Toys and Games Reviews of Easy Bake Oven

Customer Review: Have Oven, Will Bake/See Below For Bulb Info Before Purchase
Summary: 5 Stars

Nothin' more disappointing than a mom who doesn't do her Amazon homework and does not have a bulb for her kid's Easy Bake on Christmas day. Alert- below is the bulb info:

GE Decorative, Crystal Clear, A19, 90410, 100 watt bulb. Packaging is peach colored. We got our bulb at Target. You cannot find it at CVS or supermarkets. Only get frosted or standard bulbs; do not purchase soft white or long life bulbs.

What you need before the bakery opens:
-the above bulb
-Phillips head screwdriver
-flour
-non-stick cooking spray
-measuring spoons (the included spoon is one teaspoon, but for some strange reason Hasbro does not let you in on this info)
-mixing bowl (any small bowl will do and would be easier anyway)
-mini rubber spatula (my recommendation; for removing batter from bowl)
-cake tester/toothpick

Note: Do not freak about the smell that is released from the oven within the first few minutes. It is just protective, food-grade oil evaporating.

Useful Tips:
-Write out a cheat sheet so that you do not have to keep on opening up the instruction booklet to get to the info that you need.
-Use a paperweight to hold open the booklet while you are working on a recipe, otherwise, the booklet will just close up on its own.
-Lay out a big towel on your kitchen table if you do not have Martha Stewart counter space or an island.
-Have rags ready for spills or crying if projects taste terrible.

The Dirt on the Mixes:
Our Easy Bake oven came with sugar cookie, yellow cake, and chocolate frosting mixes. All the recommmended amounts of water stated in the recipe directions was never enough (water to add to mixes). The sugar cookie mix, the brownie mix, and the cake mix all needed more water in order to get adequately moistened. Just add extra water slowly and sparingly, as disaster can strike here (I killed our frosting with too much hydration). All recipes were easy to follow and everything came out fully cooked. Please see reviews on the mixes below:

-Sugar Cookie Mix: Easy to make, tasted just like the Pillsbury fridge cookies. No kidding!
-Yellow Cake Mix: Just O.K., had an anise taste to it.
-Chocolate Frosting Mix: Before I killed it, I tasted it (who can resist?). It was too sweet and somewhat grainy.
-Brownie Mix: Give to someone you despise.

My daughter did use the warming cups to make her own cashew chocolate bar, and it turned out great. Check out DIY mixes on the web.

Non-Obvious Reasons for My Star Ratings:
I gave four stars for educational value because a kid can learn the value of preparation, trial-and-error, and fractions while still having fun. Five stars for durability because I believe that unless you take a hammer to this thing, it will last (will update if I have any problems).

My Critique:
I had to stop myself from reading the prior negative reviews because I get so frustrated and flabbergasted. Where are some people coming from?! Really, people, this thing has not changed from when I used it, and that was about thirty years ago (gasp!). It is not called the "Easy Bake Oven" for nuthin'- this baby is truly easy to use. It was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame, no small feat there. I love spending time with my kids while reliving my childhood and piggin' out- what can be better?

P.S.I will one day read all of the heartbreaking, negative reviews in order to disperse accurate info to the masses. Please do not misunderstand me- I just feel that some reviews are written out of sheer furious revenge because we become grizzlies when we or our kids are disappointed.

1/18/11: Call me crazy; I have decided to give the Easy Bake a pro bono defense. Please see the charges listed below with my defense argument(s) following each charge.
1. Emanation of a plastic burning odor upon engaging oven.
This is not due to plastic parts burning within the oven; it is the food-grade oil evaporating.

2. Child gagging upon opening and smelling powdered mix.
Possible inhalation of product.

3. Working timer not a product feature.
A general household timer can be utilized.

4. Presence of working timer on oven can provide an educational opportunity in learning to tell time.
A non-digital clock would actually provide a better lesson in learning to tell time. Digital is fine for learning time management and for learning how to read (numbers ).

5. Oven should include upgraded silicone pans.
Silicone pans are not cost efficient for Hasbro; metal pans are more homey.

6. Pan placement and removal from oven is difficult.
This may be so if you have physical limitations. It did not seem difficult to me, although I am an adult. I am sure that Hasbro has gone through numerous trials in order to affirm that an eight-year-old (and up) can perform these above actions.

7. Light bulb cooking method is strange.
This is how chestnuts were roasted by NYC street vendors in the early 1960's; this was the inspiration for the EBO. Also, this strange method works.

8. Children require adult supervision with this oven.
Yes, what a pity, children sometimes do require supervision. One reviewer stated that it was easier for her children to use a real oven (implying that they use a real oven alone)...now that's a crazy situation! With a real oven, even more supervision is needed!

9. Mixes are not the same as the "big name brand" mixes.
Yes, they basically are. Just compare the ingredients.

10. Using the EBO involves a lot of work.
How is it any more work than baking with a real oven? It is the same process, just "kiddified"/miniaturized.

