Toys and Games Reviews of Hasbro ElefunCustomer Review: what a bust!! Summary: 1 Stars
I, like so many reviewers, was baffled and frustrated by how veeeerrrry slowly the butterflies exited the trunk, so I cut off about 6 inches of trunk. Also, 1/3 of the butterflies consistantly got trapped inside, so I cut two paper plates in half and made a direct tunnel for the butterflies to come out of since they were getting stuck on all the nooks and crannies inside. This helped considerably, but presented a new problem. Now the butterflies are out in under 10 seconds. And you have to stand right up next to the trunk to even hope to catch any, as they fall quickly to the ground. I had to sit on the floor to hope to catch any, and forget my 3.5 year old actually being able to catch any they fall so fast.
So, 30 seconds to reset, and 10 seconds of play. How ridiculous! Could stand about 3X the number of butterflies, and made out a lighter fabric [perhaps even the same fabric as the nets] so they'd actually stay airbourne for a second or 2 and the children the game is made for [3-6 years old] could actually catch some.
I'll most likely buy some light mesh fabric, and make my own butterflies, since my son so wants to play this dud of a game.-- He loves elephants.
Customer Review: Not much fun for kids or adults Summary: 1 Stars
My 5 year-old daughter wanted this toy badly after seeing it advertised on television and spent her own money to buy it. She was thrilled the first time she played it, but this excitement was short lived because before too long this toy barely functioned at all. The butterflies get hung up in the trunk, and yes you can tap it to free some of them, but expect to do this repeatedly (how much fun is that?) We also found that after only a few games the butterflies would hardly come out at all - few and far between. Thinking that the supposedly new batteries we put in were perhaps not so new, we started over - again with new batteries. Same thing - batteries were quickly so weak that the butterflies could not be propelled out of the elephants trunk. I called the company about this toy's poor performance and they kindly sent me another, citing that the one I bought must be defective. Guess what? Replacement they sent me was absolutely no better than the first. This toy was quicky donated to charity but my child was still out $20. Don't say you haven't been warned.
Customer Review: Decent fun Summary: 4 Stars
Just wanted to note our experience. When we first got this game, I did have to take each butterfly and gently pop the wings backwards so they would stay open better. Once I did this, every single butterfly flew just fine, all the way out of the trunk. They just needed some fluffing. I've also heard of people taping the button on the bottom down for more fan power, but we haven't had to do this. We've played with this for several hours since we got it for Christmas with no significant battery drain, but then we also used quality batteries. My only real complaint is that I'm worried my two year old will damage the trunk, because he's so tempted to hit it, but the toy wasn't made for two year olds. Oh, also, I wish that there were more butterflies. Perhaps there should be a supplementary butterfly pack? Anyway, my four year old and his 3, 4 and 5 year old friends love this game. And they can basically handle playing all by themselves, so it's not a game I have to oversee every second. I paid $18 for it, and I'd say it was marginally worth it.
Customer Review: Nice idea, poor execution. Summary: 2 Stars
This is the kind of toy I'd wish I'd gotten a smoking deal on. It's not the worst game we have in the closet, but it wasn't worth the $25 we paid for it.
For starters, the butterflies do not fly very well once outside of the elephants trunk. The fan doesn't blow very well, so there isn't much extra help to get those butterflies going, either. The butterflies just come out of the trunk and drop. So the kids just stand there - not like on the tv commercial...
Also, depending on the age of your children, they're either going to be too good or not ready for the game. I have 4 kids plus their friends. And we've found that there isn't a lot of middle ground. Either they're great at this, or they have a lot to learn about catching butterflies... So having the good kids and the bad kids play together causes problems. Beware of this.
Anyway - if you read this review before buying, only buy this game if it's a super good deal (or your child is dying to have it) It's not worth the full price.
Customer Review: More Butterflies, If You Please Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great toy that develops hand eye coordination. I learned about it because a friend who has a sister who teaches occupational thearapy to kids told her that this was the toy all OT people use with their kids. Just thought I would let people know that if they wish there were more butterflies (a common complaint in the other reviews), they can go to the Hasbro website and order more. One of my babysitters must have played with this 'cause when I took it out of the box, there were only 6 butterflies! I checked the Hasbro site and was pleasantly surprised that all parts may be ordered separately. Everything. The trunk, the butterflies, the nets, the plastic battery cover. This is the only company I know that does this: for all others, you lose a piece and your child loves the toy. So buy another one. Hasbro rocks. So even if you haven't lost butterflies, but wish there were more? Go ahead an order more. The website says it takes some ridiculously long time to get them; but we got ours within the week.
