Toys and Games Reviews of Martian Matter Alien Maker Playset - SpaceshipCustomer Review: Great toy! Summary: 5 Stars
When my son asked for this toy I cringed. We already own the creepy crawlers and I hate it - the heat, the smell, the mess, the millions of parts, yuck! I was so happy to find that this toy is nothing like that! First, as others have stated it holds all the peices neatly inside of and on the spaceship. Second, the "matter" does not smell at all and easily cleans up. Third, there's no need for heat or waiting around for long cooling times.
As an elementary teacher I was really won over by the directions, which are written for kids. My son, who is working on second grade skills, was able to use the directions to assemble the toy on his own. The simple process for making aliens is broken down into 9 steps and each step is accompanied by a clear illustration. Working through these steps was such a great educational experience for him that I might type up something similar for my class at school. It takes 3-5 minutes for your alien to dry so we also got lots of practice telling time.
Basically the process begins by creating a play doe mold using little plastic alien heads and bodies that you can mix and match. You then fill the mold with gel, cover it with some more playdoe and let the gel dry for a few minutes (you can make another alien while you wait), and then peel your new gel alien out of the playdoe mold.
There are so many choices built into this simple process...you get to mix and match the alien mold parts (over 90 combinations), you get to choose colors in both playdoe and gel, you get to choose how hard you want your alien to be (they have gooey guts in 3 minutes and get harder in 5 or more minutes), and you get to decide what you want to do with your alien once he's created (play with it, store it in the spaceship pods built into the toy, let it shrivel up and dry out in the air, dissect it with the tweezers/plastic knife, or smash it with your fist as my son loved to do.
This is such a great toy that I'm going to wait for a sale and then buy a few to give as b-day presents throughout the year.
Customer Review: One of our favorites!! Summary: 5 Stars
My son has more toys than I'd like to admit, but this is one of our favorites. I'd say this is in our top three (and for the price, I'd probably say it's # 1).
My son is 5 and he can create his aliens by himself with absolutely no help from us (this is great for those times where you need to keep your child busy so you can clean, etc).
We showed him how to make the aliens the first time and he picked it up immediately.
We do make him use a towel (or some other protective surface so the gel doesn't get on our carpet). You'll also need a hard surface (we use a hard cover book) for cutting the martians open. When they're cut open, the gel oozes out. When it's dried up (a few minutes), it wipes right off of the back of the book.
If your little one decides to cut the martian open, you can add a little gel and "glue" them back together. (Just let it sit for a few minutes)
I can't find a single fault to this toy. The refills are easy to find and very inexpensive. The toy is small and very easy to store (everything fits on or in the spaceship).
I wish I could give this toy 10 stars.
Customer Review: Good Rainy Day Activity Summary: 3 Stars
Santa brought this toy and it is good for a little while but the kids did get bored fast with it. Also not a toy that you can do anyplace unless you want to go find the mess later so for us have to make sure they use it in kitchen for easy clean up.
One odd problem we have and not sure why but the mud gets so messy in the cracks where you put it to make the alien would think should be a smooth surface but ours has crevices and am not sure why. No matter what we do half the mud sticks really bad in the contraption am getting ready to try to spray it with cooking spray to see if that helps .
Far messier than i thought it would be and though is a little fun for them to create different aliens mine like to make them all the way hard and that just takes so long much longer than the five min it says.
Wish the creatures were bigger to get more play time from them and not just tiny little globs but the kids seem to like it for now.
Only 3 stars because the play value really is not there for our kids so maybe they are just too old or something based on so many others saying how fun it is.
Customer Review: My son's favorite Christmas toy! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this as an afterthought while preparing for Christmas. It was my son's favorite, most played-with gift. He left the toys with bells and whistles on his shelf to play with this, and we've had hours of fun with it.
It's pretty straight-forward. Your child chooses an alien mold from a selection of tops and bottoms, and presses it into the martian mud. The mold is then filled with colored goo, lunar lava, and then more martian mud is placed on top. Within five minutes, you magically have a gooey, brightly colored alien! These can go in the spaceship or can be dissected with the included tweezers.
All in all, a whole lot of fun! The pieces in our set don't go together very well, but for the money it's still far better than I expected. The lid to the spaceship falls off often, as do the mold sections, but it makes the cutest little aliens and my son loves it. We're already looking for lava and mud refills.
For the price, I don't think you could go wrong with this toy!
Customer Review: Creative, Cool and Fun Summary: 5 Stars
This is a fun and cool toy. More creative than play-doh. Even the space ship is well thought out. There is a receptacle for every piece and tool. There are a lot of combinations you can do to create different shapes of aliens. You create the molds by pressing the aliens into the Meteor Mud (seems like a regular play-doh). Then you pour the Lunar lava into the mold. It will take around 5 minutes for the lunar lava to solidify into a gel. Make sure to cover the mold with a rolled flat Meteor Mud or it will not set properly. No heat needed to set. You can also combined different colors to create colorful aliens. Since the mold is made up of play-doh like material, it is very easy to remove the aliens. The stuff are non-toxic. The only warning is if you have allergy from wheat as it contains some wheat. Each bottle of lunar lava is 2 oz. There are several bottles included and you can makes a lot of aliens with them. This is a pretty nice gift for kids 5 years and above.