11. Oven only allows a small amount of batter to be baked during a cycle.
This product is aimed at children. Plus, this is all the oven is capable of baking at one time. If you're looking for larger amounts, I suggest calling your local bakery. If you have a larger brood waiting for the goods, tell them to wait or clean up the kitchen for ten to fifteen minutes. If they can wait for you to get off of Facebook, then they can wait for a cake. (An aside here- I think that the small cakes/cookies are charming.)

12. Bulbs are not included with the oven.
Bulbs are delicate items that could possibly break during transport of the ovens. Hasbro does not want a lawsuit due to a broken-bulb-laceration upon opening their product. Hey, batteries do not come with other toys, so what's the problem? They have to be purchased separately as well. My daughter was disappointed when told that we had to get a bulb for the oven. We had a huge snowstorm at the time, and she ended up waiting for at least two weeks for us to get a bulb. She lived.

13. Bulbs are hard to find.
They are at your local Lowe's, Walmart, and Target. We live in a rural area, and we have the aforementioned retailers nearby.

14. Oven used two bulbs during one baking cycle.
Reviewer did not state condition or wattage of bulbs that she used; she reported that they were already in her home and implied that they were used. She still gave the oven a negative rating.

15. Mixes do not come with instructions.
Either the reviewer did not check the box of mixes thoroughly or she did not realize that the directions for the recipes directly follows the directions for the oven in general (see booklet that comes with oven). It is entirely possible that a Hasbro employee was daydreaming about Panera's and forgot to drop the instructions in the box of mixes before sealing.

16. Preparation takes too long (reviewer plugged in oven for warm-up after prep).
Um, you can prep while the oven is warming up.

17. Using this oven commits one to a "long project".
Does the person who made this statement ever bake with her own oven? (Note: About forty-five minutes for my EBO process. Fifteen minutes for each of the following actions: prep, doing dishes while the oven is baking, puttting back supplies while cakes/cookies are cooling. It could even take less time than that! It is so easy...)

18. Batter does not reach the top of the provided pan.
When making a non-EBO cake, one does not fill the batter to the top edge of a standard "adult" baking pan(s).

19. The EBO does not teach children how to bake.
Yes, it actually does- just in a simplified way. And what eight-year-old needs to know how to make a serious cake anyway? There's time for that in the future.

20. The EBO created a blue surge from plug to socket when plugging in, and is therefore dangerous.
This is basically an overloaded circuit, and it's the red surge that is dangerous, not the blue (my dad is an electrical engineer).

21. EBO's were recalled in 2009.
That was a "recall roundup" in 2009 (top ten "wanted" dangerous toys). The EBO's that were recalled were the front-loading ones- not the types that are being used and reviewed on Amazon presently. The front-loading ones were first recalled in January 2007.

22. Children can put hands inside of oven.
Of course they can. They can also put their hand inside of a real oven as well, but are people complaining about that basic kitchen appliance? If your kid is not the rule-following type, do not give him this oven.

23. A reviewer had to give her child the "false advertising" talk due to the fact that cakes/cookies came out of the oven in an unsatisfactory state (i.e.it/they did not look like the baked goods on the box), thus, gave the oven a negative review.
Firstly, this is not false advertisement...it is a legal, dirty facet of the advertising world. If her daughter is as bright and as independent as the reviewer stated, then her child should be ready to handle this subject. I've been telling my kid (7.5) about the above subject for about a year and a half now, and it has not given me or her a nervous breakdown. My kid also noticed that our end results did not look professional. I knew from past experience that the end results were not going to be stunning. We were just having fun, not trying to imitate our local upscale-yet-earthy bakery. (Note: One senator in the early 90's did try to stop ads (especially commercials) from being aimed at children, with obviously no success. Ads aimed toward children are not regulated by the Federal Trade Comission.)

Last jabs: Professional chefs have used this sucker since the early 2000's and have published at least one book aimed at adults for creating incredible tidbits. They are using more difficult recipes, but have you heard them whining? Some pros even credit the EBO for getting them interested in their trade in the first place. A clinical psychiatrist stated in a web article that when a child uses this oven and combines the elements of play and practicality that it touches our psyche deeply- in her other words- it's primal. Hey, the same article stated that Louisa May Alcott mentioned her version of an EBO in "Little Men", and that book was published in 1871! People, just loosen up and bake!

The classic Easy Bake is back in its latest and safest form.
Kid-friendly Oven Bakes Tasty Treats
The new Easy Bake Oven works like the idea of a conveyor belt--you push the uncooked treat in one side until it's in the middle of the oven, and then push it out the opposite side to cool when it's finished baking. The three included recipes require minimal work, making it simple for young kids who are new to the Easy Bake experience. After you have preheated the oven and sprayed your pans with cooking spray, just add water, stir, and pour the mix into the baking pan--there's definitely a reason it's called an Easy Bake!

There are strict warnings for required parental supervision while the oven is being used, to avoid any burns or misuse. A very important tip to keep in mind is that he light bulb needed must be a 100-watt frosted or standard light bulb. The bulb is not included in the set.
