Here's the short review for this game: Buy it now!!
Here's the longer review:
Catch Phrase is a simple game to learn and provides hours of fun, especially at a party. Do you remember the game 'hot potato'? Imagine hot potato, but with only two teams. The 'potato' is the electronic toy and you aren't allowed to get rid of it until you've gotten your team to say the "catch phrase" on the screen. You can say almost anything you want, but the phrase, any part of the phrase, or rhyming hints.
The game provides you with a few different categories to choose from or you can go for 'Everything' (more difficult as you have no reference point).
Unlike some other reviews, our game does not announce team scores our game was calibrated to win only after 7 points, not 10, so there must be a few variations out there for this product.
Here are the reasons I love this game:
1. Easy to learn - The concept is so simple, you don't even need to have directions. This is great for parties because you can start having fun immediately even with friends who don't know the rules.
2. Compact: Because the game is comprised of the electronic unit only, you can toss it in the car before heading out to you to the local pub or to a friend's house.
3. No cards or pieces to get lost: All the phrases are in the game's memory, so you don't need a board, tokens, cards, or any other parts to play. It's all in one place.
4. Games are short and fast: I love games like Risk and Monopoly as much as anyone else, but as we all know, these games take a long LONG time to play. This is probably the biggest objection anyone can raise against playing these games. Catch Phrase is immune from this challenge. The first team to score 7 points wins. Because of this low score, it only takes maybe 10 minutes to play one round. When the game is over, it's hard to say no to the inevitable "just one more time?".
5. Everyone loves it: You'll always come across folks claiming "not to like games". Well, I have a view on this. I say there are two types of people in this world. People who love games, and people who don't yet know they love games. The combination of Catch Phrase's ease of use and short play makes it easy to pull the nay-sayers in. Once they try a few times, they are hooked. Never fails.
Potential improvements:
1. Volume control: Our unit is pretty quiet. I'd like to make it a bit louder, but there is no volume control I could find.
2. Point limit change: As I mentioned, our unit limits games to only 7 points. I'd prefer to be able to set this value manually for longer play. Playing a 10, 15, or 21 point game would be great.
3. Off Switch: There is no off switch. The game turns off after a few minutes of no play. I'd prefer to be able to actively save batteries.
4. Ability to upload more words: I'm not sure how many phrases are stored in the game, but there is a limit. Evenutally, as with trivial pursuit, some fervent players will find duplicate phrases and be able to guess these. It'd be nice to be able to download phrases from the web into the unit.
Description of Electronic Catch PhraseFor 4 or more players in teams, Electronic Catch Phrase is the game of 10,000 words and a million laughs. The self-contained electronic unit has words, categories and a timer and scorekeeper. Perfect for taking on vacation. Requires 3 "AAA" alkaline batteries (not included). Ever play "Hot Potato" with a spud that ticks and talks? Welcome to Electronic Catch Phrase, the battery-powered (three AAA, not included) blend of clue deduction and race against the clock. Two teams of two or more players each alternate turns, guessing the answers to clues in 11 categories, from Food & Drink to Tech & Inventions. Set the timer on the discus-like game unit, and the clue-giving countdown begins; if a team's guess matches the response on the game's readout, pass the unit to the opponents. Just don't get caught holding this potato when the buzzer sounds (after about a minute of increasingly insistent beating), as the other team will score a point, possession being nine- tenths of the "Awww!" With its infectious mix of fast, nerve-wracking, high- pressure passing the buck, Electronic Catch Phrase spreads a serious case of fun. --Tony Mason
