Customer Review: Great Game, But Prefer Older Version

Boggle is a lot of fun for 2 or more players if you like word games. It is fast, so you can play a number of games. I play mostly with 2 players and find it fun, but more players can be even more fun. Basically, it is a word search game where you find as many words as you can (3 letters or more) within the time limit. Unlike normal word search, you words can bend, zig-zag, and anything as long the letter touch and you can't use a letter more than once in each word.
Compared older versions, this one is easier to shuffle and has a built in timer. The original version of Boggle you had to shake and then sift for a while trying to get all the letters to lay flat without looking at them. This one just sets them into place easily with the twisting compartment that comparesses them easily into place after shaking. That part is nice. The built in timer is also nice, except it was confusing at first because we thought red light meant stop. It start out green and blinks faster and faster, then yellow, then red. So we stopped on red, but then red blinked faster until it turned off. Obviously you just learn what it means but was confusing at first.
The older version had an hour glass timer, which was fine. But you could always have used a kitchen timer in its place, which is what we did. So we had a count-down digital timer whenever we played anyway, so I don't mind if it has a timer built in or not.
I prefer the size of the letter dice in the old version. The letter dice in this newer version are noticeably smaller. However it still works fine. It probably needs this size for the twisting compartment to work without a much larger unit, but that is just a guess. That is why I say I prefer the older one over this one. The other is easier to read. But we didn't really notice any problems playing this version recently with 4 people.
The other thing I miss is the optional 5 x 5 grid of the discontinued Boggle Deluxe. With that version you could play the normal 4 x 4 grid or a more advanced 5 x 5 where you had to find 4-letter words or more. I normally played with the 4 x 4 grid, but liked having the option to change it up and try for much larger words. I have my copy of Boggle Deluxe still, so I don't really need another. But we bought this version as a gift for someone since the deluxe version isn't available anymore.
