Toys and Games Reviews of Game Folio Scrabble

Customer Review: Scrabble Collector
Summary: 1 Stars

I guess I am a picky person! I collect Scrabble Games and this is the worst Scrabble product I bought. It was returned to the Scrabble Company. Fortunately, they had one of the older versions, which is much better. They should have left well enough alone. The Scrabble Folio is too hard to handle. The letters in the rack are a real pain. You cannot slide them around to try forming different words. The letters sometimes fly off the board. Not much fun crawling around on the train under peoples seats trying to retrieve the letters. It is not a pleasant task trying to get the letters off the board. The biggest problem that I had, is that the board itself kept popping shut. I am not arthritic nor am I a senior. I do not have fat fingers. But, if I were any of the above, I would be even more disappointed. Scrabble makers should keep people with motor skill problems in mind. I would not recommend this game to anyone. The very best travel Scrabble was a small hardboard gameboard with plastic letters with little magnets in them. This was released sometime in the fifties or sixties....I can't remember. In my opinion, the Scrabble people are no longer making nice, good products.

Customer Review: Compact and easy to use

If you play board games only at home, then there is really no need for alternative forms. But if you like to play away from home -- say at a coffee shop, on a train, or someplace outdoors, a traditional board game format usually does not work well. The problem with most board games is the board itself -- large, containing creases (so it tends to fold up on itself if not set on a perfectly flat surface). And the pieces do not stay in place, a particular problem when playing on a moving vehicle, or outdoors in drafty areas.

This board game solves most of those problems. First, it is very compact, so it fits easily on those smallish tables provided in most Internet coffee shops. Since it is small, it is easy to carry -- just stow it in your backpack or suitcase. Second, the game pieces lock into place, so a slight breeze or rough stretch in the tracks will not send the tiles flying or sliding around.

The only negative is that some tiles tend to pop out of the retaining squares on the board. A little cleaning up of the edges of the tiles with a pocket knife seems to solve this problem.

Customer Review: Very Disapointed!

My husband and I own several scrabble games as we are avid players and we never travel without one. We were very disappointed with this version however for all of the resaons already mentioned -"the board not laying flat, pieces popping out and so on. I really hope that someday Hasbro makes a really nice travel edition without these problems. In the meantime I have thought of making my own for travel. As luggage space is so valuable when you fly I would ditch the case altogether and have a flat magnetic board. I would carry my tiles in a separate bag. I have considered gluing small pieces of refrigerator magnets to the backs of the tiles. While I am dreaming I wish Santa-I mean Hasbro! would come out with a small travel dictionary. If it had small print and no definitions and only listed the official words in alphabetical order then I think it should be easy to make one that would truely be pocket sized. Every true Scrabble aficiondo knows you can't play a good game of scrabble without that dictionary handy as bluffing is half the fun! Think Word-Poker :)

Customer Review: With a little patience, a fantastic travel game

If you're a Scrabble nut (like my wife and I), this handy little road version of the home game is a blessing. It very handily folds up for storage and can be quickly and easily broken out for use. During a recent trip with several long layovers and securiuty stops, we never hesitated to break out the game and play a hand or two. Two annoying features: the aforementioned "popping" tendancy of the tiles to go flying through the air, and an inability to shuffle your tiles around on the racks. A minor third annoyance is lack of space in the traveling case for a dictionary (which has lead to some airport acrimony) - you have to place all the included items just so just to get it closed. Nevertheless, if you're willing to a) press down on the surrounding tiles when placing new ones for security, b) use your visual imagination with your tile rack and c) get the wife to carry a paperback dictionary in her purse, this is an indispensible accessory for road trips, flights, and vacations.

Customer Review: Excellent Quality and Well Thought Out Design
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this as a supplement to my full size version of Scrabble because it was on sale and had free shipping. I was worried that it might just be an exact replica on a smaller scale, but I must say that in many ways it puts the larger version to shame.

First off, the letter lock into the board, which might not seem like a big deal, but definitely makes it "travel" worthy on a whole new level.

The components are all of excellent quality and the entire game is very durable. The zip-up case it comes in is a bonus as well.

Most importantly, I was very impressed with the way that every component snaps into place, allowing for truly excellent economy of space when folded away. The letter trays all snap into place on the back of the board before folding it in half, which really makes it easy to open later. At the right price (under $10) I would say that this is a great addition to the game collection.
