Toys and Games Reviews of I-Dog Dance WhiteCustomer Review: Until the real thing comes along. Summary: 5 Stars
Seeing some of the previous reviews that are unstinting in their praise makes me less confident in my own reaction. I received the item as a "gag gift" and let it sit several months until some occasion would motivate me to use it. The excuse arrived in the form of a 3-year-old granddaughter, but the dog turned out to be late to the party. Rarely have I seen a gadget as tightly packaged as this one, but after finding the right tools we coaxed it out of its box, no harm done. But now we had a dead hunk of plastic on our hands, despite following every instruction except the last--installing 3 AA batteries should it be necessary (it comes with batteries and a low-power indicator). After finding the right Phillips, I was able to remove the battery compartment lid (2 screws) and the problem was immediately apparent. By the smallest of margins, one of the batteries had become dislodged and was not making contact with the circuit. Nevertheless, I disposed of the included batteries and reloaded with fresh alkalines. Now the thing started to yap it up.
It was sufficient to keep my granddaughter and me entertained for 15 minutes, and hardly anything either of us might use as an iPod speaker. Clever engineering. And who knows, there may be a level of personality inside this reluctant pooch that simply requires more time (and properly installed batteries) to discover.
[Later: Now that I don't feel the pressure of keeping granddaughter in high spirits at all times, I'm feeling much more charitable to I-Dog. As an external speaker, he performs more adequately than some prosaic units I've owned (decent treble, somewhat canned mid-range, non-existent bass)--but the point is that the sound is good enough to keep I-Dog in good spirits, flashing his many moods and occasionally sitting up and/or beating his paw in perfect time to the beat (he especially loves Sinatra and hops around on his hind legs when I play Getz). He's not exceptionally animated, but then I have yet to feed him Miles and Coltrane. Come to think of it, I may be feeding him too much high culture. Elvis' "You Ain't Nothing But a Hound Dog" might be more to this lazy mutt's liking. If that doesn't work, we'll try Patti Page and "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?" (frankly, I wouldn't pay all that much, but make me an offer). On the other hand, I may be underestimating him. It may take Sun Ra or Thelonious Monk to get him really heated up.)
[I've decided to raise I-Dog from 3 to 5 stars. When's the last time you listened not merely "to" but "with" the speaker playing music, a speaker moreover that shares your tastes and is not afraid to express the joy you knew before you learned to suppress it.]
Description of I-Dog Dance WhiteMeet I-DOG -- the little dog with BIG sound! Just plug him in to your music player and I-DOG plays your music through his built-in speaker or your headphones -- and rocks out! Wanna dance with I-DOG? Try placing him near a speaker, then press his nose and watch him dance along as he grooves to the beat. I-DOG even changes his mood to suit your music. Simply play something new and I-DOG entertains you with expressive movements and flashing LED lights that change color! The music-lovin' mutt is even "trained" to obey eight commands, including "Dance!", "Stay!", and "Tap paw!" - just touch his face! As he dances to your favorite tunes, watch his ears move and groove. He'll even stand up and do the I-DOG twist! Once the music starts, this perky pooch becomes a dancin' machine! The cute little i-Dog Dance loves to boogie--and he makes a great companion for music fans ages 8 and up who want to add a little fun to their day. The i-Dog Dance creates a multi-colored light show for music that you "feed" it and dances along with a variety of groovin' moves. He's also trained to perform several different commands, including "dance, "tap paw," and more. Like any dog, he gets a little miffed when you don't pay attention to him and will remind you to feed him more music by making barking noises and flashing his lights. | What We Think Fun Factor:

i-Dog is always ready to bust a move. View Larger. | No Assembly Required for i-Dog to Get His Groove On The i-Dog Dance requires no assembly and is ready to use right out of the box. Simply press the button on i-Dog's nose and he'll tell you what "mood" he's in through a series of noises and light displays. The clever, compact design features a jack on his hind leg where you can plug in a personal music player using the included connector cord. As the music plays through i-Dog's speaker, he'll do a custom light show, and occasionally dance along. The little speakers on i-Dog get plenty loud, but you can quickly mute them by touching i-Dog's multi-functional tail (which also puts him into "quiet" mode if he's getting on your nerves.) The inconspicuous microphone on his shoulder also allows him to perform along with music that's played through nearby speakers. Besides dancing and flashing his lights while listening to music, the dog also responds to a variety of commands. These commands are all described in the helpful instruction booklet. Plugged or Unplugged, i-Dog is a Dancin' Fool The design of the i-Dog Dance makes it a standout. It's both sleek and contemporary while still remaining cute and charming. The multi-colored light shows are fun, as are the dog's movements--especially when he moves his ears up and down and dances on his back legs (which you can make him do by running your finger across his face). His versatility is also a nice feature --when you don't feel like plugging a personal music player in to i-Dog, simply put him next to your stereo and watch him perform! Fun Personality, User-Friendly Design We especially liked how i-Dog has a personality and reminds you of his presence when you haven't paid attention to him in a while. (It's easy enough to turn him off if he's annoying you). The device also functions as a compact easy-to-use speaker system for your personal music player--handy for a desk or a kitchen table. Theoretically you can control the volume of i-Dog's speakers by running your finger up and down his face, but that feature didn't work so well for us. Most likely, however, your personal music player will be sitting nearby, and you can easily control the volume directly from it. This minor flaw didn't prevent us from enjoying i-Dog and his antics, and appreciating the clever, user-friendly design that's sure to appeal to dog-lovers and music-lovers alike.
