Toys and Games Reviews of Guess Who? Board Game

Customer Review: Guess Who has Excellent Game Play
Summary: 5 Stars

Just to set the record straight: this is a great game your kids will likely enjoy. I didn't get this for my daughter's 6th birthday because of some negative reviews I read here, but luckily someone else gave it to her and it was a big hit. My daughter, 6, loves it, my son, 8, loves it and their parents love the game also.

Granted, the game construction is less than perfect, as is the case with most games from Hasbro or Mattel, which is disappointing, but these companies no longer make the best games, and construction is always poor, so I was expecting that. However, its not as bad as some of these reviews imply. The game requires one up-front effort to load the character cards in the doors and that is a bit tedious, but it is truly a one-time effort. Then you attach the doors to the base and it is pretty much a snap. We have a minor problem with a few of the doors falling off the base now and then, but its not that big a deal--it's disappointing, but like I said, I expect that from mass market toy companies. Also, the "suspect" cards are too small in my opinion, but that's a minor point. The great game-play far outwieghs these drawbacks and my kids hardly notice it (but they nearly always play against an adult).

This game is similar to 20 questions or Mystery Garden (another game my kids love). Each player has one board with 24 doors containing possible suspects and one suspect card. Each player tries to guess the opponent's suspect by asking Yes/No questions about character features (gender, ey color etc). The doors on the board base are used to eliminate characters as potential suspects. When you have one door left open, you have (hopefully) identified your opponents suspect card.

Another complaint in these reviews was that there were only 5 female characters. This feature of the game is by design. Each feature category, such as gender, or eye color, is separated into two characteristic values (e.g, male-female, brown-blue) and one value is held by 5 characters (e.g., female, blue eyes, wearing a hat etc.) and the other value (male, brown eyes, without a hat) is held by the other characters. This feature is what makes the game work. Occasionally a player will ask a question that is right on the mark, such as "Is your character wearing a hat", and when the opponent answers "Yes", the player can eliminate all but up to 5 of the characters (or 19 at most if its your first question). Although, there is a lot of luck involved, the kids love when that happens, but it doesn't happen all the time either. Most of the time, the answer is "No" and you can only eliminate up to 5 potential suspects. To balance this out, when the player reduces his suspect list to 1, the opponent can make a guess as there is nothing to lose. The kids also love when their guesses are right.

So, there is a bit of luck in the game, however, there is also strategy and it really gets your kids thinking. There is an advantage to the player that goes first, but you can alternate. There are minor drawbacks to game construction, but the pleasure you will have from playing the game greatly out-weighs these. Therefore, don't hesitate, buy this game for your age appropriate kids and I bet they will love it.

Description of Guess Who? Board Game

There's a mystery person on your opponent's card. Can you find the matching face in the crowd' Start with a gameboard full of silly-looking characters, then ask the right questions to eliminate the wrong faces! If you're first to discover your opponent's mystery person, you win! For 2 players. Contents: two plastic gameboard trays, 24 mystery cards, 48 face cards and face frames, two score keepers, eight rubber feet and instructions in English and Spanish. Assembly required. Colors and product may vary.
A wonderful blend of deduction with a form of 20 Questions. Two players try to deduce the identity of their opponent's "Mystery Person." Using game boards with 48 frames apiece and an equal number of cards displaying character faces, players ask one another yes or no questions that help narrow the pool of possibilities. Through process of elimination, the identity of the Mystery Person slowly becomes evident. As kids' skill levels grow, their questions become more strategic, allowing them to solve the mystery faster and faster. The faces on the cards are cheerful and clever and designed to give subgroups among the 48 characters just enough similarities to challenge players. --Tom Keogh
