Toys and Games Reviews of Martian Matter Alien Maker Playset - SpaceshipCustomer Review: My 5-yr-old's favorite toy ever! Summary: 5 Stars
My son got this as a gift for his 5th birthday. I was skeptical because it looked like it could be messy and there is a warning on the Lunar Lava that it can stain, so I didn't want to use it on a wooden surface. I decided to let him give it a try on our laminate table in the kitchen.
The toy consists of several components: a "spaceship" which serves as a storage unit for all the other pieces and which can be used as a toy for flying around your completed Martians, a rolling pin, a chunky pair of tweezers, a blunt plastic knife, a cookie-cutter-like circle, three containers of Meteor Mud (playdoh-like substance), three bottles of Lunar Lava (the substance that makes the Martians), and 14 mix-and-match half-molds (7 heads and 7 bottoms).
To make a Martian, you first create a mold by using the spaceship, Meteor Mud and two half-molds. This part is pretty cool because the child can come up with numerous different combinations for a complete mold by combining different heads and bottoms. Once the mold is made, you then fill it with Lunar Lava. The child can use one solid color or mix any or all of the three colors that come with this kit. Then you make a "lid" for the mold using more Meteor Mud, the rolling pin and the circular cookie cutter. You seal the lid on the mold and wait 3-5 minutes for the Lunar Lava to cure.
I gave my son our kitchen timer and showed him how to set it for 5 minutes as we found that 3 minutes was really not long enough for the Lunar Lava to properly set up. Once time is up, you peel off the lid and remove the Martian. It's kind of a slimy substance once it sets up, which is perfect Martian material! Because there are three containers of Meteor Mud, you can continue making new molds and more Martians while the first one cures.
Once the Martian is ready, you remove it from the mold and can use the knife and tweezers to cut off any Lunar Lava that may have spilled over the edge of the mold, or you can dissect the Martian -- "blood" (Lunar Lava on the inside that hasn't completely set up yet) oozes out! You can also put the Martians inside the domes on the spaceship and pretend to fly them around. They will eventually dry out if you don't keep them in the domes or other air-tight container. The Meteor Mud can be used over and over and over again and can be used like traditional playdoh in addition to making molds. The Lunar Lava will run out once you've made a whole lot of Martians. If your child uses this toy as often as mine does, it may be worth getting a couple of refills. I do wish they sold JUST Lunar Lava refills because so far I've only found Lunar Lava/Meteor Mud combo refills and we really don't need more Meteor Mud.
A couple of tips: The Lunar Lava bottles come with attached lids. Cut off the part that attaches the lid to the bottle because it really gets in the way when trying to fill the molds. Also, get a timer ready so you can accurately gauge how long it will take for the Lunar Lava to cure. It really would be nice if the toy came with its own hourglass-like timer but we made do by using our own digital kitchen timer.
This toy helps foster creativity and is great for developing fine motor skills and finger strength. My 7-yr-old daughter has also really enjoyed playing with it and it has actually worked well for both kids to play at the same time because they can each be making their own Martian without getting in each other's way.
There is a little bit of clean-up involved, but no more so than regular playdoh. I've found that if you let the Meteor Mud or Lunar Lava completely dry (even on clothes) it easily crumbles and cleans up much more easily than trying to wipe it up when it's still wet.
All-in-all, I am completely thrilled with this toy! Anything that holds my son's attention for more than ten minutes is a winner in this house and he has spent hours with this one!
