Customer Review: A cheaper version of the old Deluxe Edition

We have the standard Scrabble set. But when I played with an old (1980s?) Deluxe Edition Scrabble with raised grids and swivel board, I immediately ordered a Deluxe Edition for myself. But I am greatly disappointed by this new Deluxe Edition.This item in general is of cheaper make than the older Deluxe Edition. The grids are shallow, so the tiles are not securely anchored in each slot--a major reason for my purchase. The turntable as well as the tile holders are flimsy, made of cheap plastic. (If you use the pedestal for the turntable, your board will rise about 4 to 5 inches above your table!) For [money amount], one'd think that MB would be able to maintain the quality of this classic game, if not improving upon the older version.
That being said, this version still will perform better than the standard edition. So if you want a brand new Scrabble game, this is definitely the one to get. And, if you play on the floor a lot, maybe you actually will like the high-platform game board. On the other hand, if you want a Deluxe Edition because an older set impressed you at some point, this is NOT the one.

So, you want to buy Scrabble, huh? You were playing at your Grandmas, and you saw she had this cool version with a rotating turntable, wooden tile holders, nice deep pockets where the letters sit on the board. You decided to buy one yourself here at amazon. You ordered it, excited to have a high quality Scrabble in your own possession. You get it in the mail, you open the box, thrilled to own Scrabble, but then.... the unthinkable!! This ain't your Grandma's Scrabble!! What they have done, is turn a nice idea into the cheapest thing they could come up with and still call it "deluxe Scrabble". PLASTIC. Everything is PLASTIC. The tiles might be wood, I dunno I didn't bite them, but everything else is cheap, thin plastic. Doesn't turn nice like the old version. And the biggest kicker of them all, is the board itself. Gone are the nice deep squares the tiles would sit in - where even if you bumped into the game or table, they would stay put. Now it's shallow grooves, and you have to be careful not to turn the board to quicky or they'll move easy.
You're better off buying an old one at a garage sale.

Scrabble is the ultimate board game. In the game (for 1-4 players), you try to get the highest score by forming crosswords of the highest possible values. When it is your turn, you have to put down a word on the board, which connects with a word that is already on the board. You get points by taking advantage of the letter values, as well as premium squares which can double or triple the letter values, or double or triple the word value! This game has given me hours of fun, and I have learned many new words in the meantime. The advantages of the deluxe version over the standard version include the raised grid, in which your tiles easily fit into. In the standard version, my tiles are always slipping all over the place and causing a mess. Also, you can rotate the board on its spindle, so when it is another person's turn, they can have a better view of the board. Also, the bag included, makes the storage of tiles easy, and makes drawing tiles easier too.
Scrabble is a very fun and challenging board game, and with the deluxe version, Scrabble is even more fun than ever!

Once you go Deluxe, you'll never go back. With the standard scrabble game, pieces are always sliding off the squares, and turning the board just creates a mess. The Deluxe game has a plastic grid that conveniently holds letters in place, and the board spins like a Lazy Susan.As a result, you spend more time thinking about the game and less time crawling on the floor looking for missing pieces.
A must for any Scrabble-loving family.
For anyone who has not played Scrabble, it is a great game for boosting your vocabulary. In our family, we have a variation on the rules in order to maximize the chances of learning new words. Players can put any word down and are not penalized if the word is not in the dictionary (under regular rules, you would lose your turn). As a result, we've learned all kinds of funky words that we never would have known otherwise! The format also teaches children strategy, and the format lends itself to great family conversation.
Like all great games, it's also very easy to learn, but very difficult to master. The best board game on the planet.

Scrabble is a great game, and this Deluxe version is a good way to enjoy it, but there are a few things that you may want to know before you purchase it. For one thing, the hourglass timer that is included is not practical for use as a Scrabble timer. The 50th Anniversary Edition of Deluxe Scrabble included a simple digital timer that worked very well. What happened to that? Another thing is that the board itself used to be constructed out of quite durable (and spill indifferent) plastic with a replaceable paper insert, but now it is made of a coated paperboard that probably wouldn't last through an unexpected drizzle, much less a spilled latte. Lastly, the tiles included are the sort that can be "brailled" in the bag due to the indentation of the letters, not the smooth protiles that one would expect to be included in a deluxe edition. In spite of these three shortcomings, I believe the deluxe edition is a good purchase. The durability of the board could be an issue, but the other two are correctable since suitable game clocks and protiles can be purchased later if needed.
