Toys and Games Reviews of Hi Ho Cherry-OCustomer Review: upsets my daughter Summary: 1 Stars
At first glance my daughter seemed quite intrigued by the little fruity pieces. In the meantime, I was just wondering silently how long it would take for us to lose a few of the tiny things, whereas if we did, we'd have to throw the whole game away. Anyway, that was our first impression.
As we started the game, I found it very annoying to have to load all the little fruit pieces onto the board, 40 in all. 40 pieces tinier than a marble. And if you take your basket out of the hole, the little fruit pieces will roll into the hole where the basket was and to retrieve it you have to disrupt the entire board and put back all 40 pieces again. That is of course worst case, but it did (and WILL) happen, and was annoying.
You spin the spinner and if it lands on a number, you take that many fruits off your tree. If the spinner lands on the dog or bird you give back 2, and if it lands on the spilled basket, you give back everything in your basket.
There is a little over a 40% chance that the spinner will land you on one of the spaces where you need to give back your fruits. My poor daughter, through hard luck, kept landing on either the number 1, the dog, or the bird. So whatever little she got, she would have to keep putting it back.
This game bored me to tears and worst of all it made my daughter very sad. She did not have a fit but she just had a really sad face every time the spinner landed on the dog or bird. This game is pure luck, so there was no way to exercise her mind except for counting up to 4 fruits or taking away 2 of them.
Would not recommend. NOT FUN AT ALL. Lots of better games out there.
Customer Review: FUN, fun! But be prepared to replace the cherries! Summary: 4 Stars
This is a GREAT game! I replayed this a few weeks ago with my now 9-year-old, and we still loved it.
Of course, the reason we hadn't played in years is because some of the cherries were missing. I bought another set secondhand from Value Village, not for the board, but just for extra cherries ((...) it beat sending away to the manufacturer for them, and who cares if they're used?!?). They are also a choking hazard for little little kids, so they must be put away carefully for both reasons.
This is a great first counting game, as other reviewers have said. BUT it's also a nice "easy" game with older children who don't want something grownup and complicated but who are sick of playing "Go Fish." :-))
Also, you'll find that it's a game that several family members can play even if their ages range widely. A nice game to bring together much older & younger siblings, for instance, as long as the older ones are a little tolerant of younger kids' rule-bending ("let's not put all the cherries back on the tree this time," or "that wasn't really a dog - the spinner landed on the line").
In general, it's nice and durable, even though the base is just box cardboard. The spinner can definitely survive years of abuse and all the plastic parts are simple and well-built to last.
In general, this is a great game to have around. No bells or whistles, and it may never become your favourite, but it's a classic on any family game shelf!
Playability on Shabbat: YES!!! (no batteries, electronics or writing)
Customer Review: Poor Quality Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this item based on the other reviews which were mainly positive.
I don't recall seeing any of the negative reviews mention the quality of the game but given the number of reviews I might have missed something.
First the good thing:
This game requires counting and therefore has the potential to make gaining basic mathematical skills effortless...given that the players are having fun.
My problems with the game are:
1. Fruits too small and really look edible even to a 3 year old.
2. Fruits roll all over the place when we attempt too play and so are likely to get lost soon. They sent an extra piece of each fruit but what if 2 pieces go missing? Again because they are so small they might not be easily found.
3. The cardboard base that holds the baskets is a little flimsy and doesn't look like it will hold up to heavy use at all...especially not by a 3 and 4 year old.
4. The toy gives the overall impression of being cheaply made with these little plastic parts that look very flimsy and not designed for heavy use by small children
I do not wish to sound scornful of the "Made in China" label but I get a 'cheap toy' feeling from it.
Anyway glad it was so cheap. Would not purchase again or recommend in its present form.
Customer Review: The same game I grew up with Summary: 5 Stars
Although the pictures are a little bit updated, this is basically the same game I grew up with and loved. I bought it for my niece and it took her no time at all to learn to play it. IT's easy to play and can be as educational as you make it. I look for toys that are fairly quiet, easy to play and fun. I also look for toys that can grow with the child and if they are educational then that is a boost. Games are a lot of fun. Children seem to love mastering them. I think they also offer good lessons in taking turns, winning with grace, and losing with grace. (all life skills we need right?) This game can be made more educational with some parental input- three cheries minus/take away two leaves how many? two plus three cheries equals what? Let's count them together... etc. Although my son didn't quiet grasp the concept of the numbers yet, (at age two) he enjoyed spinning the spinner and putting cheries on the tree. Thanks to my niece for her patience. Enjoy!
Customer Review: Buy this game!! Summary: 5 Stars
My 2.5 year old LOVES to play games. She is very good about taking turns, and is crazy for games. However, it's hard to find a good, simple, straight forward game for this age group. Most of them have incredibly complicated rules. This game is great. Of course, my daughter loves to count, so counting the cherries is great fun for her. She also loves to spin the spinner and she loves to say "Oh no" when you have to put the cherries back. It's a game that will last for many years. Her brother who is 19 remembers this game and will actually play it with her (sometimes).
The best things: No batteries, no complicated rules, doesn't take up a lot of room like some games (with big boxes), older kids will play with younger kids, parents enjoy it, and I guess I should add that it is educational too. But most importantly it's just fun.
The worst thing: No extra cherries. We have lost a couple so we can only play with 3 people, but that's fine.
