Toys and Games Reviews of Hasbro The Game of Life - Simpsons Edition

Customer Review: LOVE the Simpsons, but this is cheap & poorly constructed
Summary: 2 Stars

Let me start off by saying that I adore the Simpsons, and I just love playing Life, so I was thrilled to get this game for Christmas. When it came time to play it, however, I was deeply disappointed. Maybe I am spoiled because I have one of the great old Life boards, but this game is super flimsy. The buildings don't fit in the slots on the board right and come out while you are trying to play and even the spinner seems like it's going to come off when you spin it (it did once while we played it) and it doesn't spin smoothly. In the old game of Life, when you are done you can just fold up the board and put it away. In this version, you have to take the whole thing apart- all the buildings, bridges, the spinner and all to make it fit in the box, then reassemble it when you want to play again (which in my case, probably won't happen).

The rules are a little different, and not quite as fun, but I do have to say that some of the cards and spaces are pretty funny, which is it's saving grace. It was a great idea, just not executed very well. I would only recommend this to diehard Simpson's memorabilia fans, just not anyone who actually wants to play the game.

Customer Review: An enduring classic... but so cheaply made!
Summary: 2 Stars

I played this game in the 1970s, and had the chance to play it again with my niece and nephew recently (2005). The conversion of the game to a Simpsons theme is quite good, plenty of relevant references. The game play remains pretty good, although there have been a few changes since the '70s.

The reason this only gets two stars, however, is the terrible design. What happened? It used to be that the spinner action was smooth and cool, with a 'zzzzz' sound. Now it's just a disc of spinning plastic that is really unsatisfying. Also, the buildings used to snap in, and you could fold the game and place it into its box. Now, the numerous buildings and bridges all must be removed in order to store the game in the box, which means you have to re-construct the game every time you want to play. What a terrible hassle! These two details change what had been a classic and made it into an also-ran.

For the price stated (stated retail price of about $21), you should expect these details to be taken care of.

Customer Review: Incredibly fun... must-have for any Simpsons' fan!
Summary: 4 Stars

I love this Simpsons edition of the Life board game. It is hilarious and includes many small fun facs or direct quotes that a diehard fan like me remembers from the series. The first time I played it with my two smaller siblings, I couldn't stop laughing all through the game.
As far as the gameplay goes, there are many nuances like buying a house, getting a job (depending on your level of education,) buying insurance for your car and/or house, all with humorous names (like Otto Insurance.) True Simpsons fans will understand this pun.
The durability of this game is great! There is nothing to break in it. The tokens are plastic cars which couldn't be broken short of a direct nuclear missile hit and the game board includes plastic houses (like Springfield Elementary School, the powerplant, Burns' Manor, etc.) and only the money is likely to be crumpled during gameplay (especially with my kids.)
Overall it's a GREAT game and I recommend it very much.

Customer Review: For the simpson's fan, an excellent adaptation of the original game
Summary: 5 Stars

As a huge simpson's fan, this game was an excellent adaptation of one of my favorite games as a kid. It's life, Simpsons style. Funny qwips and quotes from the show, and situations that make you laugh. As with many games, the quality of the board and pieces has declined since I was a kid, the cars made of metal, the people pegs fitting properly, and the Board not popping apart all the time (the hills and houses tend to pop out of place if the board is bumped). As far as the educational component of this game, well, not that it's simpson, unless you want your kid to know pop culture trivia, then this game has lost some of that value. But as far as us Big Kids, this is a good party game for us to laugh it up some with a classic from our childhood. I love the situations, and it just make for a few hours of fun. Enjoy.

Customer Review: Do NOT pay full price!
Summary: 2 Stars

I feel like I always get a lot out of the games I buy b/c we MAKE them fun even if they are duds. We alter the rules to suit us. For ex, we often make a kid and teen/adult team so the little ones can play along too.
This game is very cheaply made. (95% of Simpson products are the same. Those Krusty product jokes must be based on the real Simpsons merchandise.)It takes a long time to set up and disassemble the plastic pieces for each game. Your token is still the classic Life car with the colored pegs. Come'on, couldn't they have done better?
Life is a bit of difficult game b/c it's harder for children to understand and by the time they do, they probably won't want to play. Adults are unlikely to enjoy the novelty of bills, etc b/c that's their everyday life.
