Toys and Games Reviews of Easy Bake OvenCustomer Review: ABSOLUTELY STUPID AND NOT "Easy" Bake Summary: 1 Stars
When my son got this for Christmas, I thought that I should try it out on the first day. I had one as a child, and it was like they were growing legs and walking out of the stores as fast as the production! I thought that this wouldn't disappoint. So, I plugged in the oven, looked in the booklet, and I looked for the 100-watt lightbulb everywhere in the box that it came in. It turns out you have to buy one from the Home Depot unless you have one buried in your closet. Speaking of electricity, when I plug this thing in, it make a tiny blue surge between the outlet and the plug that you can see! Talk about an overpriced dangerous electrical surging piece of plastic! When I look in the booklet for how to make the yellow cake mix, I take careful measuring. My son absolutely LOVES the donut mix. What disappoints me and my 9-year-old daughter the MOST is that they take so long to cook. If you're trying to cook 1 cookie, at least put in more to shorten time! My daughter that I already mentioned said that they design is just weird. The door doesn't open, and the buttons are fake. I have to rely on a REAL WORKING TIMER to time the cookies. When my daughter bit into a waffle made by the oven, she nearly gagged. She told me to try it and she was right. She said it tasted like cardboard mixed with essence of dumpster in Seattle. I looked on the packaging for the mix, and it said "Artificially flavored". There is absolutely nothing educational about this. Not much improvement from last year, the year before, or even that huge recall last year. Sorry to say, but if I could rate this below 1, it would be about a -5/5.
I HONESTLY THINK THAT THIS IS A TERRIBLE TOY.
Customer Review: 3 stars from me. 5 stars from my kid. Lets call it 4! Summary: 3 Stars
As my 8 year old daughter scraped and munched on the dried crumbs from the bottom of her baking pan, she had a big smile on her face and told me that this was the BEST cake she has tasted all year! From my daughter, this product is 5-stars, no doubt about it!
But from my grownup point of view, there is a lot of room for improvement in the Easy-Bake oven. Carefully following the directions gave us a yellow cake so hard that I broke the toothpick I was trying to use to help work it loose. When we finally did get it out, half of it was crispy and crumbly. The other half chewy and sticky. Our second cake came out a little better. I used a super moist betty crocker mix. I added 1.5 tsp of water to 2tbsp of cake mix. I think it would have been even better if I replaced the 1.5tsp of water with 1tsp water, .5tsp vegetable oil, and 1 drop of egg. But that would be a lot of trouble for 1 little snack.
We were a little disappointed in the timer and clock. But you have to keep in mind that this is a child's toy, not serious cookware. As far as I am concerned, it served its purpose when it brought a smile to my little girl's face.
On the positive side, unlike some reviewers we very easily found 100w lightbulbs at our local walmart. Cleanup was also easy. Less than an hour after making our cakes, I soaked the pans and utensils in warm water while I wiped down the melted chocolate from the main unit. When I got back to scrub the ban, it cleaned up very easily with a damp paper towel.
Customer Review: You bet I am going to Whine! Summary: 1 Stars
I am writing this review in response to "Been There World Traveler". Get off your soapbox. I just purchased this for my 6 year old granddaughter who prayed for an Easy Bake Oven for months and had it at the top of her Christmas list this year. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that this "toy" is unsafe. I can just imagine the law suits that are pending for burns alone. 100 watt lightbulbs are not easy to find anymore, either. And I know that the cake mixes are way overpriced and the end result is a tiny piece of cake that I would not feed to my dog. However, you bet your behind I am going to whine. With the money I just spent on this product, you bet I want it perfect. A person should not have to make compromises or concessions or "use a little ingenuity" to get a product to do what it claims to do. Since when is a company allowed to extort good American money from hard working Americans, for a product that they know kids are going to pine for, and then deliver it with shortcomings? It's no wonder people don't buy American anymore. The complaints that everyone has here on this "toy" are valid and justified. If a parent expecting to get their money's worth and some relative safety for this kids equates to "whining" I will be the first to stand in line to whine and you can bring me some cheese to go with it.
Enjoy your easy bake oven "Been There World Traveler". I am hoping my granddaughter's breaks on the first use so I can throw it in the garbage where it belongs.
Customer Review: Junk Summary: 1 Stars
First off I'm going to admit that I'm sorry I spent my money on this thing. It's so much easier to make real brownies and cakes in the kitchen with the kids. The food out of this Easy Bake oven is gummy, tastes bad and is TINY.
Like everyone else said, you have to buy the clear 100 watt bulb yourself. I found one at Home Depot. Lowes and Walmart didn't have any on the shelf. The frosted bulbs won't work.
The timer and clock are fake. (No surprise.) There is no on and off button either. You can't even watch your item bake by looking through the front window.
There are 2 mixes included in the box. Yellow cake mix (with icing) and a sugar cookie mix.
Alright I'm just going to say it. This is nothing for JUNK. The mixes are over WAY over priced. We tried several different recipes we found on-line and nothing turned out good or tasted good. You get these two tiny cheap pans. Ours came bent almost in half. There is no educational or entertainment value to this. My kids (6&7) are disappointed that the door doesn't open, the clock won't work and the timer is fake. WHAT IS THE POINT OF MAKING A FAKE TOY?
Buying this toy was the equivilent of buying a bike with the wheels welded tight. Nice to look at but not much fun to play with huh?
Please! Just spend a little time in the kitchen with your kids and let them enjoy making real food. This oven was nothing but a waste of money.
Customer Review: Best for families who don't cook together much Summary: 2 Stars
My 5 year old daughter won this at a raffle, boy was she excited! And indeed, she did have fun making a tiny cake (after bringing the only regular lightbulb into our house). But we have fun making mud pies too!
Issues - all have been previously outlined: hard to find bulb, weird push in and out system for baking, no timer, no window, expensive mixes (yes, you can make your own - which you should because they'll be healthier).
The other issue for us is the time it takes to make one, minuscule cake, 10 minutes to warm up, 12 min to cook and 10 to cool, if your child wishes to share his or her creations with siblings or parents - as we encourage, because it is very sociable to share a meal rather than just making one cookie and eating it - you are in for a long project!
Since we like to cook and bake anyway, this product was disappointing. However, if cooking is not a regular family activity, this might be a nice way to break the ice and get started.
Otherwise, I agree with the other reviewers who said just roll up your sleeves and make a whole batch in the real oven. The kids get more experience that way (mixing a tablespoon of mix with a 1/4 teaspoon with water is not all that gratifying in terms of cooking fun), and even my 5 year old can do most of the measuring and mixing and pouring herself, all I have to do is read the recipe, assemble the ingredients and pop the pan in the oven!
