Toys and Games Reviews of Hasbro Playskool Lullaby Gloworm

Customer Review: Soothes the colicky baby
Summary: 5 Stars

I would give this toy 5 stars for calming effect, rather than for fun, but that's not the way the ratings are set up. When nothing else will settle our colicky 2-1/2 month old son, we put him in his sling, and, while gently swaying and bouncing, we hold the Gloworm up by his face and push the button over and over again. He settles down and stares at its warm, happy face, listening to the (to me tinny & unpleasant) lullabies, and usually falls sound asleep in less than 5 minutes. (Subjected to this very mild usage, it's a very durable toy. I don't know how it would hold up to mishandling by a toddler.) Adults may not like the music, but when you're desperate to comfort your child, your tastes become irrelevant. If you really can't stand it, consider the silent Fisher-Price Baby Mickey Huglight (there's a musical version as well, the Baby Mickey Musical Huglight). Nice to look at, but no soothing music (soothing for the baby, not for the parent). There's also the Mattel Soothing Star Pooh which has a switch to turn off the music altogether. Its music is quieter and includes pleasant "nature sounds" in the background, but I find its light to be a bit too harsh & bright to shine into my son's face. That extra brightness might be more reassuring to a frightened toddler who awakes alone in the dark.

Customer Review: Helped my son through a Cat Scan without sedation!
Summary: 5 Stars

We got "Glowy" for our son when he was 3 months old to try and help him sleep better. It has always been a very soothing toy for him, and even now, at 12 months old, our son always smiles lovingly at it when I press its tummy to make the face light up and the lullaby music come on. Whenever he's upset, all I have to do is hold "Glowy" in front of his face, and he instantly calms down. Recently, our son had to have a Cat Scan, and even though the scan itself only takes 5 minutes to complete, they have to sedate most babies because you can't move an inch or it messes up the scan. The nurse suggested we try it first without sedation, and I was really thinking we would have to have him sedated as he is a very very active baby! Once he was laying down, and they had put the blankets over him, I could tell he was scared, so I took out Glowy and held it in front of his face and he didn't move an inch the whole time the scan was taking place!! I would highly recommend this toy for any babies that are fussy or need an early "lovey". I plan on passing this one down to our next babies.

Customer Review: Cute.
Summary: 4 Stars

My six month old son cries a lot and sometimes his "glowy" is the only thing that will get him to stop. I know from reading other reviews some people find it too loud. I like the fact that it is loud. When my son is crying and i'm trying to calm him, he can hear his gloWorm over his crying. The only reason I give it four stars and not five is because of the fact that it is so easy to start, you barely even have to touch it and it starts playing music. This feature is good for an infant learning, but not good if he ever wanted to sleep with it. Several times when I have just gotten my son to sleep I have picked up the gloworm and he starts playing music and wakes my son up. There is a switch on the battery pack to turn off the music so it just lights up, but I know not all of them have this feature. My son really loves this toy. He likes to watch it light up and he likes the music that it plays. It is worth the price and every child needs a gloworm! :)

Customer Review: Glo-ee - We Love It!
Summary: 4 Stars

My daughter loves the Gloworm. I like the fact that it is small enough for my 11 month old to hold herself. It seems smaller than the older Gloworm that I remember. Sadie loves the light and the music. She has finally figured out how to turn the music on by herself. It is so cute to see her get so excited when Glo-ee shows up. She hugs the doll so tightly.

It is nice that the toy has different switches - one for the light by itself and one for both lights and music. I wish there was just an on/off switch because, when the batteries start running out, the worm makes weird sounds!

I also like the fact that the inside mechanism can be removed and the doll itself can be washed - even in the machine, which I consider a bonus.

My only criticism would be that the toy is very draining on batteries. We are on our third set in less than a month, and that includes cheap as well as expensive batteries.

Customer Review: Just like my old gloworm
Summary: 4 Stars

Both of children got gloworms as gifts when my brother came to visit in the hospital. I was so shocked to see a gloworm. I knew that we both had one in the early 80's. And i dont know that i have seen them since.
When we brought them home from the hospital we would put the worms in their pack n plays with them. We would put the soft music and light on for them and it seemed to work good. Then when we moved them into their cribs. We tried to use the gloworm to get them to sleep but it wasnt working as good anymore. We actualy used something else that played diffrent music that put them to sleep. But we still used the gloworms. Instead of playing all the songs, we switched it to demo and it played just a few lines of the songs but yet stayed lit. They are now able to make the worm light up on their own and have switched it off the demo version. They are soft, cute and just the way i remember them, with a few extra featuers.
