Toys and Games Reviews of Jetfire - Transformers Voyager Classic

Customer Review: The most detailed Classics Tranformers figure.
Summary: 5 Stars

Classics Jetfire is a masterpiece! This toy is the single most details and accessoried figure from this toyline.

The vehicle mode for this figure is superb, it is highly detailed and looks very similar to the cartoon character (also called SkyFire). The vehicle mode has foldout wheels, opening cockpit and the iconic red jetboosters that are this chaactgers distiguishing mark. The characters guns fit neatly into the wings and the characters removeable helmet fits neatly into the fuselage (still on the robots head) with the antennae from the helmet forming seconday guns.

In Robot mode this toy is much more poseable than the original, infact the poseablility of this toy is amazing and it is proably the most poseable figure from the classics line. The figure wears a removeable helmet, which is a nice accessory, he also has 2 arm mounted missile launchers as well as two hand-held guns that can be combined into one larger gun. His jetboosters convert into two shoulder mounted cannons. This character is practically bristling with weapons. When in robot mode the wings fold up (and look a little butterflyish) but stay completely out of the way of the arms which is nice (and not always guaranteed with transformers toys) and the feet, which are formed from the jet engines exhaust cones, provide a stable footing for the figure allowing you to pose it with a good chance it will stay upright.

All in all this toy is almost TOO GOOD to be a Transformers Classics line toy. In a line of toys notable for their quality this one sets a very high bar.

Highly recommended!

Customer Review: An interesting compromise
Summary: 4 Stars

I was given the original Jetfire as a present around 1985, and I can remember being very confused when watching the Transformers television show because Jetfire was called "Skyfire" and although the coloring was the same, the overall design was definitely different. Was he the same guy? If not, where was the Skyfire toy, and why didn't Jetfire appear in the TV show?

I did not discover until about 15 years later that this had something to do with licensing. The original Jetfire toy was not based on the Transformers toy line at all, but some bizarre cross-marketing scheme that somehow ended in a Veritech fighter from Macross/Robotech getting an Autobot symbol slapped onto it. Evidently Hasbro/Takara were able to procure the rights to produce the toy, but not to include its image in the TV show.

The cool thing about this "Classic" transformer is that its design no longer resembles the original Jetfire/Veritech design, but the Skyfire design that appeared in the Transformers TV show. They would have been better off calling this Skyfire, but were probably banking on the popularity of the original toy to help sell more units than memories of the TV show...Or there's some other bizarre licensing thing behind the scenes.

Definitely a good piece of TF history to own for any collector.

Customer Review: One of the more exciting transformers of this line
Summary: 4 Stars

I loved this toy incarnation of Jetfire. It's easy enough to transform and I could even go for a "Gerwalk" mode where he is in plane mode but his arms and legs are sticking out, reminiscent of the Macross Valkyries/Veritechs. I wish, though, that his legs could bend forward for this mode. The detachable helmet is cool, revealing a face that looks a lot like the one in the original cartoon. Playability is high and he looks pretty durable.

On the downside, his articualtions could have been better. I wish the legs rotated above the knee (Like Optimus Prime and Megatron) instead of below the knee for better posability. Sometimes, I'd pose him and he ends up looking knock-kneed. the same with the elbows, I wish his arms roatated above the elbows. but I do appreciate the rotatability of the forearms and hands. The packaging was a chore to open, as I'm not the kind of guy who'd just rip the package apart. Too many wire bindings. The joints are also a little tight, making me afraid I'd break it if I exerted too much pressure.

Overall, one of the better transformers of this line. I wish Hasbro would translate more of the generation 1 characters into this type.

Customer Review: The BEST of Transformers Classics Voyager
Summary: 4 Stars

Known as Skyfire in the original cartoon series, and updated to Jetfire in later incarnations, this character has been given what is possibly the best redesign to date! The original was clearly based on the Macross Veritech fighter, and whilst this figure is different, there are some clear homages to the Veritech, including the jet legs, the helmet with four cannons, as well as the massive booster pack.

Jetfire has clean lines and a very nice appearance in plane mode, with reasonable handling of robot 'kibble' at the bottom. Granted the hands are visible without the guns attached, but this is minor gripe. With firing missiles, extendable wheels, flipping dorsal cannons, as well as rotating cockpit guns; there's plenty of play value as it is!

The transformation is quite simple (which is all it needs to be) into a neatly poseable robot mode that looks equally great. The removeable helmet is a great touch, revealing a more conventional face behind the masked figure.

Overall, this is a fantastic figure,[...]. Far as I can see, it's a toss-up between Jetfire & Starscream as to which is the best figure in the whole Classics line-up.

Customer Review: jetfire/skyfire
Summary: 4 Stars

this is a very good transformer. i remember the scarcity of the original, and how cool he was... the liscensing troubles explained in another reveiw fit, now- but at the time (when i was 12 or so) it just made him mysterious...

i was thrilled when my GF grabbed this one for me, and as with almost all of this generation of transformers, the engineering and complexity is impressive.

my big let-down, and reason for the loss of a star, is that he doesn't transform into the macross mech-style jet body with arms and legs.

it's hard to describe that mode, but those who know what i'm talking about (half jet on top, robot arms and legs below) will be dissapointed that the mode is not available.

but, it is a nice toy that looks great in both modes and has a lot of articulation. it's just that it would appeal mostly to the old-school collectors, and the lack of that in-between mode will bug those same people.
