Toys and Games Reviews of Easy Bake Oven

Customer Review: It's all in the Light-Bulb
Summary: 5 Stars

I read alot of negative reviews on this product and was afraid to even buy it,but then it went on sale for [...] (with free-shipping!)so I just went for it.First off,you do have to buy a "old fashioned" 100 watt bulb. Not extended life - not soft white - not energy efficient - not get the picture. This was harder than it sounds as nobody carries these bulbs anymore. Not Lowes,Not Walmart,Not Target but I did find a GE Crystal Clear 100 watt bulb at Home Depot and it worked just fine.Perfect actually. We made the cake first.Mixed up the batter (included) and put it in the oven for the recommended amount of time (12 mins if I recall correctly) and it came out perfect.Seriously! It came out with just a hint of brown on the edges and everything! Just like mom used to make!! We whipped up the frosting (included , spead it on and it actually tasted pretty darn good. Then we decided to get creative and baked some "ready to bake" cookies from pilsbury we had in the fridge.Put the first one in too long at 15 mins and the bottom was a little dark,so we backed it off to 10 mins and it came out perfect.Just as good as the normal oven.I was impressed.Like the title states I believe it to be all in the bulb. Some people stated that the cakes were coming out not-cooked etc.....they must have been using the wrong bulb because it seriously worked perfect for me! Recommended!!

Customer Review: Fun memories with my daughter
Summary: 4 Stars

The Easy Bake brought a smile to my little girl's face. She's only 3, but she loves to be in the kitchen with me. She was very excited to have an oven of her very own. I had to giggle at how small the cakes are - they seemed so much bigger and delicious when I was a kid. My daughter seemed enchanted with baking a cake all of her own.

The Easy Bake came with 3 mixes which made 1 yellow "cake" with frosting and some sugar cookies. We baked the "cake" right away - it looked more like a cookie when it came out. It didn't stop my daughter from beaming with pride as we frosted it for her and her daddy to share.

We live in a small town and had a difficult time tracking down the proper light bulb to work with the unit. We had to wait until we made a trip to the nearest "big town" to get the right bulb.

We purchased the children's cookbook that is a recommended purchase from Amazon. That was the best purchase! The mixes are expensive and not much fun. My daughter enjoyed the "real" recipes. The recipes in the book are great - we had everything on hand and they came with their own measuring spoons for the tiny amounts needed. The book makes the Easy Bake much more versatile. I wouldn't purchase the oven with out it!

Customer Review: It's more fun to bake with your children using a real oven
Summary: 2 Stars

The Easy Bake Oven was a disappointment on our first baking session. First of all, it doesn't come with the light bulb. It uses 100W light bulb and it can't be long life or anything else special like that. Just a plain, clear 100W bulb. See instructions or small print on box for details. Second, the food that it comes with is so tiny and therefore the price is too high for what you are getting. Food also takes longer to bake than it says. The only reason we got it was b/c our daughter (5 1/2 years old) asked for it for Christmas. It was practically the only thing she asked for. We told her it was for 8 year olds but since she was younger, we could do it with her (not by herself). I personally would much rather bake with my daughter using a real oven than the Easy Bake... plus the real/kitchen oven's quality of food is a lot more tasty and appealing. ;) Our daughter does not seem excited about the Easy Bake oven anymore since she was disappointed with the taste of her first goody that she made. We will have to try a recipe out of the cookbook (Baking with Mommy Cookbook, also offered at Amazon.com) to fully decide if this Easy Bake oven is even worth it at all. Unfortunately, we haven't tried that yet so I can't put that in this review.

Customer Review: Not impressed...
Summary: 2 Stars

Unfortunately, our first experience with the easy bake was not good. My daughter had fun at first mixing up the batter and getting it all prepared but after putting it in the oven she couldn't get the holder off so Daddy had to stick it in by hand, then push it (We also had a hard time using the holder to get it out of the oven). You can't see it cook so after the cooking and cooling time we pulled out a flat cake. By the time we were finished preheating, mixing, cooking, cooling and frosting, it had taken a total of about 45 mins for that tiny little flat cake which each of my three kids got one little bite of. (The girl on the box must have slaved all day making her little plate of treats.)

Now, when I was eight, I knew how to use a real oven. With the time it took and the assistance we had to give I would have much rather taught her how to use a beater and add the ingredients and set the oven temp, etc on a real oven - something she will actually use in the future. So for educational purposes, I really don't think this was very realistic. I understand the perk for most people is the fact that little to no supervision is needed. But when using a real oven, you get a 5-star educational value and quality time with your child. Priceless.

Customer Review: Could be so much better
Summary: 3 Stars

Even as a child I remember being a little unsatisfied with this toy. But it is most definately a beloved toy with fond memories. Almost a rite of passage type toy, like a baby doll. The pans are smaller now, not as deep it seems.
My 7 year old loves it. Education wise, it has very little, having her help me cook in the kitchen would be much more educational. It does teach measuring, pouring, understanding written directions, patience, and cooking practice.
I agree with reviewer who would like to see improvements.
A timer would add to the educational value of the toy and I can't see how it could add much to the cost. Until they do, get a dollar store timer and stick it in the packaage.
Instead of a lightbulb, which WAS difficult to find, why not a toaster heating element?
Silicone pans may not be hard enough to push through the openings.
Why not do away with the small mixes all together and just include a cookbook?
With all the work you have to do as an adult supervisor with this toy, it would be easier to just teach the child to cook with real kitchen items. But then again, it makes your little one sooooo happy to make a crappy cake in these ovens....long live the easy bake!
