Toys and Games Reviews of Battleship Design May VaryCustomer Review: You will lose track of time. Summary: 5 Stars
I have played this with paper and pen. I have played this on a UNIX multi-user system. And I have used this product. All work well. However this has a tactile feel and a spatial strategy that is lost in the other forms of the game. My favorite strategy is to use diagonals until making a hit then switching to verticals.
The toy is durable. However it is not advisable to put the parts in your pocket, as they may not be there next time you go to play.
They are arranged on a grid hidden from your opponent's sight. Each ship is of a different size. A good guesser must calculate the size, length and direction of the opponent's ship with the minimum amount of guesses. This is done while your opponent is doing the same.
The basic Primus of the game is to sink your opponent's ships before he/she does the same to you.
Customer Review: You Sunk My Batteleship! Summary: 5 Stars
Battleship is a classic game of search and destroy. Players take turns seeking out the placement of another player's 5 ships hidden from their sight. The first player to sink their opponent's armada gains the victory.
Battleship plays in about 30 minutes. Even though there is a large random aspect to Battleship, the game is tremendously fun to play. The fun for most is trying to "hide" your ships, or place your ships in a unique way as to baffle your opponent.
There are some nights where a good, intense strategy game is more fun to play, and there are some nights where you want a fun, yet less intense battle. Battleship is for these gaming nights. While some consider battleship "too random", I find myself still enjoying the game after 30 years.
Great for all ages. My 6 year old loves to play.
Customer Review: Great for building kid's eye-hand coordination Summary: 5 Stars
My little boy of 6 loves everything to do with planes, ships and cars. He is left-handed and having trouble with handwriting. His teachers suggested activities that would strengthen his "pincer" motion in his hand -- pinching the thumb/forefinger together. This game, with all those little pegs that have to be gotten into the right peg, does the job beautifully. It will help build his ability to write neatly, and he just thinks he is having fun! Also good for learning alphabet/number sequencing.I loved the game as a girl in the 1960's and I enjoy watching my son have so much fun. The only problem, mentioned elsewhere, is that the storage of the peg is not very well designed and they tend to overflow oout of the container when opening the battleship boxes.
Customer Review: Loses it's luster after about 12 or 13 Summary: 3 Stars
I remember playing this as a kid and it was fun then, but I don't think all in all it's got the classic pure gaming kind of thing going for it. Too much of it is blind luck, unless you consider the ability to outguess your opponents ability to place his ships in some confusing fashion a skill. Not at all like Risk or Stratego, this isn't really a battle game at all, it's just a random guessing game. Still, it has some enjoyment factor with the younger set and it's a good child/adult game in that it doesn't take much skill to play and the luck factor can give a kid the victory. There is some logic in how you place your ships and some logic in how to attack, so I do give the game an average rating, it can be fun to play.
Customer Review: Still a Fun Game , Current Version is Cheaply Made Summary: 3 Stars
Based on nostalgia for my own childhood, we got this for our soon-to-be 6 year-old for Christmas. I wasn't sure if my memory wasn't serving me properly or not, but other reviews here seem to confirm what I thought: the current version is very flimsy and cheaply-made compared to the older versions from years ago. The pegs easily fall out of their holes. The letters and numbers are hard to see as they are the same color as the board. That said, my son really enjoyed his first time playing, although he needed help from an adult navigating the grid. I do believe if the letters and numbers had better visibility he would grasp this sooner.
I recommend finding an older version of this game on eBay or somewhere.
