Toys and Games Reviews of Hungry Hungry Hippos

Customer Review: Very Cheaply Made
Summary: 2 Stars

We have the same complaints as others... this game is sooooo cheaply made, especially for the price!! The marbles are light plastic and seamed -- they don't roll as well as they could. The hippos detach sometimes during play, one seems to not want to ever be attached. The levers get stuck sometimes, sometimes the balls get stuck in their throats. It is all very Flimsy. Trying to store it again is a joke.

That said, my kids still like it. It is unbelievably NOISY, and I think that's what they like, plus it's very fast paced. I would never play it with a very competitive child, they would drive you nuts complaining about how their hippo wasn't working right or whatever. The best part is flipping the balls into play with the springy thing, they pop really high.

We play on a carpeted floor, so the board doesn't move as much and stray balls don't get away too badly.

Customer Review: zany and endless fun for young kids
Summary: 5 Stars

The nice thing about the hungry hippo game is that you don't even have to say that anyone "wins" or not -- I tell my daughter that her hippos must have been REALLY hungry if they eat more marbles than my hippos. This game works best if all 4 hippos are in action gobbling marbles (or else the marbles get stuck), but two people can easily operate two hippos, even young children. The hardest part about this game were the assembly directions of how to insert the cheap plastic marble flippers. It only takes two seconds once you figure it out, but be sure to just look at the picture on the box, not the damned directions which make it sound like a real production.

The game itself is easy to play, makes a good amount of noise (as the hippo heads knock the plastic) and entertains for long periods of time. It's a silly game, but it does promote counting marbles to see who wins.

Customer Review: Fun, but won't last
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this game for my five-year-old for Christmas because I enjoyed it as a child and because they were out of Moon Sand! The game comes in pieces -- the square base, the four hippo bodies and four hippo heads. When you put it together, it doesn't fit in the box. The instructions suggest taking the hippos off for storage. They have a picture of how to arrange it, but it doesn't fit in the box that way. You can tell on the picture the pieces are hanging over the edge. So you have to take at least one hippo head off to make it all fit. Putting it together isn't too much trouble but the pieces are evetually going to wear out and not snap together. I don't expect this toy to make it until next Christmas unless we find a place to store it out of the box.

The game is really fun, parents will even enjoy playing it with the kids. Just don't expect it last forever.

Customer Review: cheaply made
Summary: 5 Stars

This would be a great game (as it was in the past) if it wasnt so cheaply made.

-the hippos come off while you are playing sending all the marbles onto the floor
-the hippos "jam" ..one jams so often you cant use it. One of them doesnt lift up his mouth... he just sticks his head out, so you cant use him either.
-The marbles go all over when children play it, if you arent there to collect them then they'll be lost.

The most fun I ever had playing with the game was when my daughter wasn't there and I played it with a friend(23).
The "trigger" you push to send the marbles into play can launch them about 4 feet through the air when you hit them hard enough!!
..that might be a bad thing though if your kids are strong enough to do that.. we about took each other's eye out and we lost a few marbles. tons of fun though.. much better than the actual game.

Customer Review: Our 3 year old LOVES this game!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I agree with the other reviews in that this toy does not have the durability that it did years ago, yet almost every re-make has fallen victim to the "cheap plastic" sign of the times. My solution is to make sure that the toys are picked up and put away after each play time.

Now for the really important part of this review...Our 3 year old (well actually closer to 4) absolutely loves this game! We play it constantly. It is easy for him to understand and manipulate. The set-up and break-down is relatively simple and it is does fit back into it's square box! Our 7 year old has fun playing this too. It has been well worth the money for the amount of active play time it receives in our home. I would recommend this game for parents who are looking for a good first game with their very young. It is a good introduction to friendly competition!
