Toys and Games Reviews of FurReal Friends Butterscotch PonyCustomer Review: The Do's and Don'ts of Butterscotch Summary: 4 Stars
Most of the reviews are very informative and they helped me a lot to decide whether I wanted to order this toy. The only think that could add value to the pre-existing body of knowledge would be for me to try to organize the more important bits in ways that the manual does not.
Logistics:
- Watch for a sale. Prices fluctuate and you don't want to pay a lot. Butterscotch was available at Amazon for less than one hundred for one hour this year. I paid a lot more myself and it was something between the high and the low.
- Exercise discretion. The box does show Butterscotch on it. If you order it, like I did, weeks in advance of actually presenting it to my little girl, make sure she's not there when the delivery is made.
- Buy batteries. You will need SIX D-cell batteries or your girl.
- Make sure that you have a Phillips screwdriver for the assembly.
- Pre-assemble it before offering her to your little girl. The box has the head separated from the body and you don't want her to see it that way. You will need to tighten about 3 screws and zip up the fabric around the neck.
Good things about Butterscotch:
- Battery saving mode - she goes to sleep at night or whenever nothing happens around for a while.
- Many sensors (14, I believe). She reacts to motion, touch, light and sound and she can actually detect the origin of a sound (turns her head toward you when you call her)
- Solid frame. It's quite safe for your girl to ride on top of her.
- Several routines. She makes soft sounds, wiggles her tail, open-closes eyes, turns her head toward you and mimics eating.
- Good coat and mane, your girl is likely to enjoy grooming her.
The not so good things about Butterscotch:
- The motor that moves her head makes a rather loud, mechanical sound.
- The neck appears to be fragile and, the final stage of her turning her head is a bit scary (looks as if life was just drained out of her and she went limp)
- Not to easy to turn her off from the master switch.
To conclude, my 5 yr. old girl loves Butterscotch and she is inviting all her girlfriends to come and see that "it's true" :). This was a Christmas present so I don't know for how long this will last but, 5 days later she's still playing with her - sometimes she's watching her favorite TV shows on top of her.
I found the assembly to be easy and quick and, so far nothing broke. My main concern is the neck but I haven't seen any reviews complaining about the neck breaking so... we shall see. I will update this review if anything bad happens.
Customer Review: Know Butterscotch's limitations before buying - Pony is a cute toy, but unlikely to sustain prolonged interest Summary: 3 Stars
Features I'd like to see from Butterscotch/S'mores:
*Ability to interact and respond to voice commands as well.
*Noise-free motor when pony moves head (would add to realism).
*Some type of animation from the pony's lower half - e.g. ability to lift front leg, shift weight, etc. The Furreal puppy is able to do this so it seems possible that the pony could as well. Butterscotch in its current form is "paralyzed" from the hindquarters down.
*More than just head movement and galloping sounds when pony is in "walking" mode.
*Ability to interact with other Furreal animals, especially the other Furreal pony.
*Better access to on/off switch - opening the Velcro slit under Butterscotch's belly is awkward. Plus, the "ripping" sound of Velcro every time you want to turn Butterscotch on/off can be disturbing for some small children. I wish you could turn activate Butterscotch by patting a particular part of her body; similarly, I wish you could deactivate Butterscotch by patting another part of her body.
*I wish the pony's flank (mid-section) would mimic a real pony's breathing.
*Reduced suggested retail price (e.g. more in the range of $[...]).
Notwithstanding the above, Butterscotch is a cute toy.
But be forewarned: you may be disappointed with this toy's capabilities if you don't know its limitations before you buy (especially if you are paying the outrageous suggested retail price). In reality, this toy is slightly more innovative than one of those stuffed animals from the 80's that did flips and responded to remote control, which is not to say that children won't find Butterscotch cute and fun to play with. My 6 year old daughter "ooh-ed" and "ahh-ed" over Butterscotch for the first hour or so but then moved on to other things (her bike, motorized ride-on vehicles, leapster, etc.). I would note that the more positive reviews of the Furreal pony line came from buyers who had children under the age of 5 years. With the proliferation of electronic gadgets available to today's youth, I suppose the reality is that it simply takes more to capture and sustain the attention and interest of kindergarten aged (and beyond) children.
