Toys and Games Reviews of Deluxe Turntable Scrabble

Customer Review: Not Quite Deluxe
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a copy of the original Deluxe Edition that has an additional feature that this Deluxe Edition does not have.

This edition has the standard sturdy letter tiles familiar to all Scrabble players, a tile bag, and a wonderful playing board.

The board is mounted on a lazy susan to make it easy to point at the current player. Each "space" is surrounded by a raised ridge that keeps the tiles from sliding on the board.

What this edition does not have is the special tile racks that were in the original Deluxe Edition. These racks had a peg system on the top for keeping score (a feature I really liked as no one could say that we should not keep score because they couldn't find a pen). This edition comes with more standard tile racks (the wood ones).

Overall, a wonderful way of playing this classic game (although the special board does not fold so the box is bigger than the original). I just wish they had included the special racks when this was reissued.

Customer Review: The nicest Scrabble board game, plain and simple!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you're looking for a quality, attractive, and inexpensive Scrabble board game look at this deluxe edition! It is plain and simple your best bet. Of course you can buy the cheapie Scrabble for $9 or $10, but you're getting a much better board here. The tiles are locked into their spot because there's a plastic grid, no more accidents, the tiles are prettier - a rich cherry wood color, and BEST OF ALL the board spins OVER your tile holders. How many times have you knocked the board into the other person's tiles? It gets old, fast! This is a quality set - I've owned it for over 2 years now and it looks almost brand new. You won't be dissapointed! A wonderful education tool for any age. It's such a nice set and improvement upon the old deluxe set that I'm buying it for a family member's bday. I don't know what other people are talking about "cheap plastic", this is a QUALITY set. Buy it at a store, if you hate it, return it! SIMPLE! Review: Terribly overpriced
Summary: 2 Stars I have been shopping around for the deluxe version of Scrabble for some weeks now (finally purchased but decided to see if I paid too much by checking amazon.com). For some reason, amazon.com is overcharging for this item--about $25 overpriced to be specific. You can find this same version at Barnes & Noble for $35 and at Toy R Us for $33 (as of 12/2007). An additional caveat: all the people who post complaints at the various sites about the shoddiness of this version, when compared to the older deluxe version, are unfortunately quite correct in complaining--very poor materials. It *feels* cheap. The original Scrabble base edition I remember so fondly from my distant childhood was of higher quality than this disappointing modern edition. My advice would be to buy the basic version (from a store that doesn't overcharge so outrageously) and place it on a large lazy susan situated on your game table.

Customer Review: Disappointed
Summary: 1 Stars

I just recently moved away from home to go to college and for Christmas my mom got me the Deluxe Scrabble edition because we both really enjoy playing and her board by Milton Bradley that was only a couple of years old was great and a little better that her 80's version of the board (better color, tiles, and tile holders). When I opened my Parker Brother's version of the board and played on it, I was disappointed. The board is made cheapley and the grid that the tiles fit on is now made of a flimsy plastic instead of the rigid deep grooves that it used to be. We had trouble with the tiles sliding out of the grid when the board was turned on the turntable. While it is slightly better than the gridless original version it is a big disappointment to find that they raised the prices and decreased the value of the deluxe board. Overall it is not worth it -- find a used deluxe board.

Customer Review: Not my parent's Deluxe Scrabble board
Summary: 4 Stars

My parents have had a Deluxe Scrabble board as long as I can remember (I'm 25). This board is a step up for a regular scrabble board and looks stylish, but is not near the quality of their board. The plastic dividers between grids are very short - maybe 1 mm high. The material underneath the grid (with double score, triple word score, etc. printed on it) seems to raise up and not lay flat against the board. I do like how each tile holder gives you the # of tiles for each letter. The board does raise up very high (compared with the old version) when you use the turntable. All in all, I'm definitely happy to have a Scrabble board for my own house and I will enjoy playing it with my husband. However, I do agree with the other reviewers that this is a step down from the old board. A few inexpensive improvements could have made a big difference.
