Toys and Games Reviews of Deluxe Turntable ScrabbleCustomer Review: How do you spell F-U-N? Summary: 5 Stars
QUXYKOZ!Would that this were a word, and that I had a place for it on the Scrabble board. Of course, I'd want it on the triple word score tile. Alas, I often have letters like this (okay, sometimes I have the J, and sometimes an F or a W for good measure) while my friends always have all the vowels. Vanna, can I buy a vowel? Oops - wrong game. I've loved Scrabble since being introduced to it as a child. I found that it was a fun way of trying to increase both spelling ability and vocabulary, particularly words that include letters like Z, Q (especially Q-words that don't require a U, and yes, there are some!), K, V, and other high-point letters. My friend Monty bought the 50th anniversary collector's edition of Scrabble for me at Christmastime in 1998. --The basics of the game-- Each player draws seven letters from the bag of 100 tiles, with at least one of each letter (more letters for the more frequently-used letters: there are 12 E tiles, a number of other vowels; there are only one each of Z, X, Q, K, andJ tiles) and two blank tiles that may be any letter needed. The object is to combine the letters together to build letters vertically or horizontally on a grid that has bonus squares (double and triple letter, double and triple word scoring). The higher the points of the word, and the more strategic the location placed, the better the score. For instance, placing the word RIG strategically can gain one many points, for it can also combine with the word FOUR to spell out yet two more words (IF and GO) -- I made 21 points on this when the I of RIG and IF fell on a double-word square. The board has 225 squares (15 x 15); it is laid out symmetrically with triple-word scoring tiles on the sides, double-word scoring tiles through the diagonals, and double- and triple-letter tiles scattered about through the rest of the board. Words can be challenged. Scrabble puts out a dictionary -- it is from here that one finds words that have a Q but no U -- or one may opt to use another standard dictionary. The 50th anniversary collector's edition comes with a Scrabble word book. The game also came with a series of offers, including a discount on the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary, the one used for judging at competitions. While rich on some words, abbreviations and proper nouns are not permitted, and it becomes a learning experience to find out just how far abbreviations have infiltrated the language. Of course, id cannot be used as meaning I.D., as in identification, but it can be used in the psychological, Freudian sense. This game can be played with 2 players or more (over four people should band together in teams, or, as my friends often do, band together against me!). I know -- I should find new friends. --Other aspects of Scrabble-- Scrabble lends itself well to helping to teach language vocabulary in other languages, too. The game is available with tiles for different languages. I have played this in Latin as well as English. Scrabble also comes in a travel edition, so that one never need be with the game. There is a National Scrabble Association that publishes a regular newsletter, puts together competitions, and sponsors the National School Scrabble Programme. Membership includes a club directory that lists over 200 local clubs across the United States and Canada. Scrabble is a game that is good for all ages of children and adults from mid-elementary level forward. My eldest niece just turned 10 this year, and this will be her gift next holiday. She has become quite a good speller and an enthusiastic reader, so I think this game should serve her well. This is a good friendly game, a good family game, a good learning game -- a good game all around. Be warned -- the official Scrabble word books do not include profanity, much to the consternation of friends of mine in college who used to play the game late at night as a diversion (or substitution) from studying. And no, writing the words in yourself does not constitute proper Scrabble form! So, here I sit, with the letters E, H, L, N, N, R, and T, with the only open letter on the board apparently being a Q, and Monty has just placed the word BUG in an unhelpful position, and has taken the last two letters out of the bag. Wish me luck! Oh, wait -- I can spell GET off the bug. Triple-word score!
Description of Deluxe Turntable ScrabbleA sleek upscale version of the classic crossword game! You won't have to work upside-down with this rotating board! And ridged letter spaces keep all those high-scoring words in place! It's easy to keep game pieces together ---board features built-in storage, plus drawstring bag for tiles! Handsome burgundy wood tiles rest on large letter racks with letter distribution counter! Includes new "shorter game" rules, plus a timer! For 2 to 4 players. Winner of the CLASSIC Award by Parent's Choice Awards. Ages: 8 & UP. It's still hard to get a triple word score, the tiles are still made of wood, there's only one "X" in the whole box, and family feuds are increasing exponentially. But after 50 years, Scrabble has had a face-lift: a swivel base allows the board to turn so players don't have to work upside down, a plastic grid helps keep tiles in line, and a handy bag stores the letters when they're not in use. The premise hasn't changed at all--two to four players battle it out to make high-scoring words from seven little letters--so choose a dictionary before play begins to avoid ugly confrontations. --Lynne Sampson
