Toys and Games Reviews of Electronic Catch Phrase

Customer Review: AWESOME, but get the original electronic version
Summary: 5 Stars

GOOD: This is the best, most portable, easy to learn party game you will ever play. Just sit in a circle, every other person on one team, pick a category and get your teammates to say the word that comes on the screen. When they do, you just pass it on. Hurry, because if your team hasn't gotten your word when the buzzer goes off, the other team gets a point. The compact little game disc keeps score for you and the first team to get seven points wins!

BAD: I have had the original electronic version of this game (bright blue and silver) for several years and played it A LOT, and I have only had MAYBE 5-10 repeated words ever. I bought a few of the second edition games (blue and white) as prizes for my students, and when we played them, we got SEVERAL repeats within a couple hours of playing. Therefore, if you can find it, I highly recommend the original version over the newer one. Otherwise, I'm not sure it's worth your money.

Customer Review: Exciting and fun with some small nits in electronic version
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this game a few months ago and have since played it several times with both close friends and at larger gatherings. This game is probably best up to about 14 people.

Electronic catch phrase is highly addictive and in my opinion is better than the print version because it speeds up the game play. There is a huge memory in this version so you can play a long time before you start seeing repeat words. The size and ease of using the controls is great and well made. Overall, it is also very durable for an electronic game.

Pros:
- Light, portable design
- Easy to start and play (little setup)
- Fun and exciting for groups
- Large word list
- Category selection

Cons:
- No off switch
- No volume switch

Overall: I highly recommend this game to everyone as a house staple for any parties that you may have or for a fun group/family night.

Customer Review: Great for youth groups and parties--as long as you have an even number of people
Summary: 5 Stars

Advantages:
1-Easy explanation of rules, and rule flexibility
2-Addicting - you can't just play one game
3-Requires you to think of creative ways to suggest words
4-No clean-up, no cards, all you have to do is push buttons
5-Long battery life

Disadvantages:
1-Even though it has a large number of words, it tends to repeat itself within a small amount of time.
2-Not good for people with little pop-culture knowledge and don't know what movies certain people were in
3-No off-button- I've had it in a bag before when it accidentally got pressed up against, and the loud timer started going off.
4-Must have even amount of players for it to work.

OVERALL: Must-have for any person that wants to have only the best party games. This game is easy to learn, use, and enjoy. I bring it on all my youth group's trips and we always have a blast.

Customer Review: Stick With The Non-Electronic Version If You Can!
Summary: 4 Stars

Catch Phrase is a great game, perfect for parties, excellent for large groups. It is a terrific game to play before Taboo, because it encourages the very kind of clue-giving that is outlawed in Taboo. This means your Taboo game will be trickier to play immediately following.

But, this electronic version is a pain. Keeping the timer and the word advancer buttons on the same device is cause for occasional confusion and player mistakes. And, the scoring requires you to hit a button (that doesn't really look like a button) on the device marked either "1" or "2" meaning team 1 or team 2. The weird part is that "2" button is at the top, and the "1" button is at the bottom. Very confusing.

During a forty-five minute period of play, we had to stop the game about five or six times to correct someone accidentally hitting a wrong button for one reason or another.

Customer Review: Great game for gatherings and for trivia buffs
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't own the game personally, but am going to buy it. Have played it a couple times with family and the energy level is awesome. I spent so much time laughing that my face hurt.

I liken it to the 80's game "Pictionary", where you draw the clues instead of say them. Add in a hot-potato variable and it's sure to be a winner!

The recommendation for above 17 years of age, could be reduced by a few years, depending on the teenager, but some clues are very easy and some are very hard.

Warning: watch out for HIGHLY competitive individuals!

The idea of a bonus point for the other team correctly guessing the catchphrase didn't work for us, as the person giving the clues tended to give out the answer as soon as the buzzer went off. We did away with that rule, as it soon became apparent that the clue-giver could forestall the bonus point by blurting out the answer, which was frustrating.
