Toys and Games Reviews of Deluxe Turntable ScrabbleCustomer Review: Not the board I grew up with Summary: 3 Stars
Growing up, we played Scrabble around the kitchen table on our deluxe Scrabble board made of heavy duty blue plastic and raised gridlines. Today, when at home we still play Scrabble on that same board.
This Board I am reviewing is not near the same class. While the board has some neat features: Tiered lazy susan (so the Board can be table level or lifted around 3 inches while still rotating), nice wood tiles with cloth carry bag, sand timer, 4 tile holders, and 1 scorepad, it falls flat is in the actual surface. The visible face is inserted in the board frame like a picture and it is not much thicker (translation-Flimsy). There are raised gridlines running around each square (and this is where my bias comes in) to lock the tiles in. The height of these gridlines is minimal at best so the tiles (with a slight jostle) won't stay where you put them. the thin laminated face board seems to be untreated on the back which makes me suspect that with a little water spill warping will occur.
This review was tough for me because the quality of the board from my past is so much better that it feels sturdier 30+ years later than a brand new board today. Overall, This is a good deal for the price ($[...]), but somehow I don't think it should be labeled "Deluxe".
Customer Review: The Joy of Scrabble Summary: 5 Stars
I've been a fan of SCRABBLE since I was a teenager (a LONG time ago), and I never thought anything could be done to improve the game I loved. However, Deluxe Turntable SCRABBLE totally enhances the SCRABBLE experience. I used to prop my old board up on a metal turntable, but it was risky business with a game interrupted more than once when the board shifted as the turntable was moving and everything was all over the table. This new game gives each player the opportunity to easily see the board - right side up, and the slight indentations for letters keep them from scrambling around when the board is rotated. Call me a traditionalist, but I like the fact that this edition keeps the same colors I've been accustomed to for double/triple word and double/triple letter scores. It's also a great idea to have the number of tiles for each letter available right on your individual stand. All in all, my SCRABBLE experience has been enhanced, and my friends who have come to play since my purchase have all oohed and ahhed appropriately. Great job. I highly recommend this version of the game to all SCRABBLE enthusiasts, and for someone purchasing their FIRST game, this is definitely the way to go!
Customer Review: A great version for Scrabble lovers! Summary: 5 Stars
If you love to play Scrabble, you really should get this edition. The tiles fit nicely on the board and don't move around as easily as they do on the regular Scrabble board. The grooves that hold the tiles more in place are not the irritating, snap-in kind. Instead, it just has grooves high enough to hold the tiles better, but not entirely.
Being able to swivel the board to the player making their turn is a great bonus and the tile holders have a display in front of you reminding you of the number of tiles available in the game for each letter, which can come in handy when you're waiting for a Q to make some amazing play and realize the one on the board is the only one there is.
The bottom of the game board holds the tiles in their bag as well as the tile holders, keeping things neat and making it easy to put away or set up for next time.
Very classy. As soon as we saw how nice it was, we got rid of our original Scrabble game board. We also purchased the travel edition because the box for this particular deluxe edition is really large and if you take your games with you on vacation, this one would take up too much space.
Customer Review: Learning more fun than ever Summary: 5 Stars
As a late-30-something adult, I'm new to Scrabble & decided to go all the way & get the deluxe version after reading the reviews. I'm grateful I did. I love the rotating board that makes taking turns so much easier. The tile frames on the board keep the pieces from moving if board gets bumped. There's the option to have the game raised up or low to table, either way the board rotation feature still works. It looks & feels elegant & hardy. It is "addicting" though! The 1st week we had it, my husband wanted to play every hour, literally! I love it too, but not THAT much. I still have a life to live outside of Scrabble. I've always loved words and learning new ones to sprinkle into conversation--I read dictionaries for fun as a child! Somehow I never got into Scrabble until now and I can see why it has lasted so long & become so popular it's almost cult-like. Anyone who loves to learn new words, show off the little-known words they do know, or just likes to have good fun with friends or family, will enjoy this game, perhaps more than any other in their game stack. It's definitely worth the money to get this version over the basic Scrabble board.
Customer Review: Play Scrabble? Buy This. Summary: 5 Stars
Remarkable. Scrabble is cool. Hep. Rad. Outta sight. But Scrabble in this deluxe form is sublime, intoxicating. The pieces stay put, thanks to little walls around each space. You can spin the board so as to not need to examine it upside down. The pieces never slide around. The plastic coating lets you wipe it off, unlike the cardboard version which stains. Nothing is compromised from the original, flat cardboard version, but everything is improved.
OK. Not everything. It still can't help you dump the Q, Z and J at the end of the game without a U. And it is unlikely to assist you in stopping your grandmother's amazing ability to squeeze you out of that triple word score you hoped to grab with a seven-letter word. Take that up with Gram. Just remember who made you the cookies.
Seriously, I recommend this to any family or commited Scrabble player. Families need it for that `full-body contact' style of play that sometimes happens with children or cats involved. Commited Scrabble players need it for pretty much the same reason!
I fully recommend this game.
