold your favorite 3 Martians! Sure to be a huge hit for the 5-10 yr old group!

Customer Review: Great alternative to play dough
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this for my 4 year old based on previous reviews, and I have not regretted it. My son, 2 year old daughter, 3 year old nephew, and various friends and family love playing with this set. It's rather simple, but it has the unique factor going for it. When I saw the goo, I thought it would surely be messy, but it is actually much less clean up than playdough--plus, no need to worry about an ugly glob of mixed up colors because the dough only serves as a mold. My only complaint is that, when the martian matter runs out, it is almost cheaper to buy a whole new set than to purchase replacements. However, the starter kit lasted us quite a while and it is certainly no reason for me to stop buying them as gifts for all of the youngsters we know. I will end with one warning: be prepared to find countless little dehydrated alien carcasses when you least expect it!

Customer Review: Alien Maker is pretty cool but it is NOT plasti goop
Summary: 4 Stars

Alien Maker teaches elementary casting technique. A mold using a play-doh like compound instead of sand is used to make a half cast mold. The plastic compound is cast into the mold and then sealed with a casting cover. After the specified time the molded plastic is removed and the manufactured product is complete. Upside - plastic casting (like metal casting, resin casting, plaster casting, drop forging...) is really cool and is a good tool to teach a child the basics of process and manufacture. My girls love this toy. Downside - plastic compound shelf life is really short. The plastic compound dries out easily if not placed in sealed containers. I'm thinking of picking up the creepy crawlers with plasti-goop to contrast product longevity, durability and general experimental fun. Science and technology are really cool.

Customer Review: Looks Messy, but its not!
Summary: 5 Stars

Bought this toy for my 4 year old son (turned 4 2 months ago). After I read the initial directions and showed him how to do it, he was doing it all by himself within about 3 tries. He is even starting and stopping the kitchen timer by himself.

We live in a high humidity environment (louisiana) so the only thing that isn't quite right in the instructions for us is how long to leave an alien in the meteor mud before it becomes hard. Takes about 10-12minutes for us to get a hard non-gooey alien. Luckily my son isnt interested in gooey aliens to disect yet. He just wants the hard ones to put into the space ship/viewing pod.

Its a LOT less messy than letting him play with normal playdough! Would recommend to any child 4++.
