Customer Review: Regular Version is Better
Summary: 3 Stars
First a note on the quality. Both sides of the debate in the reviews are correct. The quality is indeed pretty low, and if you dont figure out how to put it together right and/or you mistakenly let your kid "help" its going to be a nightmare that you'll never get right or enjoy playing. However, I was familiar with the low quality from the purchase of the original (non Star Wars) version (this one was a gift) and, being familiar with the product, and having screwed it up pretty badly the first time, this time I managed to get it set up properly, forbidding the kids from helping. Basically, there is a trick to getting the little paper character portraits properly positioned in the holders, and IF you use the trick, they are more or less stable for a while. If you dont figure out how to do it just right, it aint gonna work. IF set up properly and one takes care with it, it should be playable for a bit. Eventually, when the kids play this unsupervised with their friends, they are probably going to cause some problems, but the game will last a little bit with only moderately annoying maintenance as cards fall out. Its the same construction as the original game, which I think has 4 or 4.5 stars in review. Of course, that doesnt cost as much as this version. The price is crazy for a game constructed this cheaply.
Apart from extra cost for this version (we got it as a gift) my real problem with this version is that the differences between the Star Wars characters are not as pronounced as those in the original version of the game, making for a less balanced guessing experience. Indeed, the game includes a "cheat sheet" to explain who the good guys and bad guys are, who is a robot and who isnt (its not obvious except to hardcore fans), and the specific affilliation of each character (which even true fans may not know or remember). In the original "Guess Who" game, the characters are divided amongst many traits (man/woman/hat/glasses/beard, etc.) Here, there just arent as many traits, and/or they arent remotely balanced. For example, there are very few female Star Wars characters. So if someone asks the question "is it a girl?" and it turns out that the mystery person is female, the game is mostly over. Similarly, you can still have 3-4 people left, and no question to narrow them down other than guessing names, which doesnt happen in the original. The traits are not necessarily balanced all that well in the original, but it seems worse here.
Note that kids seem to really dig the game play of "Guess Who" even if, as an adult, you may not fully understand why. The kids that liked Star Wars will probably like this. However, given the quality issues you might be better off waiting till they get it as a birthday gift then buying it for you own kids. If you do buy it, suggest the original. In addition to having more diverse features to make guessing easier and more natural, it also seems to be significantly cheaper.
