Toys and Games Reviews of Deluxe Turntable ScrabbleCustomer Review: Better than Standard Scrabble, Not as Good as Old Deluxe Version Summary: 4 Stars
I definitely recommend this version of Scrabble over the standard version for these reasons:
-There is a cloth bag, which makes a better "grab bag" for choosing tiles, meaning you don't have to spread them down on the table.
-The tile racks have a listing of how many of each letter appears in the game.
-The board has slots that hold the tiles in place (see more on this below), which is a lot better than the flat board where tiles shift around easily.
-The board rotates, allowing all players to have the board facing them during their turns.
-The instruction book includes a listing of a Q-words without using a "u" and also all allowable two-letter words.
There are some downsides to this version, but mainly only in comparison to the old deluxe version.
-This version's letter slots are very shallow; letters still shift slightly. It is a lot better than the standard version but not as good as the old deluxe version that had deep plastic slots.
-The board is somewhat flimsy. The old version was made very well and not cheaply. This version is definitely plastic and probably isn't as durable, although I haven't had any problems with mine yet, except for a slight drift when the rotating wheel is in a certain position.
For the versions of Scrabble that are currently available, I would say this is a good choice, but like other reviewers, I do wish the manufacturers had stuck with better materials and workmanship!
Customer Review: The Greatest Game In the World! Summary: 5 Stars
My wife recently inherited a Scrabble game from the early 1950's. It is in pretty good condition. I was afraid of playing it at first because it's so old, I thought that all the words had been "used up" already.
=)
I forgot how great this game really is...how it makes you think...how it makes you dig deep to see what words you can formulate out of what is on the board. The other day my mother-in-law came up with the word, "QUORN" and got 28 points. Nobody challenged her or anything. Do you know what QUORN means? It doesn't mean anything. She lied. She totally lied and because nobody challenged her, she got to keep the word as she had it.
My brother-in-law is just a genius at this game. He'll have at least 100 points in the 4th round. "Oh, good, John...cat...yes, that's a word..." And then he''ll come up with cataphonic or something crazy like that.
Yep. Nothing like feeling like a dope
But all in all, it's a great game...and it is only a game...so if you're my friend, Jim, and you're reading this review, I forgive you for wanting to set my scrabble game on fire simply because you couldn't find a use for you "Z" tile. Come back over and I'll gladly beat your butt, again...
But anyway, this game is a classic. Whoever created it was either a genius or a madman...possibly both. Well, I gotta go, but take care...
Customer Review: Cheap Version of the Product Made by Selchow and Righter Summary: 3 Stars
When my daughter married, she took our Scrabble game that we had purchased in the late seventies. The game consisted of an EXTREMELY sturdy rotating board, and the squares were held in place by rigid plastic sides that were high enough to keep them from sliding at all. This game has been played many, many times over the past thirty years, and it still looks very close to being brand new. I purchased this version a few days ago, and it is going to be returned as soon as possible. I cannot do justice to the difference in the quality of construction in the game we just bought and the one we bought in the 70's. I was so disappointed in the flimsy, cheap, unstable quality of this game. It is amazing that Hasbro would allow its name to be attached to a product of such inferior quality and esp. at this price. Once again, an American company has sold out its reputation by having its products made in China in order to have cheap labor, construction and materials. Hasbro has joined the ranks of many American companies who are knowingly fleecing the American people by selling inferior products made in China in order to make as much profit on an item as possible. By allowing this cheaply constructed game to be attached to the much loved Scrabble game name shows how little concern Hasbro has about the quality of a product that they are providing the American people.
Customer Review: Rather disappointed well below my expectations Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this game believing it was very similar if not the same as the 80's version; it is not even close... I then returned the game rather than deal with its inferior quality... I later wrote the following to the manufactures.
" I purchased a Deluxe Scrabble game and later returned it when i found the tiles tend to slide along the playing board as the grid is not raised high enough to prevent this from occuring. Additionally the board is much harder to read than the previous deluxe version as the newer editions writing seems dull when compared to the older version. Basicly the operation, look and feel of the new deluxe game seems significantly lower in quality. What year did you start producing these newer (cheaper) versions of the deluxe game? I would like to find an older one perhaps on the used market because this one is just way too cheap. Too bad product development had to change what was once a very good product. Incidently, I noticed this evening that I am not the only person who has complained in writing. The Amazon.com reviews of this game overwhelmingly portray the same story; wish i had read them before i made the purchase. Hopefully someone will recognize this at MB/Hasbro and return the game to its older form or sell the rights to another manufacturer with a greater comitment to product quality..."
Customer Review: Nothing Deluxe about this "Deluxe" Version Summary: 1 Stars
This Scrabble set is definitely not worth the $145 I paid for it. As as matter of fact, it is not worth any amount of money. If you're thinking of buying it: DON'T. I play Scrabble on a regular basis and wanted a durable, "deluxe" set with a turntable to add to my collection of Scrabble sets. When I saw this on Amazon and read the manufacturer's description (which turned out to be very misleading), I though it be would be professional quality. It is not. It is made of cheap, thin, breakable plastic, with flimsy plastic tile racks, and a very cheap looking board. And, to add to the cheap quality, I had to put parts of the set together. For this kind of money, I should not have had to twist in the rubber "legs" or stick the decal letter counters onto the racks, nor should I have had to suffer the embarassment of having the tiles slip off the board every time it was turned on its pedestal -- thus ruining the first and last game played using this set. The only good thing I can say about it is that Amazon was gracious enough to send me a pre-paid return label, accept my return and fully refund my money. It's a shame that Hasbro has stooped so low as to to producing and selling at an exhorbitant price a cheaply-made version of one the most enjoyable, educational, and popular board games ever played.
