Customer Review: "You Sank My Battleship!!"
Summary: 5 Stars

Battleship was one of my favorite games as a child. Now, my son is able to share in that experience. We just picked up the new Battleship game about a week ago, and he loves it! I also like the changes that have been made to the game. For instance, when I was a child, the game was fairly basic. By that I mean that the containers were plain and there weren't many graphics to give the game a real "military" feel. Now, the game is much more realistic. The bottom part of the playing grid where the ships are placed has waves etched into the surface. In addition, the top part of the playing grid has the look of a submarine periscope. And, the game boxes themselves look like mini laptop computers.

The ships included in the game have remained the same over the years; a battleship, aircraft carrier, submarine, destroyer, and patrol boat. Each player takes turns "shooting" at the other player by calling out grid coordinates, such as B-3 or J-5. This goes on until one player's ships are sunk by the other player.

This game has seen many versions over the years since I was a child, but it still remains one of my favorite games. I really enjoy playing against my son as he's become quite good at it in a very short time. If you're looking for a fun, action-packed game, then "Battleship" is a good choice.

Customer Review: Hit and sunk! Classic Game with modern (cheap) feel
Summary: 2 Stars

We grew up playing this classic game and encouraged this as a gift for our 7 year old. He loves the concept and the play. And we remember fondly the red and blue games of old.

But there are major issues with the build of this game.
Fit: The pins don't all fit into the space allocated for them. You can't properly close the units with all the pins.
Playing board - Bottom: There is no "floor" under the pins. If you try to play the game holding the units, or sitting them on your lap, you will push up any pins sticking through the floor of the unit. Very annoying.
Playing board - Top: The pins do not securely fit into their holes. Any slight jostle will cause the pins to tumble out of their holes destroying any record of where you have fired and what ships you have sunk.

I also miss the 5 little holes in the old clasps of the old units. We always placed red pins in the holes as visual bragging tags to remind our opponents how many ships we had sunk! But that's not a functional issue, per se.

I recommend searching out the real classic units before investing in this "updated" version. We'll be returning this one to the store.

Customer Review: Great way to stay close and communicate with our teenagers
Summary: 5 Stars

Battleship has revived my youthful spirit! We pull out the game and play for several hours - and since all 8 of us want to participate, we have learned to team-up. We have also began to learn new strategies of the game - like let one side go five times, then the other side 5 times. Or, allowing a second turn after a "hit." It is not really a violent game either, you are just sinking a ship that someone is trying to hide from you - no people are on board. It is all about thinking about what the other guy is up to, planning how to avoid his guesses ,pin-pointing his strategy, ship-size plotting/protection, grid-calculations, and FUN! I really believe my children spending time playing this game that teaches so much math, communication, and strategy has helped teach them to work together better (chores)- and built in little more self-esteem [by showing them how much smarter their generation is :)]. Most importantly for summer time, taking "Battleship" on our vacation will definitely keep the travel "tension" levels low.

Customer Review: Not Worth The Effort
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this to play with my five year-old daughter. I tend to prefer games that can include more than two people, but I thought that this would be good for teaching some simple strategies. Unfortunately, the game is just too boring. While my daughter easily understood the game play, she and I both were done after just finding a couple of each others boats. It just takes too long and doesn't compete with the many entertainment options.

As for construction, I will confirm other reviewer comments that the build quality is poor. I remember that in my old game, the pegs would sit firmly in the holes. Now, with a simple move of the board, pegs can fall down, causing you to lose your place. They also don't sit well in the boat pieces. I also received a number of crooked pieces, making them useless.

I can't imagine how anyone wouldn't be disappointed by this game. You may get a few good rounds with it, but don't be surprised if it quickly ends up in the closet collecting dust.

Customer Review: Adults might want to reconsider the new version
Summary: 4 Stars

My wife and I bought the new version of Battleship to recreate our childhood a little, figuring it's a great game that can still be enjoyed now that we're old folks. Yes, no matter what, it's still a great game. However, my main complaint is about the gaudy updated look of the game. It's too busy and really detracts from the simple beauty of this simply great game. After getting this package we were dismayed to see that you can get an almost-new version of classic Battleship on Ebay from 1960-71 for less money. For us, this would be more rewarding and we're seriously considering giving our new Battleship to the Salvation Army and buying ourselves an "original" copy. My biggest problem with the new version is that both "consoles" are the same color. A big part of the fun of this game when I was a kid was fighting over who was going to be red or blue. Of course it didn't matter, but it was essential to the fighting spirit of the game to start by arguing over whatever color the other person wanted!
