Toys and Games Reviews of Hungry Hungry Hippos

Customer Review: Cheap, Flimsy, & Poorly Made
Summary: 1 Stars

This cheap knock-off is nothing like the great game you grew up with. The pieces are flimsy, you have to take the whole thing apart just to store it in the box, the levers constantly stick, and even the marbles do not have the same weight they used to have. My son lost interest almost immediately; the old game was much more durable and you could bang the heck out of it and it would not break. With this model, if you push too hard the hippos just fall off the base and you have to constantly keep re-assembling it. If you want your child to play this game and enjoy it, [...]. If you are new to this toy, keep looking. Don't waste your money (17.00!!!) on this lousy piece of junk.

Customer Review: Not the Same
Summary: 4 Stars

I ordered this game because as a child I enjoyed it and thought my daughter would too. The game is in pieces and is difficult for her to put together without help. The pieces have a tendency to come off too if not put on securely. The box is very flimsy and doesn't hold up well. When putting it back in the box we have yet to get it in so the lid will close all the way. There also is a problem with the hippos getting stuck and it's tough to get them going again. I never had any of these problems as mine was a one piece board and it fit in its sturdy box. Eventhough my daughter finds the game great fun when it works I don't think I would buy another one.

Customer Review: So far so good.
Summary: 4 Stars

My daughter really wanted this game, and at the time it was really hard to find in stores. I read the reviews from others saying that it isn't as durable as the older version, and I am sure it isn't. It has removable hippos, for easier storage. I just keep mine together to reduce the risk of breaking it, and together it doesn't fit back into the box. It does get marbles trapped in the hippos necks. You have to either flip the game board over, or pop the hippo off to get them out. This normally happens when one hippo gets the majority of the marbles, and they have to go somewhere. But if you have a little patience, this can be a very great game.

Customer Review: Fun but fragile
Summary: 2 Stars

We bought 2 of these games for our grandsons recently. It is intense to set up/put together to play only to have to completely tear it back apart to store in the box when done playing. Plus, both games fell apart almost immediately. The construction of the game needs for the players to play gently and yet that is not what the game requires to play. Sadly, the "marbles" aren't even marbles anymore but round pieces of plastic. This game, as made today, is nothing like we had 20 years ago. Our children had fun with this game back in the 80's. Sadly because of poor construction, our grandchildren were not able to enjoy for very long at all.

Customer Review: cheap plastic, jammed hippos, irate customer
Summary: 1 Stars

I agree with the other reviews that state that this game is made of cheap plastic and joints that cause the hippos to jam, the "marbles" to fly, and the tears to fall. Come on MB - you know the kids are going to hit those levers hard - that was the funnest part of the game when we were kids. This version actually has negative economic value to us and I would not only think twice before buying another MB game, but I will insist on opening the packaging to see the quality (or lack thereof) before buying it. So not cool MB. Not only did you ruin it for my 4 year old, but you betrayed one of my memories and thus any affinity for your products.
