Toys and Games Reviews of BattleshipCustomer Review: Things have changed Summary: 2 StarsI was just given this from my mom. She had two versions a early eighties (I grew up with) and this Battleship copyright 2002 so she gave us the 2002 version. She had just gotten us the 2008 version (the one that is connected and completely redesigned) for Christmas which my only complaint with the 2008 Battleship is that it is not two separate cases. So we were happy to take it off her hands. So we played it soon afterwards and we were disappointed.
The 2002 version is nice that it is separate but it pretty much stops there. I have compared it to the 80's version it is very similar. The upper half was nicer graphics and a clear grid. On the left side bottom half is a nice storage area for the ships with peg holes to keep the ships in order. On the right side is a storage area for the red and white pegs. The big differences of this one from the 80s is the bottom grid. On the 80s version there was a water graphic underneath a light blue raised flat grid. The 2002 version doesn't have the bottom raised flat grid it has a molded grid with the pattern of currents and holes drilled in the bottom of the case. It looked okay, I understand it reduces costs but the problem with it is the bottom grid is 3D even around the holes which makes it a little hard to place the ships or the pegs on the grid.
Which brings up the pegs; they are also redesigned. With the version I grew up with they were long and thin where as the 2002 version they are short and fat and hollow but it looks like the same amount of plastic. And my biggest gripe is the pegs, they are hard plastic and fall off the grid when we are playing. The 2008 version has the same shape but has a soft coating on it which fits better on the grid. I read reviews for the newest battleship, a lot of low ratings because of the peg falling out. With the 2008 attached version the pegs have not fallen off for us, but with this version the pegs fall by just bumping it or moving the case. Also the pegs don't fit the same, some insert all the way, others barely fit in the holes. Poor quality control. And with the bottom of the case having holes we have knocked pegs out of the holes when holding it in our laps (we occasionally play sitting in chairs or couches) We don't have that problem with the 2008 version. I wonder if some of the reviews for the newest battleship are actually for this older design.
They have cheapened up this game to reduce costs but I am not happy with it at all. I personally like the newest version, the redesigned ships, the vertical and horizontal lay out and the rescue the captured man aspects of it and the 80s version I grew up with. I think I will ask my mom if we can have their very old Battleship when they are ready to get rid of it, that is a quality game. I am just glad I didn't waste my money of this (2002) version of Battleship.
Description of BattleshipDo you have what it takes to command your own fleet of five ships' Can you survive thrilling, ruthless combat on the high seas' Find out with this classic Battleship game, a test of strategy, determination and luck! Stalk your enemy and plan your attack, even as the enemy is stalking you! Keep track of your hits and misses so you never waste a shot! Try to sink all five of your opponent's ships before your own are found and sunk. The game is portable - the game units fold up to keep everything shipshape and ready to go! Includes two fold-up game units, 168 white peg, 84 red pegs, 10 ships, label sheet and instructions in both English and Spanish. For 2 players. Battleship captains plot their strategies, send out torpedoes, and as the last ship (often the smallest, two-peg patrol boat) hides in an unsuspected corner, anticipation mounts. Like many classic games, Battleship walks a fine line between strategy and luck. The goal is to conceal the location of your ships while finding and destroying your enemies' fighters. The playing arena is a notebook-size plastic board updated for '90s sensibilities: the "floor" of the board is printed with waves and the exterior vaguely resembles a laptop. The design mimics the view a submarine captain would have, complete with a glimmer of radar waves. The game is perfect entertainment to share: simple enough for children, yet gratifying enough for adults to enjoy. One design decision keeps this edition from being truly stellar: the playing boards don't lock securely, allowing the small pegs to fall out and spill from the sides if jostled. --Jennifer Buckendorff
