Toys and Games Reviews of Hasbro Elefun

Customer Review: Exciting Game!
Summary: 4 Stars

I got this out for playgroup the other day and the kids had a blast with it. You turn it on the trunk goes up every child gets a net and when the air blows the butterflies come flying out...The kids practically fall over each other trying to catch the butterflies. Not a game I would try to let younger children play with older children for that reason. The little ones might get hurt. I let the 2yrs and up group play it. The only complaint I would have is I wish the on/off switch was not a switch and was button instead so the younger 2-3yr olds can start it and stop it as they wish. The trunk is also difficult to screw on and off because the game is so quick an adult has to sit there turn it off take the trunk off let the kids put the butterflys back in, screw the trunk back on straighten the trunk and turn it back on just so you can do it all over again in 5secs. I would prefer it were more child friendly so the kids can do that themselves.

Customer Review: This toy is a hit.

I have a 4 year old and 1 year old and they love this toy. Cheap batteries don't last in this toy, you need the super high quality ones. As for butterflies not coming out, it works just fine with new batteries. You may have to bend the wings out a bit. They come folded in one direction, just flip them the other way, so they open up and look more like butterflies. The trunk stays up if you bring it up manually after turning it on and it will stay up even after turning it off. Don't use it on soft carpet because the unit will not turn on that way. You can solve that problem by placing a book underneath, though. My only recommendation is that they include more butterflies.

UPDATE:

My oldest is now 8. The kids still enjoy this toy at the grandparents' house. It has lastes many years and both my children and my niece and nephew enjoy it. The trunk is getting worn but I'd say we've gotten our money's worth.

Customer Review: not as fun as it sounds
Summary: 2 Stars

I think the idea of this toy is great. There are multiple problems, however. First of all, be prepared to spend a lot of money on batteries, because it uses them up incredibly quick. Second, the fun to work ratio is about 10 seconds to three minutes. The butterflies fly out so quick that you'll find yourself setting it up again before you even realized that it had started. Also, my kids are 5 and 3 and very rarely were they able to actually catch a butterfly in their net. Third, it seems to have a design flaw in that I had to trim the trunk by about 30% in order for the motor to have enough strength to shoot all the butterflies out. Fourth, the nets themselves are very cheaply made and had to be "fixed" way too many times. Overall, I would say this toy was a little bit of fun, a whole lot of work, and way too much money wasted. We received ours as a Christmas present in 2003, and it's going out with the trash this week, November 2004.

Customer Review: Better than I thought it would be...
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading some of the reviews here on Amazon about Elefun- The Butterfly Catching Game! I was leary of purchasing it. My daughter had her heart set on it for Christmas so I caved in and boy, am I glad I did! It has been nothing but fun! Set up was a breeze, and I followed someone's recommendation of snipping a few inches off the trunk right off the get-go. True to word, the butterflies started flying and my 3 year old was thrilled! She caught quite a few just holding the net by the elephant trunk, and later progressed to trying to catch them in the net. The plastic seems somewhat flimsy, but other components seem sturdy and long wearing. After a few runs, my daughter was able to open the elephant and replace the butterflies herself for the next round. The motor is quiet, just powerful enough to push out the butterflies and construction seems safe. I would highly recommend this game for any active preschooler who has winter blues!

Customer Review: For 4 year olds and up
Summary: 4 Stars

I don't believe the age on the box is appropriate. Three is probably a little young for this game because it takes excellent hand-eye coordination that young threes just haven't fully developed yet. I'm sure my 3 year-old will enjoy it a lot more once he's got better control. You catch the "butterflies" with one of 4 nets that are provided. The butterflies "fly" up and out the elephant's trunk by the force of a battery operated fan. So far, this has been the most intriguing part for my mechanically minded boy. Also, all the butterflies do not always come out of the trunk, I guess the fan just doesn't provide enough wind for all of them to make it all the time. When he is a little better able to master this skill I think it will be an excellent game to play inside on a winter day. (You wouldn't want to play outside because the butterflies might get lost, etc...) I hope it will provide some good fun when it's too cold to go out.