Customer Review: Caved in Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter has begged for this gift for the past 2 years. I refused to give in because of the price but when I saw this on Amazon for half off of what it was originally sold for I just had to jump on it. Now I may have to edit this review because I have not put it together. I've only pulled it out of the box to make sure it was what I paid for. With that said. I've looked high and low searching for something similar in quality for less money. I'm glad I didn't skimp. This truly is the real deal, . . accept no other imitations. For one thing my daughter is 6 years old. The other horses out there although cheaper are not as tall or as sturdy. I think that they would be great for younger kids. For another thing, . . lets face it having the carrot is a big deal to a kid. It is extremely life like and interactive. Sure this thing will probably end up becoming an expensive coat rack after a while but the anticipation of the look on her face on Christmas morning is well worth it. I know that she is not expecting it at all since I told her that it was just way to much money for a toy. Oh and another thing the seller from Amazon had this thing on my door step within 24 hours for no additional charge. Now that could have been some sort of deal or promo to move these things but how can you beat that. On top of that the FED EX guy that delivered was so nice as to warn me that the box was NOT covered and asked me if there were any kids around. How cool was that! So overal great seller, great product.
--updated review
Well, the look on my daughter's face on Christmas was absolutely priceless. We put Butterscotch together on Christmas Eve with a giant red bow around her neck. Butterscotch is interactive, moves when petted in certain spots. Crunches on a carrot. This is a very impressive toy. Now the bad. My daughter is 6 and the head of this toy needs assembly. I don't know how much abuse this thing can handle. I've told my daughter not to lean on the neck of Butterschotch because in all honesty I don't believe that it will hold up. The neck moves from side to side and is not very solidly constructed. Oh and it is big. Very big, so make sure you have space in your childs room.
Customer Review: Great toy for child with sensory processing difficulties Summary: 4 Stars
We have a 9 year old daughter with some sensory processing delays. She's a bit young for her age and when she asked for the "yellow Smores" we weren't sure if it was worth the cost. I missed out on the ninety nine dollar lightning deal, but did pick Butterscotch up for just under a hundred and fifty with free shipping. As others have mentioned, this box leaves nothing to the imagination, so please be careful! Also, the pony comes headless, so if possible, try to assemble prior to giving if at all possible. The head is located in a small boxy that is under the pony's belly inside the big box. Assembly wasn't difficult and in only a few minutes Butterscotch was fully assembled and ready to go. She takes six D size batteries and I'll try to update my review with the battery life soon.
I thought it entirely possible that this would be one of the gifts we'd buy, our daughter would enjoy the initial excitement of Butterscotch and then it would wind up taking up space in the corner somewhere. Not true so far. Our daughter loves this horse and she'll tell you that she loves her pony, really loves her. With her sensory processing issues, I wasn't sure how it would go over, but she loves being able to sit on the pony, lean on her, the fur, brushing Butterscotch's hair, the movements and noise. It is enough without being too overwhelming. She also likes figuring out just what to do in order to make Butterscotch respond the way she wants.
When Butterscotch's head moves, there is some mechanical sound, but its not too loud, we've not had any loud clicking or anything like that either. I wish the on/off switch on the underside was a little more accessible for our daughter, but after a few times of showing her and helping her, she is able to switch it by herself now.
Our daughter enjoys taking care of Butterscotch much like she does with her baby dolls. Since our daughter has a difficult time expressing herself and forming relationships, Butterscotch has been ideal for her needs. I'm very happy with our purchase and expect Butterscotch to be part of our family for awhile.
Customer Review: Butterscotch Pony: The Review Summary: 3 Stars
Hi it's me Allie again and today we are going to review the new Furreal Friends Butterscotch Pony. There is also a pinto version named s'mores and I pesonally think the pinto is a lot cuter! Here is what I think of this toy. Butterscotch is very cute, but very overpriced. I think it would be more reasonable if Butterscotch was around seventy dollars. I think that is about what it is worth according to a kid's perspective. Butterscotch is adorable. It eats its carrot, neighs and whinnies, responds to your voice, can be sat on and more. Butterscotch can hold even and eighty pound kid! The horse doesn't actually move but it bounces and makes galloping noises. What I have heard is that it is not always reliable and some kids get bored of it quickly. I think it would be good for the 2-6 age group. Older kids would probably find it boring. Sometimes you have to be patient with it because the one they were showing on the David Letterman Show was not turning on. It is also not a good idea to shoot spitballs at it like David did to get it going. The horse also has a loud motor as some customers say. You have to give the pony a break because it really is cute though. I bet a younger kid wouldn't even notice the motor noises! Butterscotch also comes with a curry comb and a carrot. You can buy an additional accessory pack that comes with a blanket, some leg warmers, grass the horse can eat and a blue ribbon if you like butterscotch. I hope you enjoyed this review. Make sure to try the horse out and keep your receipt. Look at some other reviews on here and watch the demo. If you want more on how it works and seeing it in action watch videos about it on[...].-Allie age 13FurReal Friends Butterscotch Pony
